Anyone else in software development? I work with some great developers who would love to enhance this site in their free time. Is it open source? How can we help?

Thanks a lot, really appreciate it. Perhaps at some point, I'll take some more people in to help out, but for now I'm kind of ok.

I started this project because I missed coding. Haven't coded anything in 15+ years, but it's been really exciting to do it again :) Back then we didn't use any frameworks, I just recently discovered those but a bit too late - this whole site is written from scratch :D

Understood. I highly recommend GitHub if eventually you may need some help. My background is in Scrum and currently I am in QA (Mostly Automation) and I love BJJ, so these two things go together like Lamb and Tunafish.

Pros of GitHub:
- Easy for people to contribute and you can still have the final say about approving code going through
- Great for bug tracking and feature enhancements
- You can make the repository public or private. If it's pubic, developers could show off their work
- Pipeline integration so you can kick off builds automatically

Cons:
- If you've never used git before, it will take getting used to

Thanks for all your hard work and we all appreciate your heavy lifting, but don't think you have to travel this world alone we are a community and we are here for you whenever you need us.

Yeah this has been the issue so far. Having time to learn something new is very hard when I've just been trying to stay alive because the site has blown up much faster than I could ever imagine :) Like I want learn how to to build a simple API for competition organizers but know nothing about it at the moment.

There's the risk that if the site grows it needs to be written from scratch because you might've missed some aspects that don't scale.

Had to start somewhere though, didn't want to take a year off first to study :)

For now, it's running pretty well, I think. Especially with the CDN installed. I'll have some pro eyes on it at some point soon, as well, to go through everything.

I'm also a developer that would be interested in contributing in my free time if this was on github or gitlab. As for making an API, REST would be pretty simple to do some basic stuff. Like have beltchecker.com/api/v1/user/:id return JSON representing a user profile.

Yep, but mostly C++/python in the offline world. I did create a BJJ scoreboard/timer for free (openroll.sourceforge.io) but not currently planning any more releases of it. I'm kind of new to the web game but I'm catching up quickly with an online code camp. http://github.com/crajun if you want to connect.

Hey I'm a web dev too, to but I mainly geek out on scratch programming with JavaScript. None of my stuff is quality enough for here but it's fun lol

My current project is actually a web top but it's not like.. released or anything lol

This doesn't use any frameworks? Oof.. lol

Oh yay, another Python fan! I'm a python person myself:

I've got a couple little projects, wrote something that allows you to split up UFC Events by entering times, wrote a small CRON job that scrapped the IBJJF website for when competitors signed up to my division and sent me a notification. I've seen people use OpenRoll before. Awesome to connect with the person who created it!

Haha yes oof :D

Basically, I worked as software developer in classic ASP back around 2000 for some years. Quit for Jiu Jitsu and never coded anything since. Decided to take it up again as a hobby project, so I read up on PHP and wrote this site from scratch, using nothing but W3.css really. Been fun and have learned a lot! :)

I'm mostly a front-end dev with experience in React (I work with Drew), but if you ever decided to get some help with this thing, I would be 100% in to help. Pros of a component framework like react: -Once you have a component library of buttons, modals, icons, etc. adding new features is like legos, just combining components together. -Making this site a single page app (SPA) would make it lightning fast. Slightly increased initial load time because of the larger JS bundle, but subsequent page loads are as fast as your API can respond. -Infinitely scalable, with state management solutions like Redux or Apollo if you have a GraphQL API.. I could sell you on that too! :) -Developer quality of life is fantastic. FB is extremely careful with updates, so things like Hooks can be used with legacy things like class components. Testing is super easy, I learned most of what I know about unit testing react in a weekend. -Using React, you could also expand to a mobile app (although, the mobile experience on your site currently is really good, everyone loves apps) and share most of the same codebase using React Native. Who doesn't love making mobile apps in HTML/JS/CSS??? You could have your back-end expose some CRUD endpoints and really have a separation of concerns from your API and your front-end too. Could host everything on AWS so it would scale as needed. Also remember, open source doesn't mean you are just releasing your idea to the public freely. There is licensing that comes along with it. You could also just do a private github repo (those are free now) and invite devs you want. Consider it! I would be ecstatic to pitch in, and I'd teach you React too if you wanted! I am mostly self taught. If you have any interest in a screen share demo of some React development, feel free to PM me and I'd be happy to walk you through some code. Edit: spelling and formatting and stuffs
That all sounds very exciting and I would love to learn more. However, this site was a little side-project that I squeezed in because I had an inflammation in my wrist and it free'd a little time in my life. I currently have two kids (3 & 6), run 12 camps a year (1800+ participants), manage the world's largest Jiu Jitsu affiliation, run a factory, produce and sell gis/rashguards/etc, own a beachwear brand, write a book, try to learn French, surf a little and teach Jiu Jitsu.

I can barely find time to go to the bathroom or buy groceries sometimes, so to take time off and learn all the new programming stuff is a bit out of reach at the moment :D

Full stack desktop application dev here (C#, SQL Server primarily).

Still learning the in's/out's of the REST api paradigm but would be willing to lend a hand where I can.

Can code in c/c++, C#, Java, Ruby (with or without rails) and Python. Can handle SQL databases and graph databases. Also have an interest in IT-security. If you might need any help down the road; I'm happy to lend a hand

Anyone with the skills to help me build a simple API? I imagine competition software etc could make a call with the ID number of a member and just get the basic profile data JSON back? Most importantly, of course, the verification status.

Site is running PHP on MySQL with no framework used.

Looks like it's showing the firstname in the lastname slot. Depending on expected use you might want to include profile image url.

Outside users probably would use the “beltname” field so they don’t need to worry about the belt rank enumeration.

Btw if you feel like the site is running a bit faster today, then you're right. My friend Eric (https://beltchecker.com/p[...].php?id=35) just did some magic on the database and the improvements are just ridiculous. That's what I get for not coding anything in 15 years haha
A well-placed index or two can certainly make a night/day difference in performance. :)

Glad you guys found a performance bottleneck.
