I feel like the whole verification model is a bit broken in terms of how online communities actually grow. I just joined, but no one from my gym is verified. I can't even vote for them because I'm not verified.

It seems like there is nothing for me to do until some magical date in the future where other people I know have joined. I feel like that interaction kills the growth pattern for keeping active users, because people from my gym are in the same boat. All sitting around waiting for people we don't know to "verify" us.

Seen other's advice.... I'm not going to share a bunch of photos, I don't do it on FB, don't have an IG, not going to do it here.

Feels like it's going to kill activity down to a ghost town as bunch of people join and find there is nothing they can do.

Look back in the forum, since day one people have been posting this exact same thing. However, very recently (until a huge surge of new users last week), we were up at 98% of completed profiles being verified. Now we’re at more modest, but still very impressive, 88%.

Have patience, provide a well documented profile and the ball will also start rolling in your area.

The stats speak for themselves:

I don't have any members of my school on here either, so I reached out to a few people that were familiar with my coach, or people I have met before. There are also a few members that will look at profiles of unverified members and see if their resume holds up. Im a few verifications short, but I've only been here 2 days. Give it some time, if your credentials are accurate, members will see it and help you out. This seems to be an extremely positive community. That's my new guy perspective.

A lot of people have expressed this concern, but it has worked pretty great so far... just before the recent surge of registrations (after the IBJJF ban), we had 98% of the completed profiles rank verified here.

There is in fact something you could do, but you just wrote you refuse to do it. Which is to provide material on your profile that would make people that don’t know you personally comfortable voting for you, such as photo documention, comp record & social media links.

If you don’t want to, then I guess no other choice than wait for enough of your friends to join & get verified.

Based on how the community (of verified profiles) has been growing organically so far, it doesn’t seem that the model is broken as is. But you’re breaking it for yourself a bit. :) Hopefully your gym buddies are more willing to share information, as that will help you too at some point.

This has been discussed lots on the forum, but here's my ten pence worth . . .

I spend some time each day to look at unverified profiles. I will look for genuine promotion pictures, certificates, maybe registration with other federations. I will also look at social media or perhaps do a google search of the person. If you're genuine then you can be checked out pretty quickly and you will get my vote, the jiujitsu community is still pretty small.

Unfortunately if you're not willing to share pictures and be forthcoming with information about your jiujitsu journey then of course you will find it much more difficult to become verified. In this case you would have to wait for people who know you to give you the thumbs up. I think the site works on the principle that people buy into the spirit of the idea.

In the meantime you can still participate in discussions in these forums you don't have to be verified to share your opinions. As Justin says above this is a pretty positive community so it won't be long before you become verified I'm sure.

Good luck!

Without photo evidence and no known verified members you are going to have some difficulty getting verified. It is ultimately your choice how you go forward.
How about being the first from your school to get verified and clearing the path for your fellow team mates? That way you can help them as well.

Erik,

Message Don Geddis using the send message function.

Don is a Ralph Gracie black belt and he can verify your status at Ralph's and verify you.

Don's vote alone is worth 175 out of the 200 points that you need.

And Don's vouch will likely make someone else vote for you because he is a well known and well respected 3rd Degree Black Belt who also trains under Ralph Gracie.

Problem solved.

There are some great points here. An important word that sticks out is community/team. Although, I just registered the other day and am not "verified", I see this as another community I am able to be apart of and share. Through those connections, albeit from "my affiliation" or not, the validity of an individual will quickly be found and hopefully not abused. So while, it may take to be be verified, hopefully as everyone shares/communicates/reaches outside their affiliate bubble, there will be continued growth.

So is there a "better" way to go about this process? Maybe. But, as we all develop, so does this hopeful resource.

P.S. Fore sure verify me so I can pave the way for other legitimate practitioners within our affiliation (10th Planet).lol
