So when I started back in the late 90s, finding videos online really wasn’t a thing. So I accumulated numerous books throughout the years. For you younger folks, I had to actually go to a bookstore, as there wasn’t Amazon either!
I vaguely recall my first book, but I picked it up at a NAGA from somebody. It was written by a blue belt at the time and just was an instructional. I can picture the guy but can’t put a name to him right now.
Then anytime an instructional book came out I was all over it! I have all of Royce/Royler/Carlson (our group picture is in that one, and it was photographed at our school)/Renzo/Fedor/Penn/10th Planet.
For reading I have the fighters mind/Rouseys/Penn/Globetrotters/Gracie way (love this one), lions den, etc.
Any other recommendations?

Side note that both those pics were taken right side up. No idea why they posted sideways?

I have many of those same books. One that I have that I can't remember the name of offhand was by a guy called Montanha or something like that.
American guy out in the Bay Area under Ralph or Cesar Gracie. Either way it was my go to when I was a blue belt and I still look at it once in awhile. I used to lend it to folks but they would take forever to return it. I also like the Judo Masterclass series of books. One called Osaekomi by Katsuhiko Kashiwazaki and the other was Armlocks by Neil Harris. Great books

haha in bjj we have givers and takers.. way too many takers out there. I like to think I am a giver. I don't expect anything in return.
It just feels good.

This is probably my favorite book on grappling, I believe it's from 1920-something, gotta go find it to check

This makes me think of all the kid peligro books of the early 2000’s. Those were the first bjj instructional books I found. Before that it was so hard to find anything. It’s crazy to think how hard it was to see techniques back than and how easy it is these days.

Cool! Like I said in the gi thread, I used to be a BJJ journalist so got sent lots of things for review, including books. I also like collecting them anyway, so I have loads. My main interest is history, both BJJ and MMA, but older instructional books are interesting too.
E.g., like the very early one from Ralph and Cesar, or what I think is the earliest BJJ instructional published outside of Brazil (there might be others), by the rather dodgy 'Master Paul Fiorini' (better known as Paul Viele, infamous on the Underground, but also the guy who ran/runs World Martial Arts which sold some excellent DVD sets, from guys like Saulo and Ryan Hall).
I would love to get my hands on some of the super old school ones, from back in the 40s in Brazil, though I guess as my Portuguese isn't good enough, should work on that more first. ;)

"Paul Viele, infamous on the Underground"
Yes World Martial Arts dvds were the go to source for a long time.
I got the Ralph and Cesar book because I was going overseas and there was only Judo in the Azores at the time.
It's funny how now there are sources everywhere. Even on Amazon.com. haha
I remember the Renzo Gracie / Craig Kukuk vhs tapes were being copied and passed around like it was the holy grail.
