As a man of a larger stature (6'0 and 255 lbs) I find a lot of negativity at times directed at the bigger folks. I find it amusing because I am able to roll with speed and flow with the best without having to smash all of the time, but smashing is a lot of fun.

I'm pretty active and am actually losing weight, but being a heavyweight does have its advantages now and again.

So if you're a heavyweight, sound off.

Thanks,

Josh Cupp

Now I'm at 5'8 205 but in my competition days I weighted 227.
I usually work off my back and when on top, try to put as little weight as possible on my rolling partner.
Our abilities are easy to waive off as being strong or heavy

I like to use a variety of styles. Light on top is good because you can flow faster IMO. I also like to be heavy at times when the partners aren't being very cooperative l.

6'4" and 315lbs here. Heavyweight is all I have known my who life playing football and some high school wrestling. I am overweight, but I am also just a giant human who still carries alot of muscle for the little weight lifting i have done lately. I should really be about 260- 270lbs. I started bjj 1.5yrs ago at 330lbs.

I only no-gi currently but I love this martial art.

Shockingly I am a top game smasher on the mat. I am working hard on my defense and bottom game though.

I do my best not to smash people while rolling, especially if they are way smaller than me. I try not to use it as a crutch, i try to use it as a tool that I can employ when I need to.

I'm pretty sure I fall into the heavyweight category. I'm 6'6" and about 260 lbs. I'm up from about 235 lbs due to fighting with a torn shoulder over the past 5 months. I've been as low as 217 lbs but prefer to be around 230-235 lbs.

I hear you on that one. I'm 6'1 330 lbs and I'm a guard player. My instructor made me start sitting down or in guard for a long time. I used to weigh 480lbs. Been training for almost 20 years. This picture is from a few years ago training with my Instructor Master Fabio Santos

I think every weight has its advantages and disadvantages, the street does not ask about the weight, I have 6'1 with 242lb, in spating I often give the opponent the position he wants, often the black belt goes from the mount position, t side ...

At 5’11 I’ve never considered myself a true heavyweight but at 240 I’ve always been lumped in with the big boys and forced to compete with the real giants. The only way I’ve survived is by building the speed and cardio to land the takedown and dominate top control. No one ever believes I’m 240 until I crush their guard for 5 minutes straight and everyone underestimates the cardio of the dad bod! I love it when I outwork younger, “athletic” partners on the Matts and leave them going “Jesus , how heavy are you?” It’s almost like that cliche insult of saying “wow, you’re so strong! “ but I think it’s actually a compliment because it means you’ve baffled your partner with your superior technique.
I train 3 times a week and run 10 k four times a week to maintain the cardio to throw around 240, I should be thinner but I love to eat! I always tell people not to wait until they’re in great shape to train bjj, just jump in and learn, don’t let the weight hold you back, you can be a fat dad like me and still have speed, agility and great cardio!

5'9" at 230lbs, I usually compete at 220ish. I like being heavy and still being able to have agility and speed. I've been credited with "moving really well for a bigger guy" and that makes me happy. I'm also not afraid to do some of the inverted and flashy stuff that catches people off guard. It's a good thing to be able to do what your opponents dont expect you to do and have the strength and weight to back it up.

Heavyweight competitor from Ohio here! I’m 6’2 240lbs and I’m really lucky to have a lot of big high level guys in my area. Just competed for the first time at heavyweight black belt and let me tell you those guys are big and can move so it’s been a fun challenge. That’s what jiu jitsu is all about. I was working on finding an mma match but with the virus who knows when that will be

I'm 6'1, and started training at ~260lbs. Before I had to leave the academy and city I was training in due to my job, the last time I weighed in for competition (Atlanta Winter Open in 2017), I was down to 197lbs with my competition gi on. Unfortunately, the change hasn't been particularly good for my waistline over the last 3 years, as I'm now back up to the weight I was when I first started training.

It's been a combination of work, and all the nearby academies having class schedules that don't really fit my work timeline. Being in aviation, I get called out at all hours, and it's greatly interfered with my ability to train regularly. It's also been difficult to find a gym that feels like "home", much like the one I had been training at for ~5yrs before I left. That might be more of a contributing factor than I'm letting myself admit.

So far I'm 5'7" and i'm 230 Pounds. So far, unless my partner is a stick, I'm with the philosophy of never letting the ground carry your weight. I'm pretty early in my BJJ life though, so that's subject to change.

My instructor is a big fellow. He taught me how to murdercrush folks. It's glorious. I'm lanky and tall, but nothing brings more joy that handing out a smashing.

I think it's not how much you weight, but how well you use it. When you know how, it sure helps to have more of it. :D

im 193cm usually around 93kg,
atm slightly over 100kg tho cause of the rona i guess

that should be roughly 6'3 and 220 Pounds ?

either way i almost never smash, cause i feel mean when i do lol
so naturally nobody ever complains about me...

i play mostly guard as its more fun for me
usually even tiny women enjoy rolls with me :)

tho sometimes i smash for like a few seconds just to provoke a reaction
dunno i also get super bored smashing...

but there is technical smashing which people shouldnt really complain about
(unless you go 100% on somebody half your size)
and theres asshole smashing, like shoving your shoulder into someones mouth and nose area for example which kinda sucks...

being huge is useful in comp tho as you can go hard in case your tech is not enough to win

PS: 'asshole smashing' sounds very weird...
