Guys,
I wanted to get your take on something. You know I have been writing some short articles on lesser known, historical figures in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. If I made T-Shirts of people like Jacyntho Ferro or Donato Pires, do you think people would buy them?

I think there is a market for everything in BJJ. If it resonates with them they will buy it.
Are you planning on having verbiage on them or just an image?
Your design will be important. The "cooler" it looks the more chances people will make the purchase.
Will they be selling online or only locally (academy) or tournament concession stands. (maybe partner with Fighters Market)
Is online buying an option? How convenient will it be to purchase and have them shipped. (related costs)
There are so many things that will affect your sales.
Either way I hope it works out and you sell tons of them.
Cheers!

It would have to be online, but I am not sure the average practitioner knows or cares about the first generation. That is my concern.

You could always make one and wear it around and see how people react to it.
I think it will be well received. Just look at all the new and past books that came out about bjj. Like the Carlos Gracie book and the new one by Drysdale.
There is definitely some interest in the origins and first generation of jiu jitsu pioneers in Brazil.

I would (design dependent), and so would other bjj nerds ... but not sure how lucrative that is.

Agreed. I know a lot of people who like to buy any clothing that has anything to do with BJJ, so there's likely a market.

You might be surprised: a lot of people have read Choque now, so there is probably enough interest. Bit of a niche market though, as it's a niche within a niche within a niche: BJJ people who are aware of the pioneers who also like BJJ-themed t-shirts.

A couple of draft designs. Works in progress. Thoughts?
Definitely the first one for me, far more graphically interesting. The other one is basically just a big photo on a t-shirt, which personally I don't find very exciting.

I think this is the final one. I am calling the series of shirts A Velha Guarda (the old guard). What do you think?

Looks good to me! If I ever customise one of my gis with a "BJJ history" theme, I'd buy one of those for sure to turn it into a patch (I often use t-shirts for patches: chop out the bit I want, fold over the edges, then sew it on. Tip I learned from Christian's old Shogun HQ years ago).

I like to have themes for each of my gi customisations (e.g., Studio Ghibli, Favourite Music, Other Worlds, etc). ;)

Super cool. I dig it. Once you sell, I'd buy one.

My first thought was to add some sort of year under the name. Otherwise I wouldn't know if this is just your current professor from next town over or it's a legend from 100 years ago :D

Thanks again for the support, guys.

Christian,
Yes, I thought the same thing as well, but ran into an issue.

1. I was going to put "Established 19XX", but I felt that may seem like he was running his own academy or broke off from Maeda. It appears that while Ferro was the main instructor at Maeda's academy that he did not branch off and do his own thing.

2. I thought about doing his birth and death years, but I have only found the date of death, not his birth.

3. I guess I could put the year he started training and the year of his death? But he really was not teaching when he started. I could put the year he received rank from Maeda and his death date, but it is not clear how senior that rank was or when exactly he started teaching.

I am open to ideas. Let me know if you guys have any other thoughts.

Josh

Hmm. I guess you could put the decade he started training? E.g., in the same way that people will talk about 1990s BJJ, which conjures up some specific styles and grapplers.

Or for branding purposes call it "Old Old OLD School Jiu-Jitsu" or something like that

What if you put the year he was awarded rank (eg 1935) and then put "since 1935"

Understood. I just was concerned that it was implying he separated from Maeda and his academy; which he did not. It is also not clear what exactly that rank meant and how it related to his instruction.

I'd say these are valid concerns when writing an article or a book, but on a piece of clothing, not such a big deal IMO.

Printing order is in for the first three designs (Ferro, Omori and Pires). Should have in stock in the next couple of weeks. Will keep you guys posted. If these sell, I will do some more.

Thanks again for your support.

Joe,
I definitely can. I have about a half a dozen other designs I want to do, but I want to make sure these sell first.
