What say you about this situation? In my area, there's a guy who is certified in the Hayastan grappling system marketing himself as a BJJ instructor and his school as a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu academy. He has also managed to convince someone affiliated with USA Judo to give him a black belt in judo despite having absolutely no competency in the art. The weirdest part of it all is that his academy is thriving and he is tolerated by respectable people in the judo community. The whole thing is baffling to me. Aren't frauds supposed to be rooted out?

I believe Hayastan is the Gokor / LeBell system, so anyone certified to teach would be very proficient in Judo techniques. They are pretty legendary in the Judo world. It doesn't get much better than Judo Gene. If there is a USA Judo black belt of sufficient rank to grant him a black belt, it is what it is. I don't think he should advertise himself as teaching Brazilian Jiu Jitsu if he's not ranked in the art, but I don't know the guy or the situation. Just my 2 cents.

Yeah, I have no issues with the legitimacy of Gokor and Judo Gene, but this guy is clearly trying to deceive people about his credentials. The judo thing is also a joke because this guy just doesn't train or know judo. When I was a judo green belt this guy wasn't even on the mats, then all of sudden he mysteriously and inexplicably became a brown belt and then a black belt shortly after. The whole thing is gross.

In Holland we had a similar thing happen with a BJJ black belt. All of a sudden the guy went from white to black. But the community knows the truth and sees the quality of his students. Now if only there was a way for the community to give credit where credit is due....

I'm wondering how this site here would react to something like this. I mean if he'd present a picture where a seemingly or actually legit black belt is presenting him a belt he'd get a ton of votes...

The BJJ people on this site from Southwest Florida would torch this guy. No joke, it would get ugly.

Jesse Grinstead,

if I google mapped the right school,

(Which is the only school that claims Hayastan connections near by you)

The BJJ school where you train at and this other school are practically on the same main road, 16 miles apart, correct?

So, you have raised some serious accusations about a nearby competing school.

These accusations may have merit,

or may be false accusations against a nearby competing school to your own home school.

Gokor does not just hand out belts in his system.

So, regarding Gokor, I would suggest that you could call Gokor and simply ask him if the instructor in question is a black belt under Gokor or not in Gokor's system, Judo, Jiu-Jitsu, etc.

Regarding the USA Judo promotion, have you called USA Judo to ask who promoted him in Judo, and then contacted that promoting instructor for details?

Have you asked the competing school instructor in question who promoted him to black belt in Judo, and BJJ?

The school in question seems to active in competitions, if their website and facebook page are to be believed.

How do the students do in competition?

Have you ever rolled with or done randori with the instructor?

Or their students?

You have raised serious allegations about a nearby competing school on this website,

and I would suggest that comes with some obligation to back those allegations up with research and proofs.

I would note that I was not aware of this school nor this instructor until you made this post.

But being that the allegations were serious from our domain's perspective, and both your schools are in my backyard,

I made an effort to research who you meant, and check out their facebook profile and website.

I found a photo of said instructor receiving his black belt certificate in Judo. Nothing regarding his bjj rank. No about info regarding bjj either. Pretty sure most academies list that information.

True.

It is odd he does not.

But a lot of academies use odd marketing templates for their websites.

More information needed to assess the allegations either way.

I train with a number of Hayastan guys and most of them are also black belts in BJJ under Antunes if I am not mistaken..

This includes Gokor who won his divisions at both the Pans and Masters Worlds last year..

The guy you are talking about I don’t know but wanted to clarify a lot of Gokor’s Black Belts are also BJJ black belts and do well in competition at that level

Also, Gokor is not just a certified black belt competitor with the IBJJF,

He also is a certified black belt coach with the IBJJF,

which means he passed their rules course,

and all other black belt coach certification requirements of the IBJJF.

And Gokor is listed as the head coach of his own IBJJF academy.

Gokor has been training BJJ black belts for almost 30 years,

and has certainly been training with BJJ black belts for 30 years.

If anybody thinks that Gokor is not a BJJ Black Belt, they have a severely flawed and limited understanding

of BJJ, how people progress and learn BJJ,

and what being a black belt in BJJ means.
