+ a few other comps in the US. What are your feelings about this? People should check their temperature at home themselves, that seems a bit like a not very serious approach. How much effort would it take to AT LEAST take temperatures at entrance??

https://ibjjf.com/events/[...]nship-2020

"For the sake of all competitors and staff, please check your temperature BEFORE coming to the event. If there are any signs of symptoms or high temperature, please remain at home and contact your health provider. This is extremely important for everyone involved.

If you are currently sick or have been exposed to someone that has tested positive for COVID- 19, please stay at home and contact your health provider.

All of our equipment will be properly sanitized prior to and during the event throughout the day.

Masks or face shields will be required to be worn inside the building and can only be removed for your matches. "

I'm not impressed/disagree with the decision. Two people from my gym have decided to go compete & I hope they do well but the "restrictions" for the event don't really strike me as effective for what they are trying to do, etc. I was out for a morning walk a bit ago and ran into one of my teammates who was out running and we chatted briefly (6 feet apart, and masked). His brother trains in Atlanta (relative hot spot compared to Maine) and their gym is "sending it" with packed classes and tons of new sign ups, etc.

We're both convinced if the IBJJF "pulls off" Pans (whatever that means) that they will probably try to have Worlds in December.

I'm not too concerned since Covid-19 affects older people and people with pre-existing conditions like obesity. The median age of Covid-19 deaths in one study I saw was 78 years old so healthy athletes competing are at very low risk. The aren't any spectators allowed so infecting grandma coming to watch isn't a factor either. It seems like the restrictions in place should help reduce the risks on already a low risk population.

they should have tossed in there. you have to have a recent Cleared "Negative" report in the mix.
I thought about competing but im not too sure they even care if anyone has it or not anymore. they want that money.
Just like when people competed with skin infection and figure that they could stay under the radar just to be a world champion. Getting a Championship means MORE to some people than others health.

Not true. "Every athlete is eligible to bring ONE coach or companion; no other spectators will be allowed. They must enter the venue with the competitor."

Yeah, it says "coach or companion" NOT spectators

From the IBJJF instagram comments there are some Brazilians complaining about not being able to travel from Brazil to the US. Could be an interesting batch of champs/medalists for this pans.

If the companions aren't competing, they are spectators.

Completely mad. I can only assume the IBJJF are feeling too much of a chomp on their profits, this seems like a totally crazy time to hold a huge competition with thousands of people mixing from all over the country.

Yeah it is in fact kind of weird to hold a Panamerican championship when borders are closed :D

I'm perplexed by this. Does anyone know how many people actually work at the IBJJF?

I won't speculate about the infection potential of the event, but organizing any kind of international competitions at this time will dilute their prestige. There are a ton people who can't or won't enter.

"I'm a BJJ World Champion."
"Which year?"
"2020...."
Pfffft.... :D

The Finnish federation (non-IBJJF) is actually going ahead with the Nationals next weekend. We have about 1/3 drop in participants vs. previous year. We've got a different situation from USA however: all gyms have been operating since July or earlier (most started June, a few last ones beginning of August). I have not heard of any problems related to covid & training. Zero patients in intensive care in Finland atm.

No testing required to enter (but Finland has fucked up with the testing capacity; if this was a requirement it would be impossible to have the competition) but same spectator number restriction as Pans (one person can come with a competitor).

Pans really gonna be a much smaller tournament. I recall the days of adult blue and purple belt divisions having over 100 competitors in a bracket. Shit I even recall the days when Pans was blue belt and up!

I don't think that there is any precautions you can take to stop what is going on.

You can take every precaution possible and still get it and your immune system/blood type may not respond well.
Or maybe you take zero precautions and get it and it doesn't effect you at all.

I think the best prevention comes on an individual basis of improving your own individual health and immune system so that your body can function more efficiently to fight off anything that comes at it as nature intended. Time will allow our bodies to adapt. And yes the strong and lucky will survive. No amount of technology in our lifetimes is going to conquer nature itself and how the world around us interacts with us and how we have survived as a species.

The real question is...how long do people want to choose to live in fear. The long-term side effects of choosing to live in fear will have more consequences. Fear itself is also a sickness of it's own destructive properties.

To be honest, this is reason enough to not to bother with a tournament. I already normally have to complete in different age or weight classes just to have enough people to be worth taking the trip (most people my age are normally a good deal heavier than I am and I hate "participation" medals). If there's so few people I probably will get a medal even if I lose everything, I tend not to bother.

I personally wish there was a minimum of 8 people per division so in order to get a 3rd place medal you would have to at least have a winning record going 2-1. This would feel more like an accomplishment and some sort of standard.

Even if the minimum was 4 people you would have to at least win 1 match and go 1-1 to get a 3rd place medal. Even that would be something. But 8 would be better.

2 and 3 person divisions are just dumb.

I don't know... it depends.

E.g. sometimes ABSOLUTE in a grappling tournament category has only 3-4 people stepping up. It's NOT MY FAULT if I'm one of the 3 that all the heavyweights didn't step up / didn't care and even if I lose both of these matches I'll proudly sport that participation trophy :)

So you're going to pans in 2020?
You can safely assume i'll never be entering any IBJJF tournament. Hopefully NAGA London goes ahead in December.
