La gente,

I was asked to teach two short classes at my kids' primary school. Parents got invited to do a little show & tell about particular skills they might have. Me and another dad (who's a blue belt! ) will try not to embarrass ourselves.

I have my own ideas, but I'd like to hear yours.

Class 1 is for kindergarten age (4 to 6)
Class 2 is for mid grade age (8-10)

There have proper judo mats at the school.

The kids most likely know next to NOTHING about bjj.

What would you teach?

I was thinking about a super basic assortment of rough & tumble games, rolling, crawling, wrestling with a beach ball, or backhold, etc, but I could use some input...

Much obliged.

Wrestling. King of the mountain takedowns.

We do a game where we put wrestling bands on each kids ankle and whoever rips their opponents band off first wins. It’s wild the natural transitions it creates.

Nice. Is that drill called King of the Mountain?

I was also thinking about something with hats. Guard player wears hat, passer needs to steal hat.

I'd teach basic breakfalls first then rolling etc. I always explain that I slip when it's snowy out and this protects my brain.

King of the Mountain is a great game, putting a flag on the belt loop or back is another good one. We call that one Fox Tail (Grab the fox by it's tail). As long as they know how to fall they are good to go in my opinion. Plus parents love that the kids learn something immediately that can be used without more classes (good selling point ;) )

When I do teach kids I teach them something they can use today. I know alot of folks (long time practitioners) don't like these things but that's ok. The kids like it and its about them.
A few examples that I run through:
Breakfall, up in base, aggressive wrist grab with pull escape (like a drunk guy at a club grabbing a girls wrist), clinch off punch, ouchi or kouchi gari, basic mount escape, headlock escape both standing and on the ground.
They eat that shit up because it's empowering.
Like I said, I know it's not to everyone's liking but bjj is still very much a martial art and I like it that way.

At the end hit em with the Wim Hof Breathing while you spark up a blunt. Lol

I teach kids class twice a week..

We always start out by teaching breakefalls and basic takedowns (double leg/single leg)

Also like to do basic animal movements for warm up (bear, shrimp, crocodile, monkey/gorilla, duck)

And sumowrestling - make a square with 4 belts and have them taking each other out of the square by pushing and turning to use the other person's leverage.

As a stand-up wrestling game my 4-6 year old group has been enjoying handfighting to try and get a waistlock (big hug) on their partner
it incorporates ideas of posture, grip breaking and 2 on 1 control
there are always some incidental takedowns so we always work breakfalls first

First find the biggest 4-6 year old and body slam em to the ground to establish authority.
Then have them do a full on KUMITE.
Winner gets to fight you Dan Bertina no holds barred.

This is a good option Dan:

Another option is to just put a Wiggles DVD on while you chat all the moms up. Lol

I made myself laugh just imagining this crazy scenario. Had a great drive laughing about it.

We have a basic 8 and up kids class. We teach one school yard self defense technique from The Helio Gracie Master Text and one position per week. We emphasize holding and or escaping the position, staying on top or sweep and get on top. The only submissions we do are cross collar choke, armbar, and rear naked choke. For warmups we shrimp, upa, rolls, breakfall, technical standup. We see who can stay up on knees riding a yoga ball to help hold mounted positions. Circled we roll the ball at random for sprawls to catch each other. We roll at the end of every class. Either slap bump and roll for a timed round or positionally. Positionally we are circled with the kids coaching each other on the escape or sweep.

Focussing on the 4-6 year old group mainly I made this list of the types of the games I play with them:
- Wrestling to mount (hold for 3 seconds)
- Back control escape (+ basic rnc or collar choke attack)
- Fit ball sprawls (in a circle coach rolls fit ball towards students)
- Break Falls (forward, backwards & side)
- Hand fight to big hug (using grips breaks, 2 on 1, etc... + waistlock takedown)
- Tail grab game
- Mount escapes (top player don't fall off)
- Standing rear waistlock escapes
- Double leg takedown (+ breakfall)
- 4 square sumo wrestling
- Basic open guard passing (control the knees and pass to opposite side + frame, make space and reclaim guard)

I'm keen to add to the list if anyone's got any good games that I missed.
I find the 4-6 year old stay more engaged with jiujitsu games vs learning specific techniques
