Hey Guys, Germany is Back to a Lockdown light.
Kind of boring know and its getting colder.
First Lockdown was ok, I was motivated but now. It feels like, getting the bluebelt and suddenly quit BJJ.
Do you guys have the same motivation problem as I am or do you still watch instructionals and train with a grappling Dummi?
In Spring, at the first Lockdown, a friend and I bought some Judomats and we drilled a lot Outside. But it is to cold now.

Same in England, a new lockdown started yesterday (it's different in Wales, Scotland and NI, each country in the UK has their own approach). Personally I'm more motivated this time, but that's from the perspective of a school owner and instructor. It feels like I can take what I learned from the first lockdown and apply it now, so I'm optimistic it will make my online offering even better.
We'll see if I'm equally optimistic should the lockdown last longer than expected (it is due to go until 2nd December in England, but I'm not confident it will actually end then).

Case count is really bad in the USA and Illinois is not doing well. Worried there will be another stay-at-home order soon. I don't know what my gym's finances look like but I really hope we can survive another lockdown.

Your gym is GB though, right? I was under the impression the GB online offering was pretty good. Although yeah, I guess that's from head office, so might not filter down sufficiently to keep smaller affiliates afloat.

You need to be able to spar with as many people as possible to truly get better after you have a fundamental/conceptual understanding of things. At least if you don't want to make progress at a snails speed.
All online stuff and any non sparring stuff does is give you ideas of focus for your real training. But without the real training of sparring the real progress is on pause and the best you can do is make a list of all the things you want to work on eventually and brain storm ideas for the future and try to map it out efficiently.
It's really important to be able to narrow down points of focus for every aspect of your game for when your sparring to be able to turn sparring into positional focused sparring during live rolls basically based upon all the online and class information you have determined you want to test out to see if it helps expand and connect the dots of your A/B game or plugs holes in your weaknesses.
You really need to be able to quickly determine what you DON'T want to work on right away as it will only get in the way and hinder your progress as you can always come back to certain bits of information later. Your mind can only store so much information at a time and keep it fresh without having the muscle memory to back it up.
For me personally what helps me improve the quickest is doing focused privates where I pick 2 to 4 things to quickly go over during an hour from certain spots and brain storm a bit of creativity on improving my strengths and reducing my weaknesses. Then I will determine if any of it was useful and then use it during live rolling and try to force what I was working on during the rolls.
The better my surrounding knowledge of what I am working on will increase the speed in which I am able to implement the new techniques/ideas/concepts. The more the spider web of information increases the easier this process becomes over time.
Some things I will work on for a few days, others a few weeks and some things take a couple months before I feel comfortable with it. The goal should be for anything that I am working on for me to actually feel comfortable doing it in a tournament scenario and then actually being able to get it to work in that scenario.
And then you repeat the process constantly when needed. The quicker your able to store information and test it out and then use it functionally in sparring and then in competition the quicker you get better at jiu-jitsu in a sense. Without the actual testing out the information, picking it apart, brain storming, being creative and trying it out in sparring and then in competition your not able to truly figure out what works and what doesn't and store the muscle memory the way it needs to be stored to then begin to work on more information repeating the process.
So in a sense gathering as much information as possible online is not that useful. Just gather a little bit of information at a time and work on just a few things at a time from different areas so you always have something to work on from every position in sparring. Then try to get good at those things and connect the dots. Then when you feel like you need more things to work on repeat.

Personally not really having a motivation problem. But then, I'm fairly obsessive about things in general, so it's not that big a deal for me.
As for training, I have been using the lockdown to focus specifically on the parts of my game I'm bad at. Dummy training is obviously no substitute for live training but it's better than nothing and it does let you get an understanding of the mechanics, so when you're in live training you can focus strictly on application and don't sit there wondering where your feet go. It also helps internalize what you wanted to take away from instructionals.
All in all, I really didn't notice any drop in my ability after the first lockdown. Wasn't better, but also not worse.
And on a side note, where do you live? I'm in NRW, and while it's cool now, it's nothing that a bit of rolling wouldn't balance out. I've rolled in colder weather than this.

Yeah, i was confused as you markered :..."wie in den anderen Bundesländern auch....Judo mit 2 Personen möglich!" Only in state Hessen then ....So in the state NRW it is definitely not allowed like mentioned in the above covid state NRW regulation.

Well, that depends where you are. In the UK, that would currently be illegal (though you could form a support bubble legally, if you can find somebody who lives alone). I'm not sure about the rest of Europe, though I imagine most if not all of the places that have also moved back into lockdown will have rules about household mixing.
In the US, also seems varied, depending where you live, but I'm not familiar with the rules over there.

To me when they say 90% effective...I just think having a good immune system is over 99% effective so what are they really saying? Are they saying they are adding a 10% chance to cause horrible side effects. That's all I am reading when I see that.

Yep, very good news! Seems like a decent sample size too, from what I've read. Though I'm sure the distribution will take a long time (starting sensibly with front line workers and vulnerable demographic being inoculated), it at least means there is a potential end point, rather than just endless months of not knowing when we can start getting back to some semblance of normal.
2021 should hopefully be a lot better than 2020, for numerous reasons. :)

It's not really that complicated. A vaccine is not intended to cure a virus, bit to keep you from getting it in the first place. So, when they say a vaccine is 90% effective, that means that 90% of people who were given the vaccine did not get infected when compared to those who did not receive it.
In this context, your claim that "a good immune system is over 99% effective" is irrelevant as the parameters being compared are those who were vaccinated vs those who were not.
Hope that clears it up.

I really don't see how they can honestly say it's 90% more effective for people compared to those who do not get the vaccine. I could maybe see that in people over 70 maybe...even then I doubt it. As once your over a certain age the percentage chance of death from any cause is already greater then .1% for a lot of people.
But the math doesn't add up to me. That is all. I think they pull these stats out of there ass like every other stat any company gives that is trying to make billions of dollars.
The world needs guinea pigs though so good for the people who believe these sorta things and want to blindly get it on day 1.

This isn't an either or situation. Getting the vaccine doesn't replace your immune system. Again, assuming that the immune system covers 99%, that would be the baseline as everyone, save those suffering from some form of autoimmune disease, has an immune system. The vaccine would be an additional layer on top.
Also, the whole point to a vaccine is to prime the immune system so it is ready for the illness. Kind of like getting the questions to a test before the exam date.
As for how they get these numbers, these are actually very robust statistical models which are used to determine this based off experiments with willing participants, normally double blinded. This is literally the furthest thing from "pulling it out of there was". Admittedly, the methodology is complicated and hard to understand, but unless you have advanced degrees in mathematics and biostatistics, why would you expect to understand them? It's a specialized field and not really common knowledge.

While a good immune system is probably more effective than a vaccine, the point of the vaccine is to help slow down the amount of people getting sick and collapsing the medical system which in turn will cause deaths from issues that normally shouldn't be deadly. Here's an example, hospitals are completely overwhelmed that doctors and you get staph from training. Doctors are so overwhelmed dealing with covid cases that you can't get an appointment and the wait time in the ER is 12hours so you don't bother. Now the staph goes septic and you die. Another thing with this virus is unknown of the long term effects of what it does to your system. Some people are asymptomatic and others are wrecked for months before they get better. The unknowns is what makes this virus scary.
Remember that weird resurgence of Kawasaki disease in New York that happened with young kids out of nowhere? There have been reports of young people dying, as well. From what I've read, a lot of this is based on exposure to the viral load. But, I'm no scientist and will continue following and reading up on it. If a mask is all we need to slow down the transmission, I'm all for it.
The percentage of effectiveness is based on the number of participants and yes, the numbers are most likely polished to make them look better and ,personally, I would to take those reports with a grain of salt. Based on their numbers it's more effective than the flu shot and similar to the chicken pox vaccination. Will I be the first to try it? Heck no. :)

I think you're confusing survival rates (i.e. most people survive after having been infected) with infection rates (i.e. the vaccine is purported to limit infections to 10% of everyone who gets vaccinated).

There is a scientific process behind these figures, and in this case this process is heavily supervised by FDA (USA), EMA (EU), etc. Science is not an opinion. Luckily we have science to come with answers like vaccines to help to manage pandemics like the one we’re having now. The study they are referring to, to come up with the 90% effectiveness rate, is in the phase 3 clinical trial and has already been tested on more then 40.000 volunteers, most scientist say it looks promising.
BTW : developing vaccines is not the best way for a pharmaceutical company to make money.
A personal observation here (so not scientific) is that regions that are less infected seem to have a higher resistance against vaccination then regions with higher infection rates. Belgium is just starting to get over the peak of it’s second (world record) infection wave, so I might be biased.
Let’s hope that the whole anti-vaccination discussion does not lead to lower vaccination rates and in the end to prolonging the pandemic ... I’m really desperate to start training again !
