The jiu-jitsu market has seen significant growth worldwide, driven by the promise of positive impacts on physical and mental health, as well as fostering a sense of belonging and community among practitioners. However, in many places, there’s a troubling trend towards toxic behaviors, with “trash talking” becoming common, extending beyond competitions to permeate all aspects of jiu-jitsu. It’s important to recognize that there’s a diversity of goals among practitioners, ranging from seeking health and confidence to self-defense and competition. Each person is unique, with their own motivations and paths. Instead of worrying about what others are doing, we should focus on continually seeking our own 1% improvement each day while positively influencing those around us, even if it’s just within our own circle. Jiu-jitsu has the potential to be a powerful tool for uniting people and creating a better environment for all.
