HAHAH, that dude jump into the lion den on false pretenses and drew the King lion. TOo funny... he is actually lucky that andre was easy on him. i know some black belts that get kinda upset with someone trying to fake the funk and will pull a Palhares type submission to teach them a lesson .

Galvao's opponent in that video, Martin Suarez, is not now, and was never an IBJJF black belt.

Nor, to my knowledge is he a BJJ black belt of any kind.

Just a walk on, at a tournament that allowed walk ons.

What tournament was this, I wonder? Looks like the referees are wearing IBJJF clothes but I could be wrong of course

I talked to Andre about that video. That happened like 14yrs ago, before he even started Atos. I'm not sure if it was IBJJF or not, but it was some sort of open in which the people were free to enter as whatever belt they wanted.

So the guy who essentially invented his own art that was some mix of Judo and Karate entered the black belt division and drew Andre as his first fight.

What lead to that demonstration was a couple of attempts at single digit manipulation and a heel hook attempt. Personally I'm impressed by Andre's restraint.

Lol he considers himself a brown belt in BJJ. I did better than that against Andre as newly minted Blue Belt. Guy is delirious.

This was IBJJF Worlds. However, it happened pre certification/belt cards. The black belt cards came the year after. At that point in time, anyone could register at any belt and compete at any tournament as long as they paid. I think this incident may have expedited the cards being required.

Back then is when you hear the story of a young BJ Penn traveling to Brazil with his brother because his brother was going to do worlds. BJ decided to jump in last minute but realized that Worlds didn't have a white belt division so he competed as a blue and won his weight division. He comes back to US and Ralph promotes him to blue belt. It used to be an unorganized mess and now they run, imho, one of the best, organized, ontime tournaments.
