In addition to your standard training gear (gi, rash guard, shorts etc) what's everybody wearing?

As for myself, here's my go-to...

Always: knee pads, finger tape (but only for gi training)
Sometimes: ankle brace, extra tape on injured joints, super diesel knee brace, mouth guard
Never: headgear (except the one time my ear blew up and I had to do damage control)

Outside of gi, belt, rashguard and spats, I think a gumshield is the only other equipment I wear for BJJ. I've used tape in the past, but rarely in the last few years because I've mostly eliminated tight grips that mash up my fingers.

So I avoid spider guard and lasso (which is a shame, I used to do those both a lot from white to early purple, but too much wear on the fingers). Using gi lapels instead, I can grab with a fist rather than pocket grips etc. That has been so much better for my fingers, along with under and overhooks, to bypass gi gripping entirely (though I do love playing with the gi, especially wrapping it over a kimura grip so my other hand is free).

Tape, mouthpiece, deodorant (a very important gear). Have been known to wear knee sleeves but its not an everyday item. And often a hoodie and maybe sweatpants for warmth when warming up.

Ooo, good point. I do always have a little thing of breath spray, that is indeed important.

I always put on peach hand cream. I'm the only woman in the class and have been told I smell much better than the men. (I have a terrible sense of smell myself.)

Yeah, my sense of smell isn't great either. Which came in handy when I looked after my niece for a few months, so my sister could go back to work: bad sense of smell + nappy changing felt like a super power. :P

What is wrong with you guys (Bridget gets a pass)? You wear a mouth guard, a knee brace and ankle tape but no cup? I’ll take a blown ACL over testicular torsion any day. As a half guard player I’d be in deep trouble without a cup

I ban cups at my gym. Horrible to have those jammed into your back in back control, plus it results in crappy armbar technique with white belts (who invariably start using it as a fulcrum).

I had a guy hit me right where boy-junk would have been a few weeks ago (and I got it on video, too! At about 3:05):

I have no opinion on the cup debate. I'm just glad that, in that moment, I wasn't a man.

If your getting hit in the junk I think it's an issue with your guard game or the guard your using.

Pretty sure The De La Riva Guard was used a lot to avoid just that.

I have never had an issue with it while using any sort of open guard or distance management guard. When your using more close distance guards you get what you get. lol

Cups are not allowed in most competitions as they can be used as a weapon.

Any sort of guard where you are not able to use your feet on your opponents hips or biceps your risking a knee. Especially them opening a close guard or smashing a 1/2 guard.

Yeah, the use of a cup as a fulcrum seems to occur invariably whenever white belts wear cups. That's pretty much my main gripe with them.

Gum, and should consider head gear I have had one ear take a beating since June.
Yeah, I keep getting bad cauliflower on my right inner ear, so I should probably start actually wearing headgear.

Imma guess you guys are getting it on the near side ear on the side you prefer to pass someone's guard?

Chewing gum, mouthpiece. Tape for when I've injured something but not bad enough to take time off training. Beyond that, there not much else I consider need to have. Been lucky to avoid permanent injuries.

All the Masters essentials: 10m of tape on my fingers, knee sleeves, mouth guard (have bit my lip/tongue bloody too many times).

"Stay-in-hair" hair band/loop with some rubber in it (that never stays in the hair anyway).

A must: compression shorts (on top of regular underwear), mostly to keep my junk in place. Used to use a cup in no-gi (rubber one with extra soft edges... don't ever do the metal Thai-style cups!) but haven't bothered lately. Receiving a proper nut shot is very rare I think.

Socks get useful in Finland for warming up during the winter months.

Gum until the start of the class and mouthguard. Tape, only if needed but I try to avoid it at all costs. Kneepads if I get those nasty zingers on it but it's been years since that happened.

Chewing gum (except when visiting other gyms) and occasionally finger tape and knee sleeve.

Interesting that quite a few people chew gum: I would have thought there's a risk you could either swallow that, or it falls out your mouth onto somebody? But clearly not, as it's more common than I realised.

Are you guys chewing gum for fresh breath, or a different reason?

Looks cool

...also forced one to breath thru the nose, which is desirable in (most) sports.

Fresh breath and also to control breathing. Helps to remain calm and steady.

Fresh breath for me. Though, I only chew it up until the start class and I spit it out.

Another trick you can do if you use a mouthpiece, soak it in mouthwash between training sessions. It keeps the mouthpiece and your breath fresh.
