Just had this happen this weekend and actually had no idea how to respond to this. First time I have seen someone try to do this and after the match he admitted he did this on purpose as a strategy in Gi matches...He literally tried to remove his Gi over 7 times...

I had an advantage with about a minute left and just got annoyed and to aggressive after a sweep and didn't finish controlling my opponent and he got a reversal while being 30 pounds heavier then me I should of just played it smart and wasn't able to reverse in time which is my own fault.

I was also being a little bit more passive then usual as it was my first match of the tournament out of 4 divisions and the official literally told me I would have all my matches back to back with no rest and not to go anywhere as these were the last divisions of the tournament so I was trying not to waste energy at the same time.

He should've gotten passivity penalties for not engaging in your guard. And the ref should've made him tie up the jacket properly after about the 2nd time it came half off.

Interesting... I've also never encountered an ultra baggy gi top used as a grip breaking strategy. :D (Not even in training.)

Was really annoying. He undid his Gi at the start of the match and I just thought he was going to try and attack some lapel choke.

I should of stopped being nice about it after the 2nd time it happened and just ankle picked him and shoulder smashed straight into his face on the 3rd time it happened until the ref stepped in to reset again. Oh well lesson learned,

That's a weird match alright, i would have assumed he should have been penalised for passivity too but honestly the ruleset isn't my strong point. Put it this way, i'm normally the guard passer and I wouldn't expect to get away with what he did. I do sometimes try a few faints, but it was clear he was just doing it whenever you got that grip.

He never should have been allowed to compete in a gi that oversized. In my opinion after I realized it was intentional, maybe the second or third time, I would have made him fix his belt and gi and warned him. After that it would have been a penalty everytime until I could disqualify him by what ever the rules state.

As a tangent, what is a good strategy for him to employ once James has that useful collar grip? It's quite hard to break (legitimately) so should the top guy just accept guard at that point and go forward? or just try the flying armbar?

honestly being a ref. I would have given him a warning after the second time, and not engaging. But honestly, i would have dealt with that as i see that was his strategy of getting away from you and stripping himself. I would have DQ'd him. Thats just me. IM not for the BS. I can see that it may happen once. I would have stopped him made him fix his uniform. but that doesn't happen ALL THE TIME.. that done purposely. So i would have ended the match and dq him.

I was just annoyed and got to aggressive with just a minute left. I could of easily just stalled him out and won by an advantage as there was no way he was going to ever pass my guard. I just didn't want to win that way. I hate winning on points and I wanted to rip his arm off with a kimura. That was what I was thinking and when I swept at the end I was a bit to aggressive instead of being smart and he was able to reverse my extra momentum and had less then a minute to escape. And was just annoyed for putting myself in that situation with just a minute left, I am normally smarter with clock management and not putting myself in a bad spot with less then a minute to work out of it.

Normally I would of looked straight away for a kimura grip of any kind to attack or sweep and if not there then slowly either got to 1/2 guard and got a lockdown type position and went for a sweep or escape but with less then a minute he was really just holding on I never felt in danger of any submission, the extra 30 pounds was a bit difficult with someone athletic but again that's my fault for putting myself in that situation I should of been smarter and played it safer.

Next time that happens after the 2nd time someone does that I will prepare myself for when on the 3rd time they do that I will just keep going until the ref pulls me off the guy.

And his profile is public on smoothcomp so I am going to be looking to see when he signs up for another tournament and place myself in his division lol

They should learn how to grip brake without running away or wristlock.

I asked the ref after and he said he had never seen anything like it before and just didn't know how to respond.

yea refs are random some of the refs are legit black belts and coaches while others act like they have never even done jiu-jitsu before.

It's a tricky grip to break though, how about if they go forward with it?

Wristlock is the only 100% guarantee ill let go and then just regrip again and ill let go as soon as i even think your going for it and try to set up a sweep while your worried about a grip.

I was specifically addressing your legs going for some type of sweep that just led him to mount.

Just a hook sweep that i had to much forward momentum and got reversed. I have done it over a 100 times in competition I was just to aggressive and the extra weight and strength helped him finish the reversal before I could counter react.

Not sure what your comment is directed at exactly, you think the sweep is bad? lol Because I can hit that sweep on most people, it was just a really bad follow up from just losing my patience. If you mean once he was already on top of me, I don't remember exactly i think i was trying to get a quick reversal trapping his elbow on the opposite side and he reacted accordingly. That was a long ass day where I was there until 8pm.

And sometimes man when something happens that you don't expect you don't respond as fast as you should to the next thing that happens right after. So instead of losing 1 battle you might lose 2 or 3. Shit happens.
