I know some gym Tell you in advance when you are getting promoted to you next belt ( seeing that family is usually there )
but i know that others dont tell the person ( as for my gym ) but they spread the message word of mouth to a many people possible before hand so its a surprise.

I know is different for each belt but i was surprised for all of mines..

My Blue and Black belts were both surprises. My family was notified ahead of time about my BB promotion, which let me know what was up when I saw them come through the door.
I like the "surprise" aspect of promotions, and think it keeps students focused on training for themselves and not just checking off an attendance card in hope of "leveling up."

I like the idea of a promotion being earned - and when it's earned it's awarded. Because it's not up to you to decide is it earned - it is a surprise.

Many gym's do promotions on a certain day (once, maybe twice a year) - mine include - and for me - it takes the magic out of it. My purple belt was a surprise and I really remember it well - it's a nice memory.

There's plenty of time afterwards to enjoy it with your friends and family - in a way, the joy lasts longer because you get to share it with people on different occasions (when you get home, when you get back from the competition, etc, etc).

The more surprisey the better!

But only for the person getting promoted, I'd like to get (secretly) informed when a teammate is going to get promoted. (Also because we do run the controversial gauntlet and I like to whack them up.) No need to involve family in any of the promotions, they don't do that in your workplace either.

I get the "let's have your closest family and friends there to celebrate" thing, but I prefer the surprised. I wasn't told when it would happen, I worked my ass off for a possibility that myself (and two teammates) were going to have to go take a belt test, but when it happened, I was genuinely shocked and even teared up.

I hear you homie.. I got played by my boy from Cali and my 15 year old daughter. they had is planned for 2 weeks and i was clueless.. I didnt notice until my coach called me up for another stripe on my belt and then like 60 people came piling through the door.. I cried....

Even when I've been "surprised" for a belt level I kind of knew it was coming. I think based on the feedback you get from your coach and how you're doing in rolls/competitions you should know where you're at and roughly how close you are to the next rank.

I like stripes being spontaneous though because you never know who's going to get one when they pull out the tape so it's always a nice feeling of unexpected validation.

i dont mind, belt is a piece of fabric at this point, and i mean that. Honestly, the reason i joined beltchecker is cuz people get on me to "legitimize" and its like look if im not legit enough on the mat then psshh lol so this is a good way for me to put it out there plus talk with other grapplers and hang out. get it somewhat legit without going through the ibjjf whom i have no plans of competing for honestly lol

so in other words.. i guess just give me rank whenever feels right? so i guess i take that to mean as a surprise? cuz that meant it felt right lol

Suprise but I think for my black belt I'd like to have my family drive down to be there. My dad is the one who got me into martial arts and he used to train all the time so I'd like him to be there in that special moment.

I'm torn about this. I loved the surprise of getting my blue belt, but I also wish my wife was there to see it. So for that reason I wish I knew ahead of time so she could come.

Of the same color. (That's the surprise and the knowing before hand all in one)

Trust me.when I tell you I understand. My father pushed me to do what I wanted and knew I was good at it. He wasnt able to make my promotion because of his cancer but made sure he was FaceTimed in to watch it. Such a proud moment for the both of us.

I had to call my dad immediately. Both of our Jaws dropped watching Royce Gracie on a crappy VHS tape in 1993. He supported me 100% by paying for lessons when I was broke, paid for seminars, came to tournaments, walked out with me for fights, supported my first school, all that awesome dad stuff. I called him and said "we did it". Cheesy as hell.

I think that knowing is better. I want my family there to see it.
Blue, Brown, Black, I all knew.
Purple was a surprise. but I didn't have a significant other at the time, and most of my family was there training with me anyways.

Random surprise that is just for you. Having annual or bi annual promotions always seems weird to me and could encourage jealousy. Also can't stand seminar promotions that just seems like a money grab. I like the idea of just giving someone a promotion the moment an instructor feels the person is ready and let them have their brief moment of shock and surprise unique for them.

All of my promotions have been a surprise. With that said, for my brown belt I knew that one was coming and actually avoided it for six weeks by not showing up to the specific class that we typically did our promotions in. My coach then surprised me a week before a competition and promoted me and then move me to the next belt division.lol.

I always like to give surprises to my boys in promotion. Thats the moment you can see their red and watery eyes(because they don’t know they are going to get promoted☺️) , especially when you tie the new belt on them. But i will inform other teammates so they will come to witness it.

I initially tried to surprise people, but I eventually gave in to my German directness when I realised I just can't do subtlety. ;)

So my students generally know in advance that I'm going to promote them. Or my instructor is going to promote them, if it's above blue belt: I'll specifically time gradings with him on dates when people I want my instructor to look at can make it. So, they have plenty of notice that they might be getting a purple/brown belt.

In terms of my own promotions, I don't have a preference. It's normally been a surprise when I've been graded so far.

Yoooo I tried that with every belt also. but then we all knew it was coming just not what day.. so we just kept doing competitions and he always said he wouldnt promote when we were competing in a circuit. so he would catch us during a break in the competitions.. if we showed up lol

Ha - yeah, I had that with purple, which is the main exception as that wasn't a surprise. One of my training partners let slip that my instructor had said he was planning to promote me at a seminar. I thought long and hard about not going, but eventually decided I'd better. ;)

Every time I've been promoted, it's been a case of "ah shit, now people are going to expect more of me. I was just getting used to the old belt!" :P

Stopped caring about promotions pretty early on, but I still kinda predicted when I would be whipped up to brown belt. Now it's completely different and I kinda like it.

I actually think it's the natural thing to do around 3-5 years in UNLESS the school is geared in a way that people are constantly reminded how important the promotions are.

I like surprises. No need to invite my family, I showed my wife the video of my gaunlet for my bluebelt and got asked if I'm sure I didn't get involved in an S&M Cult. :D

I think it should be a surprise for all but the black belt. That way people can invite whoever and prepare a few words for when they accept it. I also think the gauntlet is gross and would think twice about training anywhere that did it.
