If you get Promoted , do you feel like you need a certificate or not?
I think, I don´t really need one. It´s nice to have one, but I think I know my lvl and so my coach. I orderd my certificate from Beltchecker for my personal memories.

A Friend of mine told me, to make sure I get my/a certificate. Just in case, I start at a new School and I have to legimitate my current rank.

I feel it's nice to have, especially for Black Belt promotion, but not necessary. I've never recieved one for any of my BJJ promotions.

Never cared about certifications for my earlier belts. I felt it was important for my black belt. Too many Mc dojo guys false flagging fake black belts. Our lineages are important .. I feel we are the last real martial art where our belts actually mean something...

A photo with the person that promoted you is generally better than a certificate, I find. Until there is a certificate that is universally respected: I'll get one from Beltchecker when I get my black belt, but that will be to support the site, rather than to legitimise my belt.

Understand completely. I’ve only been on this site for a few days, and I’m finding the voting system to be strange. We get verified easily enough for the identity part, but even with the pics of the promotion, copy of the certificate, and 20 other black belts present, drawing verification points out of other verified black belts seems unnecessarily slow... most profiles say they don’t verify anybody they haven’t met or trained with.
What’s the value of providing the certificate if it’s not accepted

Nahh I don't think I need one. In fact the more I train, the less I care about belts in general. They only help you keep your jacket on. The rest is up to you. :D

I've never recieved a certificate and I'm not bothered about it.
However I had the fact I didn't have a certificate shoved in my face by my previous instructor after starting my gym and promoting stripes on white belts. This is a long story of bullshit, magalamania and ego that I've partially put on another forum.
I put little stock in certificates however, I acknowledge that they are important to others and the wider community in general.

When I think about other martial Arts like Jiu Jitsu, or Karate or whatever, they pay a lot for there Belt Exam. So I Think it´s more common there to receive a certificate.

From that perspective, It´s feel more important to have a solid affiliation you can identify with. Like the BJJ Globetrotter community. I never had the feeling that I need it to be a part of the common Belt System.

No. The beauty of BJJ is that the experience/skill level is proven on the mats, not with a piece of paper.

I come from a small jiu-jitsu community (Finland) so every practitioner knows me, or if not, knows my instructor, or if not, knows at least my gym.

I have never considered that someone would dispute my rank. I don't even have any promotion photos with my instructor. I don't think it is common practice to get a certificate even for black belts in Finland. When you reach black belt, you are known within the community.

Of course things are probably different elsewhere, or if one aspires to open an academy etc., then a rank certificate could be useful, especially to have something to show to people who are not practitioners themselves.

I've received them for each of my belt promotions, but they've each stayed in a filing cabinet in my house until this Black Belt certificate. It's framed and in my office. I just stare at like "what a damn journey.."

Well that's the thing :) A piece of paper is a piece of paper. But gladly help you to get verified because e.g. in your case I think your documentation provided shows that enough people consider you up to their standard including a very respected lineage in BJJ.

And it's not slow. For black belts with good picture documentation but NO personal connections in the system it usually gets about a week or so? Especially when they are active in forums and/or are connected to a well-known lineage.

I’m seeing that now. When I first registered. I had a different expectation on how this site works.. after playing around with it now, I understand and appreciate the process... thank you kindly for your vote! I am currently setting it up for our entire association to get on board with this site. I think it’s great!

There are multiple threads and posts about how and why different people give votes differently. I personally have given some votes to get people verified but nowadays try not to do it too much (especially for lower belts) because I want to really experience their coaching and rolling style myself as much as I can to vouch for them 100% in regards them being a good coach and/or practitioner in addition to just have shown up and payed the fees for long enough because I think there's more to that :)

You hit that nail right on the head.... as I help Master Ricardo push this to all of our affiliates, I will try to guide and explain to our students the little experience I have had with this site. We are an old school competition team. Master Ricardo will keep us in our belts as long as possible so we do better in the competitions.

The guys that stick with the sport always have ragged belts no matter the color because they are battle tested

They really did not have them when I was coming up. I ended up getting my IBJJF certificates, but that was more around me being concerned I would not be allowed to register/endorse/sign off on students' memberships at some point.

I did get my "Professor's Diploma" from Relson. I consider that one special as it not a thing most people have and is more personal.

So true, certificates werent widely handed out 20 + years ago, you were presented your belt, then the whippings lol.. Before Dave 'David Terrell' called his school NorCal Fighting Alliance..Dave held a type of belt competition you were invited and competed for the belt.. I got Invited but military duty comes first.. that was early 2000's..Wish I could have made it

As the years flew by my training was for me...in all the arts/styles/systems I trained I never looked for promotion or asked for a promotion(certificate)......as I get older my ability to show vs go has changed....even though the go is still good in my opinion lol....having that piece of paper means more to some than others.. I get it... it definitely doesnt hurt to have....

I don't feel like I "need" one. GB already issues certificates at each belt level.

But, once I get to blue belt, I am willing to get one to support the site.

Never got one in any belt promotion didn’t care , cared only for the Ibjjf certificate When I got my bb. Though in time students seem to like it as memory mostly besides photos etc.

In the older days of bjj if you had a colored belt, you show up tell the whom you got your belt from and the instructor used to just call person and verify. I guess the community is much larger now and id-ing someone isn't as easy. Also, I've seen fallouts where a black belt may leave on bad or not great terms with their instructor and they get removed off some official website. Sometimes this hurts the black belt because they weren't around in the community but was known only within the school.

I'm on the fence as to how I feel about this because on one hand the instructor did promote them and even if they're on bad terms removing them could hurt that other person. On the other hand, the instructor may just want to distance themselves away from that black belt who left. It's a very grey area.

I haven’t gotten one in BJJ but I did in Japanese jujutsu. It was nice but like others have said it got put away and I’ve never seen it again. However, I do think that it should be something for black belts to give it a more formal recognition. Considering the time and effort it takes to get to that level should be formally commemorated.

I remember how I felt when the diploma for my master’s degree arrived, I image black belts have a similar feeling. It may just be a piece of paper, but every time I see it I remember all the sacrifices that went into it.

I think having a system like Beltchecker and the ability to have a verified certificate at each level is fantastic.

The IBJJF certification system is extortionate and in all fairness, offers no more verification of black belt than this site. Having the ability to show verified certification on here future-proofs certificate holders and should provide confidence to students if they are an instructor.

Some academies do give certificates , especially at black belt, but how much weight does a certificate hold if the name on the certificate isn't that of the professor/instructor that put all his/her time and efforts in to your development?

My coach at RGA is a 4 stripe purple belt, I am a white belt. I am hoping by the time that I reach purple/brown belt level that my coach will have his black belt. I would feel much more honoured to receive it from him, rather than even Roger himself coming in and presenting it to me if he only visits for a seminar once a year or so.

Although on the flip side, I suppose if there is a little speech with some recognition by the actual coach, then does it really matter who's name is on the certificate?

In BJJ I never was given a certificate and I don’t miss one. If I some day in the future I would be promoted to blackbelt, then it would be nice to have one....I see it like kind of Master Diploma, you get awarded when finishing master instruction in handcrafts for example after apprenticeship.
