Saw this posted on Facebook today and honestly thought most of it is pretty silly. What do you think?
****
Every gym has some unspoken mat rules. Those rules usually are not enforced but learned through observation and some may vary. Here are some of them:
1. Shake the hands of the black belts when you enter and when you leave the mat.
2. If a higher belt invites you to roll, you roll. They will invite you politely, if you say no they might not ask you again (except on special situations such as injuries, necessary rest for competition and others).
3. If a black belt is rolling near you, stop and move. If you are a black belt and you have a stable postion and the lower belts around you are scrambling or with a submission locked in, don't be a tyrant, be humble, you move.
4. Be stoic. If you get a submission, don't celebrate, don't show any joy. If you are submited, don't show frustration, shake hands and restart.
5. If the pain is tolerable don't stop. Don't talk to your partner about it, don't expect them to say they are sorry, most of the times they didn't even realized what happened. Keep it to yourself.
6. No excuses, a tap is a tap, crank or no crank. Don't waste time massaging your ego explaining why you tapped, focus on what you should had done instead.
7. During the explanation of a position be attentive, listen carefuly. Don't expect the full attention of your professor if you didn't gave him any.
8. Payback rule, whatever you do, it will be done to you. If you are rough we will be rough on you. If you take time to teach others we will take our time to teach you. If you dedicate yourself to Jiu-Jitsu we will dedicate ourselves to you.

1. Nope
2. Nope
3. Never though of it that way. Always asked people to try to stay on one place and not go from one side of the mat to the other like wildcats and always try to be alert, move or warn if someone is coming dangerously close in order to avoid injury, usually I expected the more experienced guys to be more alert and give example.
4. Try to be in general... though I have seen some crazy ego bursts after a sub, fortunately rarely.
On the rest I agree on some To a certain degree, on others not so much especially 8. Sounds bit crazy as general rule it happens but I think the way he puts it is kinda too much. When a guy goes too rough, I try go as slow and gentle as possible to show that there is another way, in my experience that works, after, they usually ask to roll again Next time and the Fury is way down and they try to learn instead going to beast mode all the time.
On the 7 I agree a lot, it’s one of the things that annoys me. Agree on 6, about 5. If you are hurt don’t roll or inform from start of class and coach can find a partner to roll with and be careful usually experienced.

Silly. Our gym and most of Finland/Scandinavia is very loose with these things anyway. We have no bowing, ever, black belts are called by their first names just like everyone else, and only time we line up by rank is when the head coach gives a speech after giving out a belt or something.
Just don't be a dick, don't smell bad, don't crank subs, ask if you don't know something, and you're good! :)
Of course whenever I visit a new gym somewhere else, I try to be mindful or observant if they have any of this stuff in effect.
1. Generally no. I do it with some black belts that I know like it, but it's mainly because we're friends and happy to see each other.
2. Personally I tend to respect this "rule", even if it's a lower belt who asks (in case I was thinking about sitting out a round for no other reason than feeling tired). Nobody asks you twice though, and it's okay to decline.
3. Depends. When visiting, I'm very mindful of this. (And I know some upper belts who get annoyed when this is not respected.) But personally I think it should be more context-based: the pair who can make way more easily should do it. If you're just rolling for fun, you make way for the guys who are sparring for a competition. Always be sure you don't roll into smaller people. And basically, the more advanced practitioners tend to get in more complex entanglements, so it's often better to let them play it out and others move out of their way.
4. Haha. Be whatever the fuck you are. The more you show joy in training, the better. Some people are emotional and that's okay. Very rarely these enter the realm of unacceptable. Personally I prefer zero celebration after a win in competition, but that's my choice. (Or is it..? Perhaps I'm just Finnish and thus unable to express feelings.)
5. A completely ridiculous statement. If your partner is not realizing that he is causing you pain by something, of course you should talk to them about it, so they can better utilize it to cause pain more effectively in the future!
6. "It was more of a crank!!" has been a long-running joke among those who have trained a bit more, so we cry it to friends even when it was a clean strangle. :) Anyway based on how this is brought up these days, I think it seems that people are more sensitive about being let know that they got the tap due a crank, than people are actually sensitive about getting cracked. Personally I'm always interested by which mechanics I got the tap. Also whenever we roll no-gi, it's neck crank time so no big deal.
7. This is not an "unspoken rule". If you talk/fuck around during instruction, you will be put into your place.
8. "Payback rule", what the fuck. :D Shit like this gets people hurt. If I roll with a spaz, I don't try to out-spaz them, but instead control them as calmly as possible. And the "Golden Rule" of treating others as you would like others to treat you is not some secret jiu-jitsu dojo code, that's plainly a good way to live one's life.

Why not shake everyone's hand?
I hate when people call me "professor". I tell them to call me Dave. They still won't and that is their choice whether I like it or not.
Black belt doesn't make anyone an authority on everything in life or anything at all for that matter since bjj is constantly evolving.
I've had people ask me for advice on things that surprise me.
I always tell them to seek out someone who is an expert on the subject (marriage, finances and other weird shit).

1. Not for me or the other in-house black belts on the mat but I would ask people to do it if there is a visiting black belt, in sign of respetch.
2. No.
3. Higher belt has right of way, and this could just be a blue belt over a white belt. Just a simple rule to manage the traffic on the mat.
4. 5. 6. I guess the gym environment is just different at ours. I just care that you don't celebrate a tap like if you won over a guy with whom you had personal issues. We joke a lot and we mock each other a lot. The other day I stopped the class so that everybody could clap their hands for a submission from a guy who normally play extremely defensive (goddammit Priit!)
7. Yes.
8. More than payback, I'd call it education. If you spaz, I'll make sure that you have no room for spazzing. Or breathing. If you roll like your partner insulted your mother, I'll line up proper sparring partners. I think it's normal in every combat sport gym.

Why not shake everyone's hand?
Shaking hands with black belts is MANDATORY, any lower ranked person is OPTIONAL :D

I make a point of walking around before class to greet everyone personally with a hand shake and the old pat on the chest or shoulder.
I agree with Francesco, visiting black belts get the VIP treatment and all my students will go out of their way to greet them.
Making people feel good and welcome before you simulate murder is always the decent thing to do.

Just making sure I got this right... So for a plain black belt a "single shake" will do, then you add a shake per each stripe they have, correct?

1. Happy to shake anyones hand if we are in proximity but i'm not doing a flipping lap of the room for it
2. Fuck off
3. I try to do this regardless of who it is, i don't have a problem with the basic principle that a high belt roll is more important
4. Agree in principle, unless it's a rare submission in which case you should do a lap of the room
5. I'm British, we like complaining, you can't take that from me

Yeah, saw that on reddit. Almost entirely stupid, IMO.
>>>Shake the hands of the black belts when you enter and when you leave the mat.<<<
Maaaaaybe not right now.
>>>If a higher belt invites you to roll, you roll. They will invite you politely, if you say no they might not ask you again (except on special situations such as injuries, necessary rest for competition and others).<<<
Disagree. You don't have to roll with anybody you don't want to, regardless of their belt level.
>>>If a black belt is rolling near you, stop and move. If you are a black belt and you have a stable postion and the lower belts around you are scrambling or with a submission locked in, don't be a tyrant, be humble, you move.<<<
It doesn't matter about belt level: everybody should be aware of their space and move when necessary.
>>>Be stoic. If you get a submission, don't celebrate, don't show any joy. If you are submitted, don't show frustration, shake hands and restart.<<<
Yeah, this one I do agree with.
>>>If the pain is tolerable don't stop. Don't talk to your partner about it, don't expect them to say they are sorry, most of the times they didn't even realized what happened. Keep it to yourself.<<<
Disagree. Pain is your body telling you "ok, you need to do something about this or bad things will happen", not something you should be 'tolerating'.
>>>No excuses, a tap is a tap, crank or no crank. Don't waste time massaging your ego explaining why you tapped, focus on what you should had done instead.<<<
Disagree, partly. Cranks are not allowed in my gym, but yeah, it is good to try and detach your ego from tapping (though it's not easy).
>>>During the explanation of a position be attentive, listen carefully. Don't expect the full attention of your professor if you didn't gave him any.<<<
I certainly appreciate it when people pay full attention, but yeah, it's part of my job to check everybody understands. Sometimes that will include people who didn't pay attention properly the first time round.
>>>Payback rule, whatever you do, it will be done to you. If you are rough we will be rough on you. If you take time to teach others we will take our time to teach you. If you dedicate yourself to Jiu-Jitsu we will dedicate ourselves to you.<<<
Disagree. If somebody is being rough, being rough back is only going to escalate the situation. Don't match force with force, de-escalate and defuse instead. If somebody continues to go nuts, stop.

We have many blackbelts and a bunch of brown belts but we make space for everyone. If two white belts fight for their life’s we make room for them if higher ranked guys go for it we make room. I think respect is good for all. I like the vibe at our gym, we fancy fighting and if you want to go for it, go !
Sometimes we all step aside and watch a war. That’s nice. We are not only technical nerds they are quiet a few warriors on the mats and they get space when needed.
I think it’s so weird when only higher belts challenge lower belts.
I look into your face and ask : let’s roll. If you ignore me I think you are a retard with social issues. Just say no and roll with someone you like but don’t act up like I’m not worthy. I’ll give you a run for your money anyway.

I always ask for feedback after any kind of strangle on anyone about what it felt like - I want to know if they had a sore neck and tapped because of potential crank or (and that's what I always aim for) clean choke where they felt pressure and going out.
(NB! The following sentence is highly BJJ-context-specific, please don't quote me without additional clarifications)
I find it almost impossible to cleanly strangle some women though.
If they have rather thin necks, the area for "clean chokes", the area between trachea and sternocleidomastoid muscle is just too small.
