I’m sure I’m not the only one who has heard this but it said that you’re more likely to walk past a serial killer than you are a man with a brown belt in Brazilian jujitsu. I always thought that was funny, beings as I can name more black belts then I can then brown belts? But they all used to be brown belt at one time? However it is amazing when you look at the statistics on this site alone, Brown belts are the least of the colors(besides kids belts ) which I find pretty interesting because it almost verifies that saying ! Am I the only person he’s heard this before what do you guys think are brown belts that rare?

I've heard something like that as well when I first started. I imagine that is a lot different now that bjj has become more popular and much more accessible and available.

Your theory would imply that some time around 8 years and 11 months ago, there was a sudden global drop in people signing up for Jiu Jitsu :D

Probably because people are black belts for way longer than they are brown belts. At least on average all those who have been black belts longer than 2 years, 9 months and 1 day.

That makes more sense. I forgot how young BJJ is compared to other martial arts. Also it does make more sense that people apparently spend less time at brown then they do at other belts.

By the time I get my black belt I’ll be just short of three years of having it , and just short of 12 years getting it 11 years 10 months

Those time frames don't take into account the number of people who essentially spend the rest of their life as a blue or purple belt because they quit. I don't know the statistics, but I would imagine the dropout rate of brown belts is significantly lower than the other belts. When you are that close to getting your black belt, it is hard to imagine how someone would choose that time to quit.

Definitely this. Probably way more white to purple belts who drop out.

It would be interesting to know the statistics around this. We all know that blue belt has a huge drop out rate, but not sure about purple and brown.
