Hi over 40 grapplers,
what supplements, if any, do you take that you find help you stay healthy on the mats?

I supplemented through my more active sport days then became agnostic and totally dropped it but now am getting back into it again. So far I'm thinking like this:
Creatine (a must when training)
Vitamin D
Vitamin C
Occasional Zinc
Occasional Iron
Occasional B-complex
Protein if dietary is not enough in current period (aiming at 1-2 grams per BM lbs / average of 1.5 g per BM kg)

Overall still trying to put the picture together... still on the fence about Omega 3 and glucosamine...

I'm in and out supplements for whatever reason.

Vit. C, D, K2, B-complex -> fairly regular
Zinc + melatonin before sleeping for those days where I have serious troubles sleeping
CBD in drops for recovery: I think it works but there might be some placebo effect, I don't know

Protein when I was more obsessed with training and nutrition, now I only use them as meal replacement if I'm in a hurry or something like that.

Actually there is a kind of non alcoholic protein beer with bcaa you can order... doesn’t tastes like „real“ beer though...

Joybräu gives me a stomach ache and horrible gas coming out of both ends :D
Yeah...I tested it recently and 100% favour reel beer over that protein brew...

I can assure you, Francesco, I regret trying it.... but hey, at least now I know it’s not for me.

Sounds similar to what I'm doing,
Multi with B, C, magnesium, calcium & zinc
Krill oil
CDB

Is creatine is a worthwhile addition if I'm just doing jits?

I don't take any, I'm lazy. Although I'm 39, so not quite in the 40+ club yet, I have been considering stuff that even my lazy arse can start taking. E.g., powder I can throw into my daily smoothie: I was thinking whey would be good, I'd like to get more protein into my diet (but I'm FAR too lazy to do that the sensible way, by cooking proper meals or whatever). :P

Handy that this thread reminded to go check out some whey, as it turns out MyProtein.com are doing a sitewide 45% off at the mo. I haven't tried them before, so seems like a good time to give them a go.

I'll be 49 later this year. I take a multivitamin, Jocko Joint Warfare, and Krill Oil daily.

Creatine has a lot of contraindications, if you really want to take it I can recommend alkaline one: it costs more but you don't load and unload, and it does less harm to the kidneys and liver.

No it doesn't - longitudinal studies show it's fine, and the simplest monohydrate is the most efficient.

I do not question its efficiency, but the overload it has on internal organs. At least that's the information I have, sharing my gym with doctors and professional body builders.

As personal experience, I also tell you that I used creatine monohydrate for a short period during which I made several matches of k1 or muay thai and from clinical analyzes it showed me enlarged liver and high bilirubineria. With alkaline creatine this has never happened to me.

Creatine does have contraindications,

namely for people with a history of liver disease, kidney disease, diabetes,

people who regularly take ibuprofen or naproxen,

and people who take diuretics.

Almost any supplement or drug that has a real effect on the body,

also has contraindications.

And, also, as Paracelsus said centuries ago, the difference between a substance being harmless, beneficial, or a poison, often comes down to the dose.

I would add that we have found in more recent times that what can be beneficial for one seemingly healthy person, may be harmful to another, for example allergies, and other examples of non-tolerance of a substance that is generally harmless or beneficial to others at similar doses.

On another note, Jiu-Jitsu black belt medical advice when the black belt does not have medical training, medical licensure, and medical credentials is generally about as reliable as asking a random person at a skateboard rink or at a surf spot for medical advice, so long as you first rule out that they are not a medical doctor first...

It's a fair point William, but asking people in the same sport as you for their experience can definitely give guidance and narrow down possible avenues of investigation
especially when they take the time to link to articles that support their assertions
