Quick update: it’s been a solid week and I already feel pretty good. I wish o had done it sooner. I am driving, showered making food etc all by myself. Shoulder moves great but it’s the bicep tendon that’s going to hold us up so I am doing exactly what the doc says. I got on the assault bike today, did some lunges and some bicep curls with a coffee mug. I will be going back for my first appt on Monday. I’ll be teaching via proxy starting between week for sure. I’m taking it easy but I suspect brcas e of my age my muscle density I’ll recover quicker. Ps I have 0 pain in my shoulder. Off pain meds on Motrin and Tylenol. I think ya mentally harder on me than physical. We all love JJ and nothing will keep us down.

Great to hear that you are doing great.

Had a CAT scan yesterday to see if so need a bespoke part or if an off the shelf one will do the job. If it is a standard part I will be getting the operation in December.

Just a shot at my incision. First time I saw it was this morning 7 days post op. Getting better everyday. If you need it do it, I promise it will be ok. Monday I’ll post the xray photo of my shoulder.

Yes, that's super crazy. I didn't have the same ROM until maybe about 3 months post-op. I honestly just surpassed my pre-op active ROM like 2-3 months ago. Nothing to write home about; my shoulder was trash, but now I've definitely surpassed pre-op everything. Good for you though. I'm curious to see your x-rays.

In following some of these threads about our cyborg transformations it amazes me how different the experiences are from one person to the next.

Real quick, what’s yall take on working one side. As in weight etc? With very careful ease of course.

My PT team rocks. They had me doing blood flow restriction training pre- and post-op. With 2 joint replacements in a row, it was important to hit the ground running.

Obviously, post-op, I was only doing one side. Apparently there's a good body of research to support working one side, with some transference of strength to the other side.

The result? I'm probably not as fat and out of shape now. I feel like if this was the only benefit, it's worth it. I can't say it was a miracle, but probably worth checking out!

Josh Waitzkin talks about doing this in his book the art of learning. He broke his arm and concentrated on strengthening his good arm and visualisation of using his broken arm. It allowed him to lose little muscle in his broken arm while it healed and he came back to win a tai chi world championship.

I had a shoulder repair, not replacement, and I started the same way at PT. Just gentle passive stretching on the repaired shoulder with exercises on the opposite side until I could do them with the affected arm. I still lost plenty of mass in the left arm after six weeks in a sling. I had a DXA scan a couple days after getting out of the sling and I'm glad I suffered through the experience of keeping my arms close in to my body so I could fit on the panel and see the side-side differences. 12% muscle mass loss, 10% fat mass loss, and 11% bone density reduction from left to right arms! I expected to see some muscular atrophy but was surprised to see how closely fat mass and bone density followed the lean tissue into the toilet.

Brother you have had bi lateral replacements?
No. Left shoulder, right hip... I've been updating my progress with my hip on a different thread :).

Spoke to surgeon and it looks like an off the shelf shoulder is going to work. He is still less than happy about my intended return to BJJ but ultimately it is my choice. Just need to work out the logistics about when to have it and how to pay for it.

I’ve come to realize that doctors don’t always know what’s best for us. Sometimes they try to stick us with meds and bs. Get the shoulder do it properly and you will be back. I am healing great and feeling good just 14 days after. Working out again etc. I’m excited to get back to drilling but I will wait at least 6 weeks for sure and see how I feel. Hope it all works out for you, bro.

You have to be adamant about the fact that BJJ is just something you're going to do. Your doctor's job is to take that into account and give his expert opinion on how to do it and get the best results on your replacement. If you were a smoker or heavy drinker, your doctor would be right to tell you to quit, but they should also understand that for smokers and drinkers, it's sometimes really hard to quit, so they should be able to give you a "harm reduction" approach to your treatment. I don't know why any doctor in the world would tell you to quit BJJ, as it's not even remotely in the same category as smoking/drinking.

I'm surprised your expenses would be that prohibitive for you, since you're in the UK.

I am looking at going private to beat the waiting list. I have some reasons why waiting is not really appropriate.

Friends sorry took so long I’ve had alot going on. Had my 6 week appt yesterday. Here’s a pic. I’m doing PT twice a week and I am still partially teaching via proxy but I can teach minimally not using shoulder. Doc said it’s a little tight. That’s on me I’m sure I content to over use it at home sometimes. I am doing cardio and sauna everyday and strength training one side. But I do need to cool it alittle so I can totally recover. So far so good.

Thanks for the reply.

I guess balancing the tight rope between doing enough to get better and too much slowing down your recovery must be difficult. We naturally are people who are used to pushing the envelope and taking the foot off the throttle can feel very unnatural.

Almost 8 weeks post shoulder replacement. I have been teaching hands on for a couple weeks now and pt is going well. We are in the aggressive stage so we are getting thru it. Also rolled some open guard retention, off balancing etc with one arm in my belt. Also worked some De le riva passing one arm of course went well! Team I’m in the sauna everyday 20-30 min and been on the assault bike. Just starting both arms at 7 weeks. My shoulder blade and traps a really tight so that’s been an issue. Team it’s not as bad as they say. I feeling like my JJ will be better than ever. I’ll keep ya updated.

That is great news. I am getting mine done on the 15th December and it is great to hear from someone who has had the surgery and is crushing the rehab and return to the mats.
