Then ask for rank validation, from another complete stranger...

No there aren't. Chaos reigns.

Hello D.
I think you should not miss use your powers. You have the power to down vote and you seem to want to use it to keep members inline. "If you are not nice, I will take a way your candy".

I think it would be fair to keep the power of down voting for actual fake profiles and belt ranks. You need to find a better way to expose bad behavious or dumb behaviour.

Ofcourse this is an open site and you are allowed to bully as much as you want. And I am sure you are acting in good intentions.

Actually I'm with Daniel. I get more notifications "please verify my rank" from strangers here, then messages on Facebook from Pakistan sport articles companies and sexy girls asking me whatsapp number and credit card number. One of the obvious debate that might arise around this website is that very often downvotes will not be given just for politeness and/or to not look bad in front of the person we are disputing.

Maybe we should just kill that button to request verification and leave it to people to send messages instead? Would make people less trigger happy about it, perhaps?

Francesco, i think that hesitation to downvote is a good thing. If people were too quick to downvote it could easily spiral into cyber bullying. Since a negative/downvoted profile may suggest or imply that they are not a legit or fake. It's probably best that people would hesitate to downvote based on "i find this guy to be annoying."

When i see a profile in the negative points, i don't think "this guy is annoying online," my train of thought is more along the lines of "this guy must be a fake."

The power to downvote is like a superpower. "with great power comes great responsibility."-Uncle Ben

What about a Netiquette note on the front page? "Don't ask verification to people you have no connection whatsoever, especially if they arenot even in the same continent. It looks silly". Something like that.

I wholeheartedly agree about removing that button. I think the idea of a nettiquette is good, but I have a suspicion that a lot of people are either not going to read it, or ignore it.

I'm not even rank verified to be able to vote and I've started getting these. I wouldn't mind the button dying, but I do think it might be something that's useful after enough voting points are available in an area so that new profiles in a year or so can expedite their process of asking their actual friends. If it sticks around, I think it would be nice if it was limited to having at least one thing in common (location, affiliation, instructor in rank history, etc) to reduce spam.

Honestly it’s part of the process and makes people reach out to others. Some people may be nowhere near other areas, and don’t branch out that much.

I’m meeting new people here already by reaching out, and starts a dialog with them.

Of course we will get more votes from people within the same association. But again so far I’ve enjoyed the forum and message discussions.

To begin, people should read the actual profile of the person they are contacting.

Both me and aaron have a disclaimer on there NOT to cold call. Still we get loads.

There is now a setting under "edit profile" -> "invitations" if you wish to disable invitations for your profile :)

I think like Ryan Gabey, we have the "problem" that we knows not so much people, and the people we knows are also not verify. I asked to check my profile and the answer was, "I don't know you.' OK that's right and OK for me , but i don't want to have a negative vote because of my question.

Once more ppl get verification, and just speaking in what I plan on doing. Is I will research persons needing verification, and will happily cast my vote even if I don’t personally know them.

well the " please verify my rank" doesnt really mean that you need to know the person perosnally but i may know who the instructor and can vouche for the legitimacy of the promotion and ranks .

I may have pressed a few " please verfiy me" but to my defense, there are only a few people that i Personally know that is on here and they wouldnt do me any justice since they are unverified also. I know that ALOT of you know who is Robson Moura is and a few more who my direct professor Jeff Mitchell is. So i asked for a voucher off of those bases.

I would like this environment be something more than just "documents seem legit" page. As I've said previously - then it'd just double IBJJF certs. BJJ has reached a stage where people buy belts, jump ranks (without merit), are promoted online, do some weird kata-ish stuff to "pass exams" etc. To me - it's a sport as well as a martial art. You have to display skill AND/OR display coaching skills in a way that your students can display skills. In regards that - picture with a BJJ historic figure and/or signed cert are not enough for me.

Does this need a new thread?

As much as that would be great... WE all know that some cant teach and some cant display certain techniques correctly no matter what rank. ive seen legit Black belts completely crap the bed when they are coaching in competions but are great during instructions in class.

There really isnt going to be a sound way to 100% ... WE have to run this on an honor system and sadly enough we know that can only take us but so far... any further it will require the same thing that IBJJ does with thier ID cards they charge for every year.. But if a person has one of those. I think you Validation for this page should be Accepted automatically becuase your paper work to be signed by a certified 2nd degree or higher that is registerd with them to validate the rank as is....

As my photo ID I submitted my ibjjf card showing certification. Also my academy certification paperwork. Doesn’t hurt to have that along with the votes.

Shawn we can agree to disagree :) But mind you - I wrote and/or. Meaning I am okay with good athletes who are bad coaches AND good coaches who are bad athletes (and I don't mean you have to do it for living or smth... just the ability to pass the art on.

But if someone is not a good coach and can't roll according to belt level neither... well what the hell is the belt for then?

I don't think that alot of places even do a Certificate for thier gym but i maybe mistaken. i know that both the gyms I was affiliated with doesn't give you paperwork until they receive thier black belt. but that just gym preference.

Maybe only have the 'invite to verify' button once you've 'friended' a person? Makes them less trigger happy?

Thanks for the "invitations" checkbox. I already added my "rules" to my profile description.
The crazy thing is my white belt wife being asked to verify black belts when she has no verification points to give. It makes me think the invitations checkbox should default to disallowing invitations to vote, at least for white belts.
