How is this an alternative to IBJJF?

You are assuming that the site owner's goal is to get a lot more of the BJJ community to use the database. It is not. The site has existed for years, and it is clear that it will only represent a drop in the bucket of the global BJJ community without changes in approach and/or better promotion. I mean, there are only 82 verified profiles in the entire country of Brazil at the moment of this writing. There have been all kinds of suggestions on increasing participation, but ultimately, it's his project and he is not interested.
I wouldn’t say I’m not interested but I might disagree on what the approach should be. From the beginning, we’ve taken an approach of quality over quantity when it comes to the content of this platform. So auto-creating thousands of empty profiles with nothing but a name and a rank is definitely not the way to go, in my opinion.

It depends on Your pov.
Round about 5.000 BB all over the world are an alternative voice that should be heard.
It is not the target to be the only alternative to ibjjf in my eyes.
But at the moment it simply is.💁🏻♂️

Another point that should not be overlooked is that Beltchecker has been growing every single day since launch. We did not have a single day without anyone signing up since 2019. Is it necessary to grow faster? I'm not sure; especially not considering that it could compromise quality or trustworthiness of the data here. Creating and building a profile here requires some effort and time, by design. Humans have an extremely short attention span at this time in our history, so by default, Beltchecker is not for everyone and it was also never intended to be.
I see it as a very rare example of a platform that has managed to succeed through quality over quantity in a sea of instant-gratification apps.
But anyway, there is still ongoing work to evolve this site. You'll see later in the year 🙂

Thank you for the reply!
I think it might be worth it to define some sort of a, well, mission for BeltChecker, other than "an experiment" (sorry if that's been done and I am just playing years old tapes). It could be something like "a high quality database of BJJ practitioners around the world", and could be measured on the success of its mission by, say, how high the quality is, and what percentage of BJJ practitioners (blue belt+ practitioners?) it represents. If those were the measures, then pure growth would not necessarily be a success; one would look at whether the % growth of the site is higher or lower than the % growth of BJJ practitioners around the world.
I would also suggest that there might be ways to dramatically increase the number of *quality* profiles by using more promotion (including promotion by the current users) and figuring out ways to lower barriers to entry without sacrificing quality.
You can probably crowdsource a lot of ideas here and pick the ones that seem more in line with the spirit of the site you'd want to maintain. One idea I'd suggest (and I apologize if maybe it's already been discussed or even implemented) is letting (triple verified) academy owners enter the data for their students, generating invitation emails stating that their instructor signed them up. This could skip the name/email verification without lowering the quality of the data, since it came from a verified third party. Sure, a lot of students would not reply, but a great number would - and white/blue belts would get verified automatically, since their instructor already verified it (right?).

If even the registering process of today is too much of a barrier, imagine how many profiles lacking of evidence we would get here without that barrier! The "Profiles needing more votes to verify" already today has far too many names which have been there for ages and steal attention from more deserving profiles from members who have actually put some effort into their profile. Also, is it really even close to the kind of barrier it is to pay hundreds of dollars to a private company for a diploma?
If anything, I'd prefer to see more barriers before it's possible to vote on the profile. E.g. mandatory lineage plus actual evidence uploaded under the latest belt (and the initial BB, in cases of degrees on BB), if there's no confirmation from the promoting instructor. At least for everyone promoted to BB or lower the last 25 years or so.

IBJJF is an organization similar to the NFL they currently have (for Gi) the most prestigious tournaments for jiujitsu. If you are a hobbyists with no aspirations to compete in the Pans or Worlds, or a NoGi only practitioner, then you don't really need the IBJJF. I feel like beltchecker is mainly an online community of jiujitsu practitioners, but as far as I know they do not have a tournament per-se. That being said, I don't think of it as a substitute, rather something entirely unique. If you do not want to deal with IBJJF, yet still want to compete there are many other tournaments on smoothcomp, AGF, JJWL, and ADCC to choose from. The wonderful thing about jiujitsu is there is always something new to learn and experience. And if you are worried about your belt, don't! Just train and have fun and continue to get better at jiujitsu.

I think you are assuming that the higher the barrier, the better the quality. I'd like to suggest that creative minds might come up with verification methods that may have lower barriers to entry with similar (or, who knows, even better) quality.
I'd like to also suggest that, depending on the goal of the project, the percentage of representation of the BJJ community is not completely and totally unimportant.

Yeah I guess we could come up with some arbitrary measure of the project being "successful". One could be to create a high quality, public database of practitioners with trustworthy content. By this measurement we are by far #1 in the world at the moment. Another could be to be a widely acknowledged alternative to the black belt degree promotions offered by IBJJF and old-generation black belts. As a first in the world, we have managed to do this and 450+ promotions have been approved by the community. So by those measurements, I would say that Beltchecker is quite the success.
I don't think we should run too far with the notion that Beltchecker was "just an experiment". I might have said that at some point. But more than anything, Beltchecker is an idea. An idea of trying to do things different than what always has been done. And the fact that we're still here and still growing, I think is a sign that we were onto something.
Is there still room for improvement? Absolutely! Would it be cool with even more growth? YES! Would I love to work full time on this project? Hell yes, but nobody wants to pay me for that 😂

I would also suggest that there might be ways to dramatically increase the number of *quality* profiles by using more promotion (including promotion by the current users) and figuring out ways to lower barriers to entry without sacrificing quality.
The current barrier of entry:
- A profile picture showing your face
- A selfie of you holding a handwritten note with your name on it
- A picture of something official with your name on it
- Your belt promotion history
This is what is currently required to qualify for a verified profile and be part of Beltchecker. I am not sure how we could lower that barrier?

Please do not interpret this as negativity, but my job is to predict what can go wrong and what might not work, so that's why I do best 😂 And I see several issues with this:
- I don't think conceptually that a platform should allow people to create profiles in other people's names or with their email addresses. First of all, it might be annoying if someone else sign you up for stuff or you might not even want to have your name listed on a public website by your coach. But there might even be legal issues with this in some areas (like the EU, probably).
- There's no way we could verify a name or face just because a verified instructor created the profile on their behalf. They could misspell the name, they could fake it, they could upload the wrong picture, etc. They probably also don't know the students birthdate and maybe not even all the details of their promotion history. Just too many things could go wrong here.
What could be done could be an invitation function that sends the students and email with a link to create a profile. But they would have to do it themselves, for sure.
The thing is, that the price we pay for thoroughly vetted, quality content profiles is that we lose a LOT of people who are simply not interested in participating, putting in the time, have their name on a public site or even just sign up for another social media platform. But that is just how it is. We are not in the business of instant gratification; someone else can do a SWIPE TO VERIFY YOUR BJJ RANK IN 8 SECONDS AND YOU WON'T BELIEVE WHAT HAPPENS NEXT OMG OMG app
But anyway, I'm always VERY happy to hear about suggestions and ideas for improvements. Personally, I think that the current bottleneck is the interface and usability of the site. I have learned A LOT since I started building this 4 years ago; it was basically the first thing I coded in 20 years 😂 So that is an area of improvement which I am currently working on (in the little spare time I have).

Also, I have absolutely zero interest in giving up or pausing my current career to start running competitions instead, that sounds like a nightmare to be honest 😂 (been there, done that)

Yeah, that's what I was thinking. Presumably, the students would be more likely to join/fill out the profile if the invite originated from their instructor.
As far as the instructors go... I think a good number of instructors already on this site will probably do it just because they like the project. However, I think instructors will also find value in this. It's an easy way to track who's been at each belt/stripe level for how long and might be up for a promotion. It might also increase "stickiness" of the students, since new white belts might be less likely to drop out if they have (and invested their time in) a profile showing their progress.

This site and idea is great for bjj as a community for the whole and to get verification with proof and lineage. Most places around the world already has checks and balances, which is great. Me and my teammates are not ibjjf verified and we never gave a shit, focus on training and smashing, old school way. Of course if I have to go through that, my coach would say, "Talk to Carlson", which is a sign that Jr wants money to get anything ibjjf, then I would back away. Unfortunately they banned Globetrotters, which I asked Christian about on FB last year, that was a huge blow to the art (but not ibjjf bottom line), so this community is good to counter ibjjf. Will it replace them? Of course not, but ibjjf isn't the say all that be all for this art.
I teach in china and been here since 2011, I seen many people get promoted by $$ and off 1 dubious tournament win within china, yet then they go abroad they get smashed, but they were "promoted and certified". There are checks and balances on here and can see who are legit or not. There are checks and balances when someone walks into the gym wearing a belt and everyone lining up to test that someone (I'm old now but I enjoyed going to someone's gym and getting tested, while also smashing new higher belts walking into my gym), is the oldest form of checking ones mantle. So this is a great site for people to post their progress and lineage with votes from the community.
I will tell some of my students to do this (if they speak English) and try to build it within china. Glad this is around for the community as a whole. Fuck ibjjf.

That's pretty cool to read what you're doing in China, saddly ibjjf has growing so much that now they control the major scene but for sure strings community like beltchecker can resist and offer an alternative for people who like freedom

Hello everyone.
When I was filling out my profile, I noticed that when adding medals, there is no line for attaching a link to the competition. On the competition platforms, there is always a page with the results (from where I took all the information to fill out). For ease of verification, it is possible to make the link line optional, so that community members can quickly check and confirm the added results.
Examples of platforms include smoothcomp, ajptour, and shakasports.
P. S. Kind people, please give your votes

In Italy we have the UIJJ (https://www.uijj.org/) which organizes quite a few competitions and certifies belts. I registered my belts up to brown with both UIJJ and IBJJF, but now at 53 I no longer compete and I only train for fun. I registered my black belt only with UIJJ, since I believe registering with IBJJF is useful only for those who want to compete in their tournaments or certify students for their events.

IBJJF isn’t a bad organization for legitimacy but if you are not going to compete or if you own a school and don’t care about your students competing in IBJJF I would save the membership fees also.

That one is really easy to talk, they answer fast, if you have proof of your current rank, they give you the certificate. It is really good for black belts who are looking for their raking in black belt l.

Being new here I wasn't sure what to do, however looking through the forums and reading the information / comments provides guided me to ask for votes. I don't know if I know anyone on here personally, at least not that I have seen so far. I am fortunate enough to have trained under own very well known people and posted those pictures to help legitimize my claim. :) This might be an unpopular opinion but at almost 50 I am starting to think AI is the devil ... LOL ... it's ruining so many things ... Like being able to trust what you see. :/
I am enjoying learning how to use BeltChecker and see some new faces ... sometimes we get caught up in our own Jiu Jitsu bubble and don't make those important connections that create a larger stronger community. Also, I am super grateful that the people who voted for me took the time to look though my info and vote.
@Christian I just wanted to say what a great process, and I love that the feedback and improvement / growth is welcome.

I think there are a lot of fair criticisms of IBJJF but I don't think they're the devil or anything like that. I seriously considered not paying into the system because it's a pretty rare thing for me to compete (I have SLAC wrist on right side and my rotator cuffs have absolutely seen better days). I ultimately did it for the benefit of my students: they may wish to compete on that stage, so I went through their process so there wouldn't be anything that I couldn't do for them.

Has anyone ever submitted a completely fictional profile, waited for the community to verify it, and then revealed it as a test? Would an audit like this violate the terms of use?
I suspect our collective “BS nose” is less reliable than we might think. We remember the fakes we catch, but we never discover the convincing fakes we approved. It's the survivorship bias, specifically the inability to factor in undetected false negatives. Has anyone ever audited the system with a fake?
I also wonder whether profiles that sit for months on the “Profiles needing more votes to verify” list with little support should eventually time out. The site could remove them from the queue after some amount of time, provide some feedback for how to beef up their support, and encourage them to try again. That would 1) keep barriers low, 2) give applicants actionable feedback and 3) clear clutter from the pending list.

I agree. About 20-25 years ago a college student signed up for one of the car forums I was on. He was not a car guy at all; had no background in cars. Nothing. Complete noob. In one semester on the forum he had established himself as an expert with opinions that were highly regarded on the forum. At the end of the semester he admitted what he had done and everyone was amazed.

Had a few fake profiles here over the years but they all get figured out pretty quickly (as far as we know 😄).
Regardless, no verification is final. If anyone ever points out that a verified profile is fake, it can quickly be downvoted and disabled by the community. Which has also happened before.

Plot twist: I know everything there is to know about cars but actually couldn't tell a neon belly from a turtles position if my life depended on it and my closest connection to BJJ is that I once got a Brazilian waxing (never again).
If I remember correctly, there was at least a fake profile with photoshopped diplomas, that someone put up to make a point. Point made and I don't up vote on diplomas alone. But now, it's as low effort to produce photo realistic images or even videos, so are photos really good evidence if they were uploaded this year or later? I would really like to see time stamps on when photos were uploaded, but at least I have my old votes of different profiles, showing me I evaluated the photos when it still was a bit of a threshold to produce fake photo documentation of promotions. If someone claims a belt from someone dead or without much of an internet presens, how would we be able to falsify the claims? Yet, there's usually the same old suspects who up vote everything that moves, unless anything talks against it, so as a community, I think Beltchecker will be duped more easily with time.
Now, I think mentions of the promotion on social media or a homepage by the promoting instructor (from a well established official account) is among the strongest evidence, although most just post a screenshot when the most important part is providing a direct link (and not just to the general page if the academy etc.).

It's been done.
I myself voted to verify based on a forgerized IBJJF cert and card submitted as proof, in the early days of the site.
I rescinded my vote when it became apparent that the documents were forged.
Just like fake ID's and people getting into bars, or using forged documents to cross borders, or pass inspections check points, frauds, forgers, and those willing to deceive will get away with it until they get caught.
Unless the admins of the site requested and authorized it AND unless such tests were explicitly defined as expected by the community using the site to be authorized in the terms of service, then yes, all such actions would be morally inappropriate, ethically inappropriate, and in some domiciles crimes.
The funny thing about cyber crimes, in many domiciles cyber crimes carry steeper penalties than physical crimes of the same damages or harms levels.

I agree with all the good thoughts and views here. I think we should also remember that no vote is final. If anyone gets exposed as a fraud, having cheated with photos or whatever, the community can instantly withdraw and/or downvote. The verification is always “live” so to say, which is a strength of the system that we haven’t seen/needed in action yet. It’ll literally only take one forum post or downvote of a fraudulently verified profile to bring it down.
Although I kind of agree, I can't help but reminded of reddit witch-hunts and other similar mass down votes that have gone horribly wrong.

Well we have the data: 2,384 days since launch of this site and a mass-downvoting witch hunt never happened.
I don't think we should underestimate the power of non-anonymous profiles here vs. anonymous profiles on reddit.
