Stop. Voting. For. Strangers.
Especially those who have nothing more to add but: "Seems legit! OSS!"
Case in point.
The "most trusted" Italian practicioner on this site, is probably the LEAST trusted Italian practicioner in Italy.

Yep. If I haven't met you, I won't vote for you. Hopefully, as the site continues to grow, people will stop voting for people they've got zero connection with.

Great reason to end the voting once you hit the max required. Just saying.
Maybe allow the votes past the max required but without adding additional points. So the vote is superficial carries no extra points.

We all hope to cash something from the future Netflix adaptation
Let's write a script about this... I think Sacha Baron Cohen or Will Ferrell would be interested in acting in a main role

I would propose Al Pacino as Sir William Murphy, Vin Diesel as Rigoberto Gonzalez, Daniel Day Lewis as sir Bertina, Will Ferrell as myself, James Franco as J. Madaro, Jason Statham as Francesco Fonte, Orlando Bloom as Tatu

On a more serious note,
part of the reason I try to encourage the community of black belts
to be cautious about investing in matters that may in the end,
be somewhat petty.
This year, across the world, people died,
were made prisoners in their homes for months,
lost their livelihoods.
They are stressed out enough,
without we, like a snake that eats its own tail,
not standing together, to support ourselves, and our own,
during this time.
This is what the streets of the United States look like today:
https://www.facebook.com/[...]079951427/
Sometimes, in the act of burning those we think we oppose,
we burn ourselves, with how we choose to direct our efforts.

Come on guys lets face it this site really seems to be set up as a break from the organizations that certify rank as a financial tool to control BJJ.. In truth we get the rank from out professor that's what matters.. People register rank with the IBJJF and SJJIF for the purpose of being able to compete and to promote their students within the organization...
As a community based program this is the natural evolution of what is going to happen people are going to come up with personal criteria for voting.. The effort to tell others how to vote actually is an attempt to control once again..
Sorry as far as I am concerned if your teacher is a recognized as someone who can award a black belt and he awarded you a black belt you are a black belt... I may think you suck but you are in fact a black belt

I think that we can see if a coach who is on here claims someone is great, but I know plenty of people who have had fallings out with their coach after years, so some secondary system at least ensures that once promoted you don't lose that just because someone is vindictive. The voting system gives something like that.
While I can respect that telling folks how to vote is itself a form of control, it's still their vote and ultimately up to them, but I think it undermines any credibility the vote may have if it's tit-for-tat rather than having some basis for voting for them.

Some might say allowing a lower belt to vote for the ability of a senior belt undermines any credibility..
I joined this site as a direct result of their issue with the IBJJF because I have been in combat sports all my life and am sick of the political BS people use to make money off the backs of others.. What some are doing here reminds me of the Karate guys in the 80's who hated the bowing, titles and other BS but as soon as they opened a school it was the first thing they did..
I am not interested in people telling me what BJJ is supposed to be and isn't supposed to be

What if the basis is a well documented profile and obvious proof of valid promotion by a respected instructor? I think that’s more the case here, regardless of rumors of skill level. I highly doubt this person would have received so many votes had the profile been empty.

I'm less concerned about the specific incident of the Italians being referenced - I think Cosimo is very likely a black belt based on what you can find off of this site as well. I'm more concerned with a precedent of voting where folks don't know the individual, the instructor, or anything else about the person. There absolutely are cases where folks are voting after researching the individual in question, and I wouldn't want to discourage that; but there also seem to be cases of folks voting without doing that due diligence and that seems dangerous. If folks are doing external research, it would look far more transparent to note "Contacted X, who verified they promoted them" or "Verified via IBJJF database and instructor" rather than the "Good to go" or "Verified" comments that seem to be frequent. I would also note, just because someone has a name that is in the IBJJF database does not mean that is the same person, so knowing them or having some way beyond photos of certificates would seem more important than how filled out the profile is.
Having said that, I don't think this defines what BJJ is or isn't. This just defines what this site is used for. As has been discussed - this site does not define what belt I am, the instructor promoting me does, and I don't think this site invalidates that, but in giving confidence to a given individual being a given rank some degree of certainty seems to require more than some are giving it.

I regularly point out that psychology is a pseudo-science, not a science,
and it's practitioner's artists, not scientists.
However, there have been attempts at what we now call psychology that are at least as old as language.
So, I feel inclined to ask,
when we hear someone, or a group of people,
railing so passionately that someone outside their clique is not good enough,
I always wonder, are they really giving voice, to that voice inside their own head,
whispering to them, that old demon, saying in the ancient tongue,
"You are not good enough, you are not good enough, you will never be good enough".
And that is not a demon I have any interest in feeding.
Out of all the demons that fly through the night sky,
I have never found much use, or fruit, from that particular eldritch lilin.
A petty little spirit, that can only feed on those that choose to feed it.

The community also has the power to affect other people’s voting criteria by voicing their opinion, both here in the forum and as comments on votes. It’s up to the community to judge if any criteria is important enough to change by commenting on it. If enough people point out that a vote is too “weak”, maybe it will have an effect. So just to repeat myself as always, the voting criteria will be defined organically by the community.
Start commenting on “bad votes” if you want to affect them. I do sometimes :)

Wasn't there an entire fake black belt that ended up verified?
I figured that'd be lesson enough to be at least a little cautious for who you vote for.

So basically it's all experimental, and we just keep the flow going, waiting and see how the community, or mob, evolute, or devolute, without a guide line?
I think that in the beginning, there was a guide line, and it was the simple question "Do you know - this person--and verify his rank?" but most of the people just didn't read the question.
Ps. If you want to avoid the like 4 like policy, for example we could just keep the upvote anonymous(for the community, not for moderators) , so none knows who upvoted him, and he could not give him a feedback just for sympathy.
Downvotes should be kept not-anonymous because the disputed person should always have the possibility to defend himself. Just an idea

I would like the ability to REMOVE upvotes given to me by strangers.
If we've never met or had any interaction whatsoever, I honestly don't care for your upvote.
I think that would make for a more honest representation.
DOWNVOTES would still stand, of course (I don't have any, but still). Unless the community agrees with a majority decision, or something.
