In Florida gyms are allowed to reopen today with "proper precautions" in place. So, the fitness kickboxing program I'm involved with is up and running starting this evening. Also, a number of jiu jitsu gyms locally are restarting with limited participants and heavy emphasis on individual drills.
Is anyone else open for business?

In Delaware, we are allegedly opening on June 1, but that will be Phase 1 and it's unclear if BJJ gyms are realistically able to open at that point. They are able to technically be open at 30% capacity, but social distancing still has to be observed...

Well, so far it sounds like we're the guinea pigs. Quite frankly, that's fine with me.
Yeah, I wish we could just open and allow people the choice of whether to train or not. I'm willing to take my chances at this point.

We opened Monday night. No contact allowed so we're doing "BJJ fit"
No rolling or partner work but it's something

In London . . . No :(
Any word on when they might let you guys up? Or are they just waiting to see how many of us keel over from having reopened early?

Ha - nope, it's going to be a long while, I suspect. The UK govt fucked up its response to covid 19 almost as badly as the US, the PM is almost as incompetent as Trump too. So I don't expect to be able to open my gym back up until September, quite possibly longer. Given the UK medical experts said that some form of social distancing will be required until the end of the year, that does not bode well for BJJ in this country.

The one spark of hope is that a vaccine is being trialled at the moment, which if it works (BIG if) could allegedly be ready as soon as September, apparently. I imagine that even if that all goes well it will take ages to roll out, but it is much sooner than I expected, so that's some cause for optimism. Though yeah, just as possible that it doesn't work and we're back to square one (or the Tories do something stupid, again ;) ).

September at the earliest! I don't have words for how much that sucks. If they tried that here, I'm pretty sure my buddies would be walking around saying "the first rule of fight club is..." . ;)

Ha - thanks, but it could certainly be worse. I can at least still teach Zoom classes, as I live with somebody who is willing to let me use them as a demo partner. Also, I'm financially ok at the mo, so I feel very lucky given how many other people right now are in trouble.

But yeah, if this keeps on for longer than a few months, that could get tricky for me. Even then, my parents offered to help, which is reassuring if I need it. Not something I want to rely on, nice to know it's an option though. :)

Here we will reopen on Monday 25 May with many restrictions: disinfection of the area between courses, safety distance of one meter between athletes, the use of showers is prohibited, etc.

What’s up with Jiu Jitsu without fighting?
I don’t like to train hop arround and do stuff that people do in gyms.
I want to choke and armbar young and old men

Ha - true, but jiu jitsu without sparring is still better than no jiu jitsu at all, I'd say. But then I prefer technique and drilling over sparring most of the time anyway, so I'm atypical (and lazy). ;D

My solo drills classes are still going ok, plus my uke is getting better. Meaning the bit I do at the end is getting increasingly like sparring (though we don't have the space to do it properly, she does at least now give me good reactions, so I can improve my grilled chicken/shell guard).

Our government has decided to treat the British public like absolute children and so they don't tell us anything. A good contrast would be Sweden.

Technically you can get away with training with one other person since social distancing isn't actually law and it wouldn't be a gathering of 3 people. So it's getting towards the stage where the hardcore are going to train anyway, just not in gyms. Which really sucks for gym owners, but personally i haven't altered my membership. It's a pretty divisive subject overall.
