Hey,

what about getting your black belt degrees? Is it absolutely necessary to get promoted to f.e. first degree after three years by an instructor with I guess second degree?

Or is it possible to be autimatically promoted to first degree just by three years passing by?

I just saw in Christian Graugarts profile, that his second degree rank is time served.

So will beltchecker-site accept and certify a first degree rank after a time of three years or not?

Could make sense to me as even if you get promoted from an instructor, there are no obvious requirements than the required time period.

In my personal case there is no insctructor who could promote me, but I am interested to get my ranks as I want to promote my own students to black belt in the near future.

Thanks for your answers!!!

There is no requirement to wait for an instructor to promote you through the black belt degrees. Once registered with the IBJJF for example you can apply to have your first degree 3 years from that date (providing you pay them another $150)

As I understand it, a promoting professor after your initial black belt is largely ceremonial. As long as you're active as a jiu jitsu practitioner your stripes are a function of time. As far as belt checker recognizing that, it would just be the opinions of those who chose to verify your rank or not. It's organic like that. My suspicion is that it would be just fine with the vast majority of people here. Let's see what others say...

Also in relation to how the beltchecker site recognises degrees, its in the FAQ's;
Thanks, was just about to post a screenshot of that :)

IBJJF offers promotion of black belt degrees based purely on time. As long as you keep paying them following your first black belt registration, they will send you certificates for the degrees once you're up for them - no signature from a professor needed.

We talk a little bit about this in my latest podcast episode: https://www.bjjglobetrott[...]e-special/

I wouldn't want a rank for 'time served' to be honest, I'm romantic like that!
I completely understand....but being romantic would keep myself a black belt without degrees for the next 20 years and I couldnt graduate my students to blackbelt...

To be fair, I think the actual (unofficial, one can say) requirement for black belt ranks are time served AND maintaining a relationship with a hierarchical superior. This can be either a person or IBJJF.

IBJJF also requires that you pay for and attend their rules seminar so they can milk more money out of you. Also, the rules seminars are only offered where there are IBJJF tournaments, so if you don’t live near one you will have to travel. Fuck the IBJJF.

Charles do the IBJJF require this (and a CPR certificate) for each degree?

Yes but it’s not difficult to get a CPR certification.

I didn't know this. It is indeed a cash cow. . .

I'm missing something, aren't you with Henry's group? With all the black belts coming over from Alliance HQ?

The promoting instructor needs to be a third degree black belt now, not second; it was changed several years back. Also, I was required to have my Professor sign my IBJJF promotion form to obtain my first degree. Additionally, I just renewed my IBJJF annual membership and my Professor had to log onto his IBJJF account to verify me.

“The membership form of a provisional black belt athlete must be signed by a black belt with minimum graduation of 3 (three) degrees.”

A provisional black belt is defined as someone who has never registered any of their previous ranks. They are the only people who require a 3rd degree’s signature.

Scott, the promotion to black belt must be authorised by a professor of 2 degrees. This hasn't changed.

This is for all athletes who have been registered through the IBJJF in previous years. The requirement for a 3rd degree black belt is only for those athletes who would be deemed provisional black belts ie those that have not previously been registered in the IBJJF system.

Once reached the black belt it is mandatory to adopt the IBJJF system of time served following the issuance of an IBJJF diploma.

All of this of course is only relevant if you want to be recognised under the IBJJF system

Yes, that is the current ibjjf standard. But, does the jiu jitsu community-at-large support that? It seems to me it takes you six years to earn a second degree and it should take you about six years to bring a new student from white belt to Black belt. therefore the old standard of second-degree black belt makes much more sense. The new standard of third-degree / 9 years seems a bit much to me. But I don't make the rules. The question is who does? The ibjjf?

There is no new system of 9years. Check my post above.

This is not required at the moment, at least. Since I have been registered with them for seven years as black belt, they offered to sell me a certificate for second degree, signature from instructor not necessary. I just didn't feel like spending $1000+ for a useless piece of paper.

Promotion by time served is another way of the ibjjf to sell you something you personally value and this alone is to my mind a reason to avoid it. Honest question: how's being promoted by time served different from buying a belt online?

I'm in the process of trying to register with the IBJJF, as my instructor is a 3rd degree but no IBJJF registered. I was told that I will be provisional for 2 years, and my 3 year wait for first degree will start at the end of the two years, even though I've been a black belt for over 3 years already. That's assuming that I can find a registered 3rd degree to sign for me, which I have thus far been unable to locate. Quite a process.

Yep, time served only counts after successful issuance of an IBJJF diploma and if you're a provisional black belt its an extra 2 years. It does make you wonder what the point of it all is.

It is not. You can buy the promotion online from IBJJF and it's fully legitimized by the BJJ community.

I am also against black belt degrees myself - I think it's silly and I don't wear them on my belt, nor will I ever. The red bar recently fell off and I am forever free from worrying about putting tape on it :D

The only reason why I've registered the 2nd degree here on the site was to test the voting points system early on and also because I wanted 150 of them haha

When I registered as a first degree, the IBJJF said they had no record of me. They asked me to take a photo of my IBJJF black belt certificate that they sent me 3 years previous. I did and they registered me. How’s that for professional?

Whoa whoa whoa, only six years to get to black belt? This seems well below the average amount of time for anyone to get a black belt. Isn't the average about 10 years?

Unfortunately for me I just signed up to the IBJJF a year ago so I'm just a lonely black belt, they wouldn't accept my degrees from my professor. They want to get paid..... I'm not renewing my IBJJF after it expires this year so I guess it really doesn't matter. My professor and peers know so that's all I really care about.

I think 3000+ points here from the community should be plenty of verification :)
