Posted this in another thread, but this guy deserves to be named.

Georges Meulenyser, currently a black belt under GFT, is lying about his promotion history. This raises serious concerns about the validity of him as an instructor / practicioner.

I am open to hear Georges explain himself.

In the meantime, the downvote button works.

I highly recommend the people who cast their "OSS SEEMZ LEGIT"-vote to reconsider...

So where does this leave his students? if he is a fraud, in your opinions, does this also negate all their promotions that he has given as well?

He currently has 11 students registered with 4 claiming he promoted them.

I honestly have no idea...

This is up to the community to decide.

I'm seriously amazed that people do this in BJJ.....

So this is essentially self-promoting oneself to all the color belts.

I'm a 9-year purple belt from what is pretty much an old school competition team, and I often have self-doubt about "owning my rank". If anything, I secretly wish I could put on a belt one rank lower whenever I visit a tough gym for some occasional porrada. :D

The sad & complex thing about the case is that he has convinced a respected instructor to award him the black belt. Which now appears to be a straight from white to black promotion, which I guess could be legit osss in very special circumstances. BUT seems like he has been blatantly lying about his promotion & training history to his instructor. Pathetic. If the instructor would know that he has been led astray, would he stand behind the promotion? Kind of sloppy to not check on these matters. An embarrassing situation to all.

Everyone posts legit. When they havent even met the person. There are people on here with 1000s of varifications. Someone did it to me, I asked them to remove it. And they down voted me. Admin noticed and commented that they might have down voted wrong.
Anyway.... Stop varifying people you dont personally know.

This has been discussed to death and that's not exclusively how the verification process is supposed to work...

However, a profile with no promoter named for any of the colored belt promotions perhaps shouldn't have votes with comments like:
"complete promotion history"
"Documented proof of promotions"
"Good documentation"
"his promotion history looks legit"
"Belt history looks legit..."
"History documented"
..... :D

This site does not technically verify anyones rank at all. Only their instructor can do that.

So.. the facts in the case of G. Meulenyser appear to be that he's been teaching BJJ for a long time (what I gathered from one of his ex-student's profile on here, from the early 2000s) and runs a GFTeam (!) affiliated gym where he is the head coach.

Yet it seems likely that nobody has ever given him even a blue belt, or at least he cannot credit a person who will admit doing so. And same goes for purple & brown. Incredible. :)

He probably knows a little something if he's been at it for almost 20 years, but why hasn't anybody been promoting him?

This is actually more interesting than the "Italian drama", where I believe the black belt questioned was confronted about lacking skill & mat time to warrant the belt, but was proven to be promoted by a senior black belt in a position to do so, for each of his belts....

Be like yep that's a white belt.

I have thought it's a nice gesture to verify my own whitebelt students. Could be the same between friends/mat aquaintants - you acknowledge that you have rolled with that person and they're OK in your books.

Anyway to the current matter - there is a likelyhood that something shady is afoot and it needs to be talked about. Bringing it out to the open and disputing the account until it has resolved (or not) is a good solution IMO.

Who'll contact the BB who awarded the BB?

so what does the guy say who promoted him to BB? and i see kenny on there, could he actually roll Kenny?
So Jorgen messaged me a few months back to ask about Georges, his history and my connection to him. Here's part of my reply to him with some added details...
First off, he's never been a student under me, let's get that clear and out of the way. He's been under Brasa Belgium for many years before switching to GFT last year. I've know him for about 5 years now and he was already a brown belt when i met him. He runs his own little school in Liege, Belgium and i also gave a couple of seminars there a few years ago. He also came to my school and other Brasa schools when Felipe Costa visited. So i rolled with him on those few occasions. The rolls with him were ok level. Not bonecrushing good, but also not bad for a brown belt. I've rolled with much worse people during my 15 years in BJJ...
He got his black belt from Mathias Jardin from GFT a while back, also a legit instructor from France. So, yes, i voted positive on his black belt, as i didn't feel the need to question Mathias decision. If there was belt fuckery afoot, i have no idea about that, since it would have happened before i met him.

I will go and retract that vote now, until this is solved...

And this all leads to the much debated (also in Beltchecker) connection between belts and "character" - the dude could well meet most people's skill-related (coaching and age-corrected performance) criteria for now.

However not being open and honest about your personal BJJ journey may it have some kerfuffles or not... I'd think twice before recommending a school with such a teacher to anyone.

Hey.... just skimming through all this
... Are we meant to only verify those we personally know....? I have been looking at profiles, and if there is lots of evidence to warrant a vote, I have given a vote.... This all came about for me as I had verified grapplers voting for me.... and I thought I would do the same etc..... giving credit where credit was due....

It's a personal choice on who you'd like to vote to verify. I still vote for people that have a complete promotion history with photo evidence. I also look at their social media and their gyms if linked. One of the great things about Beltchecker is that you can withdraw your vote if the person ends up being a fraud.

You can vote for whoever you like. The BJJ Police will be the only ones with an issue. Lol
I vote however I want to vote as these votes really don't mean anything towards anyone's promotion or lack thereof.

I’d ask them to consider being re evaluated by a qualified instructor for their own sake to make sure they are not wasting their time training somewhere that might not be offering them “OSS LEGIT” training =)
