I can't see a release date but I'm looking forward to watching this!
http://closedguardfilm.com/
「This film traces the journey of Japanese martial arts to Brazil, telling the stories of lesser-known characters whose contributions were instrumental in the development of what would become known as “Brazilian Jiujitsu”.」
Heard of it from this podcast
https://theroughandtumble[...]-drysdale/
Robert Drysdale is the project's public face
https://www.youtube.com/w[...]QzpE8kiZtE
(Robert Drysdale submits Marcello Garcia ADCC 2007)
Their focus on the history of Judo and Catch Wrestling resonates as I often joke that we train 嘉納柔術寝技 - Kano Jūjutsu Newaza and I love those old videos of the 1920's or 1950's of Judo ground work.
cheers,
gerald

Yep, it's been talked about for years. Sounds cool (the more carefully researched BJJ history that's out there, the better), but I'll wait until it's actually out before I get excited. Until then, we've got three volumes of Choque. :D

Yep! I hear you. Robert is working on it for years...looking forward to the movie though.
The Choque books by Pedreira were an eye opener to me , too and I love all the research and evidence they bring in the „Choque“ books about the Development of Jiu Jitsu in Brazil, and that more people were involved than Maeda, Carlos and Helio, like George Gracie, Takeo Yano, Geo Omori, Yacintho Ferro, Donato dos Pires Reis, the Ono Brothers, etc...

Thanks guys, I wasn't aware of the Choque series https://www.amazon.com/Ch[...]B00JL3L44S
İt's a fascinating read, though it is extremely dry, so more like an academic study than a rollicking narrative. I've got a few more books listed in the footnotes for the big history post I compiled a few years ago: http://www.slideyfoot.com[...]u-bjj.html

Yeah, Can Sönmez is correct: the Choque books are a dry read, but I found it really interesting on the other had. Facts, evidence and truth....lots of old articles And pics from Brazilian newspapers....

In reference to the Tanabe vs Fusen Ryu, Syd Hoare also had a great article about Tanabe here: http://sydhoare.com/FUSEN.pdf
I'm fairly confident, based on what I've seen about Tanabe and Fusen Ryu, that the JudoForum stance is correct. If anyone is in the UK or Ireland (notably London and Dublin), a few libraries over there seem to have copies of Syd Hoare's History of Judo that may have more information on the introduction of groundwork to judo. I'm having a hard time coming by a copy here in the US to verify that though.

Dry read is an understatement. I managed to get through the first one but it was a struggle. Looking forward to this movie though!

Drysdale has been pushing a bunch of history info out through the film's IG account and writes periodic articles for this website:
http://global-training-report.com/
The film suppose to come out this month, and I'm pretty damn excited.

Cool, I should check that book out, as I pass through London regularly (when there isn't a global death plague happening, at least ;) ).
I have Dicky Bowen's two volume history sitting in my attic, so there is probably something about it in there too. Admittedly I haven't read all the way through: it's even drier than Choque. For BJJ history I can plough through, judo history, not quite as motivated.
Though arguably as judo is the parent art, that's technically BJJ history too. :)

I've found Syd Hoare's talks and articles more akin to Donn Draeger than Roberto Pedreira if that's any incentive, though again, I haven't gotten ahold of A History of Judo in particular to say how it individually holds up.

If you ever come to visit me here in Bristol, IIRC there is an archive of Syd Hoares paper's over at the University of Bath, not far from here. :)

great read!
Fusen-ryū (不遷流, Fusen-ryū) as the OG guard pullers (allegedly)
or at least Mataemon Tanabe (田辺又右衛門, Tanabe Mataemon, 1869–1942)
I'm only half-way through and thoroughly enjoying that history... Now if we could only get Dan Carlin to make a Podcast out of it.

Ha, that would be cool (his podcast is excellent), but I thought he only did military history? :)

so... it's been two years since my hopeful post about this coming documentary...
http://closedguardfilm.com/
seems like the folks who were cautiously skeptical about an imminent release were quite right ^^
has anybody heard anything about it?

I saw last week Robert Drysdale commented on Instagram saying: "We are back in the production. Spoke to the new team today. We will make an announcement soon.". Hopefully that's correct and there will be something soon, although I'm not getting my hopes up until there's something more official

Well, at least it seems a better process than the Red Belt movie...

I read the book and enjoyed it, but the length of time it has taken to come out with the documentary is nothing short of disappointing. Drysdale is now pushing a pre-release for another book. I bought into it because I love learning about the history behind my interests, but hopefully the film drops in the near future.

Yeah, I remain sceptical. I've seen this happen several times now in BJJ (though Drysdale isn't ripping off investors, AFAIK, unlike the dubious shenanigans of the Red Belt 'documentary').

This is excellent. I’m going to forward your article to the students in my BJJ college class. Thanks!

Thanks! Always nice to know it's still being read (though I should update, it's been a long time).

I ordered that one as well. Have you received your copy yet?
