This doesn't really matter for anything that serious, just my own curiosity on other people's experience more than anything else.

For those of you who have trained in more than just BJJ, particularly if you did other grappling arts prior to starting your BJJ training:

In your profile, for promotion history, did you put down the first day that you ever did actual "Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu" as your training career start date? Or did you go with something earlier?

For example, I first began training self-defense, karate/kickboxing and submission grappling in January of 1993.

I entered my first BJJ/grappling tournament in September of 1998. But I never got my first actual Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu lesson with a legit BJJ black belt until 2002.

I could theoretically put ANY of these dates down for my "start" date as a white belt, I suppose....

For "Promotion History," what did YOU put down as your "white belt" date?

I put down when I started BJJ in 2002. I started training in the martial arts in the summer of 1984. By the time I started training in jiu jitsu I had black belt ranks in two styles of karate and tae kwon do. This summer will be my 36th year in martial arts and my 18th year in jiu jitsu.

When you took part in your first BJJ class seems like a reasonable starting date. I think quite a lot of us did other stuff to varying degrees (e.g., I dabbled in MMA from 2003-2006, before stepping into the Roger Gracie Academy, with various other martial arts before that from the mid '90s on), but it's hard enough to keep track of just BJJ belts. No need to muddy the waters. :)

I don’t think I ever took a first “real” BJJ class actually, so technically I haven’t even started yet :D Best bet would be some seminars or camps but I might never have taken a class in an academy as far as I remember

ok you can't just quote straight out of the Chronicles of Deepak Rao as if I don't have a signed copy. That's just plagiarism! You need to finesse it a little. Lol.

The purpose of this site is to verify belts in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu so in my opinion it only makes sense to use the date you started BJJ. When you attend your first class in BJJ, you start as a White Belt regardless of past experience in other arts.

You're more than welcome to drop in for a class anytime you want after coronavirus is better controlled. I'm assuming you're a Globetrotters member to take advantage of the free drop-in training.

Edit: typo
