From a voting-verification point of view, any change of promoter must of principle always be reconfirmed. Even if it's the same name as you had confirmed already, it technically doesn't have to be the same person you would want manually added. TECHNICALLY.

Let's imagine there are two instructors called Marcelo Garcia in BJJ, one really good and one really bad. You put up pictures of you with the bad one as your instructor and convince people to vote for you based on the assumption that he is your instructor. Then later on, the good one creates a profile and we allow manually linking to that, based on name being the same. You then remove the old pictures and traces of the bad version of Marcelo. That way, you've ended up with a verified profile, stating that you're a student of the real Marcelo Garcia.

I know this is a very far fetched, theoretical scenario, but when we think scaling and a few 100k users, then these guidelines must be very strict. Both because of the risk of fraud and names being the same, but also because we don't want to risk ending up with a lot of manual work to fix things up in the database. We have plenty on our hands already :)

So out of principle, if you want to change the field of who promoted you, you should also be up for re-verification. No matter if the name is the same or not.

It is not really an issue though, as everyone will be noticed and they'll quickly reconfirm your votes :)
