I'd like to share an idea that may be stupid (or that will end up being a new feature).
Being a recent BJJ practitioner compared to many of you (and considering my young age), I lack of objectivity , hence this call for comments.
From the beginning I've been hearing that the BJJ is a kind of human chess. A 2 player game, with a succession of attacks, defenses, strategies that confront each other... like in chess.
Nevertheless in chess there is one more thing, the Elo rating.
Would it be relevant to add some kind of Elo world ranking, and suddenly I think the beltchecker base would be perfect for that.
I open the discussion, thank you for informing me. That even may have been mentioned before, but I didn't find it.

Well the big obvious difference is that chess is turn-based while BJJ is an RTS. :)
However in regards of world rating - that'd be harder to implement as chess can be played online. IBJJF has their own rankings but that's a different thing... In a futuristic world it'd be cool if there would be "agreed upon competitive sparring" matches which would be automatically logged into a worldwide system.

It's not a stupid idea, quite an interesting one really. In principle there's no reason there couldn't be a single number than represents a BJJ skill level, it's more the practical problems around how it would be calculated. It would be quite useful too because there's quite a difference between a purple belt (and above) who makes their living from BJJ and a hobbyist who trains 3 times a week. I do an unstructured calculation of my opponents before a competition and can usually predict the podium pretty accurately based on their win-loss, method of victory and the level of competitions they've done. It's only really first time competitors that mess up my predictions.
I actually don't think BJJ is very similar to chess at all. Chess has a 'perfect strategy' which is why computers can do it better than humans. Fighting in general is a chaos system because the components of the system react to expectations within the system. Like a stock market. Some people can go out there with the same strategy every time and just execute it so well, that they can't be stopped - even though their opponent knows what's coming. That is sort of like chess. But you need some real gifts for that to happen and i would say that a lot more people will have success by tricking their opponent and not doing exactly what is expected, or funnelling the opponent away from their strengths. Using your skills in reverse is not a concept in chess and it's where the comparisons seriously break down in my opinion.

ELO is simple - it's based on sparring and competition matches. However a "match" is much easier to standardize in chess.
