I've heard the hand grip we use to do a kimura called a "figure four" grip.

Since the hand configuration for a rear naked choke is also used for other submissions, does the grip itself have a name independent of any actual submission?

you know what......i don't think it does. I've always just heard it said "lock it up like a rear naked". Tenth planet is big on making up names....perhaps they have one?

Glad I'm not just being stupid, but I feel like it should have a name! It's essentially the same grip that makes a north-south choke and a d'arce choke.

IDK I never lock NS onto bicep. Also in RNC I always aim to grab my own trap as opposed to bicep... Might be a generalisation too far...

However when I use it for kneebar variation or single leg I just call it "RNC grip"

Most people I ever see just call it the RNC grip, since it's so common knowledge to people.

No need to reinvent the wheel on it, I suppose.

The lack of any kind of consistent vocabulary is a real issue in jiu-jitsu.
There do seem to be at least 3 names for each major leg lock position!

I'v only seen 3 names for the one. Honeyhole, Saddle, 4-11.

The others are solidly 50/50 and ashi. I can't wait to learn all 500 leg lock position and sub positions and names. I'll be the master of all. The avatar of leg locks!

Yep, it's irritating. Not only are there multiple names for the same technique, sometimes one name will be used for multiple techniques. E.g., I've seen a whole bunch of different techniques all using the term 'smash pass'.

Oh but honeyhole and 411 are different, depending on who you ask. Don't forget "Inside Sankaku" as well. Inside Ashi is also known as 'game over' and 'leg knot'. Basically most positions have a 10th planet name, a Japanese name and then some other name from wherever.

Another benefit of NoGi, it's not about guard passing. it's just 2 people playing footsie until something pops.

Idk. I still see a bunch of rubber guard from the 10p guys. they all try for the dead orchard these days too.
