Hey All,

So I wanted to ask your opinions, feelings on this. I am a direct lineage of Helio and Royce Gracie (through Jon Burke), and as such, when I was promoted to black belt, I had to wear the white patch for two years, then two years of the red patch, now I have my "professor bars", and eventually I will earn my degree stripes. All the IBJJF black belts immediately get promoted to black belt with the red patch, and then start the "3 years later first stripe, another three years second stripe" promotion schedule. According to this, by my 6th year of being a blackbelt this December 2020, I'll still yet to have earned any "degree stripes" on my belt, but some of my friends who were promoted around the same time in 2014, or even a year or so afterwards, will already be a higher ranked black belt before me. Now, truthfully, I don't care, I am a black belt, compete as one still, teach and coach, yada yada, however I want to know if 1) Any of you had the white patch on your black belt for two years, 2) Those who did, did you care about the fact that non white patch black belts are already higher ranked than you, 3) Are you a fan of the white patch? Do you think that it should be standard practice for all the black belts (IBJJF included), and not just the Rorian, Royce, Caique, and other old school lineage instructors lines of students.

Let me know what your take is.

I've never seen a belt with the white patch in Finland.

I thought it was just a way to differ between "competitor" and "instructor" black belts, that some like to use.

Everybody gets the black belt with the red patch here, and pretty much follow the IBJJF time on grade system with the BB degrees (although, majority gets them from their instructor, not by "time served" automata/IBJJF). Some head coaches like to put the "professor bars" on the red patch, but I think that is also purely out of personal preference. We are pretty loose here generally with stuff like this.

Most black belts here, especially if they are a head coach of a gym, care about reaching the 2nd degree, because that means they can promote BBs of their own. In that sense it would suck to have extra years added to getting to 2nd grau with additional phases such as the white patch and the prof. bars.

I've always liked the red patch with the white professor bars. And I've taught at my academy for 15+ years now so I think I've earned it. I wouldn't go against the general consensus and award myself a gold belt with purple and neon stripes (which would be awesome) but I think the majority of the BJJ community would be OK with me wearing a red patch with white edges so I will :)

I also know the white bar as the "competitor" bar.

In the old school Gracie Academy, the white patch was a "practitioner", the red patch meant "instructor", and the white bars at the end meant "professor". The "practitioner" status was meant for active fighters, or black belts who had the skill set of a black belt, but weren't qualified instructors (didn't know how to teach the techniques).

Valente Bros do the white patch.
Gracie Humaita doesn't do it.
We get the red bar and follow the IBJJF guidelines.
Did you test for Black Belt at Valente's?
I know some Royce Gracie Black Belts that have and heard it's pretty tough.

I didn't get the white bar, and still haven't got a belt with the professor bars, though I've been a black belt and instructor for over ten years. I can, on the other hand sympathize with you about the delay of getting your stripes, because I haven't got any yet. To be honest I don't care about the stripes, I just wish I could sign off on any of my students I choose to promote to black belt, but I can't. I have the time in, I just didn't pay my yearly fees to IBJJF. I contacted them last year to see if there was a way to get the stripes and they responded that I only payed my yearly dues two of the nine years (at the time) that I had been a black belt, so I technically only had two years of credit. So, I guess if I pay for it I could technically get my first stripe this year. LOL

The white patch (or rank bar) is just an option for a 'competitor' to wear. It is not higher or lower ranked than the red ranking bar. I have both, I wear the black belt with the white patch when I compete, and the black belt with red ranking bar and white professor stripes the rest of the time. All schools are different though but the standard is 1st degree comes after 3 years.

No I didn't, those tests are mega hard, I've known multiple guys who have failed them (I won't tell their stories, but I'll say that the fail reasons were bullshit). I personally am not a fan of the Valente's and how they act (like they're closer to Helio than his own kids are), so I won't support their BS.

I had a choice, to go test and officially be a "Royce Gracie black belt" (getting that blue patch they have now), or be a black belt under my coach Jon Burke (who is one of Royce's first black belts, with Hawk, Rob, and Greg).... I chose my coach to be one of his first black belts (even though I trained with Royce a bunch, and go to his gatherings with Jon)... Jon is and has been my day to day coach for 14 of my 20+ years of training, whereas Royce I see once or twice a year. All that said, in the IBJJF, I'm under Team Royce Gracie, and Royce signs all my paperwork since Jon isn't affiliated with the IBJJF, so in a roundabout way, I'm still considered a Royce black belt..... Because Jiu Jitsu

See with Royce, the Old School Gracie Academy (and today with Rorion, Ryron, Rener), Caique, the Valente's.... It's two years Black belt with a White patch, two years Red Patch, Professor bars for... Actually that I don't know for how long.... And then degree stripes start.... Like I mentioned in my case, I'm going on 6 years of being a black belt this December, and I just have up to my professor bars, with no stripes.

I know some IBJJF fighters are using the white patch these days to signify that they are "fighters". I guess, I'm saying that it doesn't bother me about the stripes, I just wonder if you all think (especially my fellow black belts) if everyone should do the old school Gracie Academy way with the 2 year white patch, 2 year red, professor bars, etc, OR do the IBJJF automatic red patch, then 3 year first stripe, 3 years later second stripe thing.

This made me laugh cause I said the same thing last time they were at our annual team meeting in San Diego. So true.

Yeah, I've heard a lot of odd stories about the Valente Bros in Miami. Are they still doing the short sleeved gi thing, which again was them trying to be more Helio than Helio, IIRC? Though saying that, I also like wearing short gi trousers, but that's because I'm vain and want to show off tattoos. :P

Yeah their Gi's have shorter sleeves. In their Academy only their Gi's are permitted unless you are someone of note in the BJJ world.

My friend Roy Marsh (Royce Gracie blackbelt) had the white bar on the blackbelt too. Later then a blue bar ( Royce Gracie lineages do this, like Eli Knight, too, instead of the red bar).
I heard of people getting a straight plain blackbelt after brown first, for example from Jean Jaques Machado. Some, like Roger Gracie, wore a plain blackbelt without any bar or stripes back then in competition....

I like the idea of different color bars signifying different types of black belts. A hobbyist like me will never compete at a super high level, or have the depth and breadth of technique as my instructor, but I know what I know and can show it on the mats. I don't want to compete anymore and I don't love teaching. My black belt (should I get one) would/should be different than competitors or professors.

I think it makes sense, if there is a formal instructor training program. If white bar means "non-instructor" and red means "instructor", then there should be a formal process to get from white to red. Some academies have this. If some academies just automatically advance you from non-instructor to instructor due to time in grade, I am not sure that really adds value. If you haven't learned to instruct before, then you won't just magically learn to become an instructor later.

To my knowledge, at least here in SoCal, the only people who wore the white patch for 2 years were the Royce black belts. Everyone else either wore it with the red bar or without a bar depending on the belt you bought. For many years, if you bought a "bjj black belt" it came with a standard with a red bar. If you got a "regular black belt" it wouldn't have a bar so it was mostly up to the person and what belt they bought. One brand to note is the Ouano belts - they had the red bar on purple and brown belts for affiliates that weren't black belts but were running their own academies ( they may have had it for blue but I don't recall ever seeing one). This was back in the early 2000s. Someone should ping John Ouano to chime in, I'm sure he's got some stories!

I want to say, maybe, in the past 10years did the white bar start becoming more prevalent and even IBJJF requires you to wear a belt with either a white or red bar. My years could be off, I'm old and losing track of time.

I've also seen a few brown belts with the red bar in Scandinavia, for head coaches of a school that are not black belts yet.

This Happens in purple as well. Espesially way back when you may have a country with no black belts at all.

I accidentally posted something about this more recently. I’m in the same Royce Gracie lineage but under Rob Kahn and we follow the same white patch -> red patch -> prof bars. I kinda wish the site would add those so that I could accurately represent, when I get there.

I was awarded my black belt with a white patch. I wore it for 2 years. To be honest, it didn't bother me one bit. People I knew being awarded their black belts with red patches, from their instructors. That's their jiu jitsu journey. I have mine. If they get their degrees faster than me, so be it.

Like you, my lineage is Helio and Royce. My professor is Rob Kahn and he was among Royce's first group of black belts as well. I've trusted Rob to teach me jiu jitsu all these years, so I trust his judgement in sticking with the same system he went through. I believe it's supposed to be 2 years white patch before earning your red patch. Then 4 years with the red patch before earning your "professor bars." I know Rob stressed that a person needed to hold a black belt for 6 years in order to be able to promote a black belt, hence the "professor bars" at the 6 year mark. He said he was tired of the same things you pointed out. That people who received their black belts 10 years after him were now outranking him.

He surprised a few of us last year. I was awarded my red patch, and in addition to that he gave me my professor bars as well. It doesn't affect the minimum required time of 6 years to promote a black belt though. He just wanted us to be recognized as professors. I was extremely happy to receive it, but I would've be just as happy if all I got was my red patch.

And I have heard of the stories you mention of the testing at the valente bros.....They don't like Rob lol

I've know Rob for YEARS, I've got a ton of great Hobby K stories. The whole GT family are my people, Matt, Broc, Dan Martinez, Luis and Erin, Billy Q, Spence... All great people. Baron from our gym hits the pro training there sometimes, and back when Ryan Keenan was fighting MMA, Rob and Matt use to help our coach Jon Burke corner him. I remember Rob YEARS ago on Facebook doing a post blasting all these guys who got there Black Belts like 12 minutes ago, already outranking him, and how he said that the GT Purple Belts would dust them up. Oh the Valente's.... What could be said about them that hasn't already been said about them LOL
