I'm currently kinda out of ideas on WHAT to learn for myself in BJJ.
Like i'm developing overall understanding and developing my own game BUT I've always liked to have a small personal "project", a more narrow topic or technique I like to take into focus and understand (better).
Can be a single technique OR a bit wider "game" or set of elements.
Shoot your suggestions and the thing in reply with most thumbs up will be my personal topic for a week starting tomorrow.
P.S. Include youtube links!
P.P.S. Jokes are welcome but they don't count as submissions.
P.P.S. "Cool" stuff will have an advantage if it's a tie BUT if I seem the recommendation to be unrealistic to be a move that I can actually integrate in my game and practice, that won't count.

Join me.
One topic is postura inside (or in front of) the guard.
Other topic is ground and pound as more than "punch him in the faaaaace, elbows elbows aaaaargh".

Tornado guard . . . https://www.youtube.com/w[...]afkv4ih68c
Good suggestion... Might take that BUT I've been aware of that since it surfaced and played a little bit and I think it doesn't suit my short and stocky body type and lack of flexibility at all :D

I love this approach to developing my game, as even a seemingly flashy, impractical move/series can open doors to previously undiscovered paths of greatness. A couple years ago I decided to teach myself how to do the Imanari roll, so I drilled it consistently for about 6 weeks before it started to come more naturally. Since my takedown and passing games are already fairly solid, the Imanari roll has added a really fresh new way to keep my opponents/training partners on their toes.
Here's a video of me using the roll to snag a heel hook in the advanced division at a local tournament a couple years ago:
https://youtu.be/uzNm7Egt8w4
SUPER fun move, but I'd advise those with weak-ass takedown/passing games to get right with the Lord before folding this into their arsenal of attacks.

Too broad. I think there are different postures to do that suit different strategies and in general I wanna do what the opponent is least comfortable with :D (leaning in and pinning, sitting back back etc (if you mean closed guard). If open then I think it's too dynamic... maybe I don't get what you mean exactly.
And 2nd - sorry, no MMA topics for now - my both wrists are messed up and don't take any kind of impact very well and trying to do anything striking related currently just frustrates and makes me depressed.

Imanari roll
Another good suggestion. Fits right in because we have a theme coming up in December - it's going to be all leglocks :)
I am already fairly familiar with the move though BUT starting to actually use it more would be a good goal.
I'm in good graces (enough) with the takedown and passing gods as well I think...

Apply some weapons self-defense training. This is a captivating and entertaining video a training partner of mine just completed.
Has little to nothing to do with the 'sport' of BJJ, but can be just as challenging and fun. BTW, you may have these licked, I am not suggesting otherwise...I am just shamelessly promoting my friend's great video. It really is well done!

After Martin Aedma had his wicked way with me, my interest was sparked in the whole crab ride phenomenon. I however, have no time to delve into it.

Yes! Crab rides and rolling back takes: these are my personal pandemic side-projects. It's taking a TON of time to figure out all of the variations, but luckily I have tons of time to work on it now.

Not a bad suggestion but I'm currently quite disinterested in that side for myself.

I'm personally taking a period of thinking a little in "Out of the box" Jiu Jitsu. All the stuff that doesn't really fit into the regular sports/ground-focused training that we do most of the year. I guess it's a bit of old school / self defense training, but all in a "sports" context (no X-blocking a baseball bat to hip throw. All build around "sports-style" drilling).
I always found it strange that sometimes you'll run into people who have been grappling for a decade or more, but if there is a wall/table/different surface or you're wearing a certain type of clothes, then they're completely clueless.
- Standing distance management: Closing/breaking distance, clinch vs. someone trying to run away (and reverse), clinch vs. strikes (and reverse), cutting off opponent with obstacles
- Grappling when there are obstacles (walls, other people, objects)
- Moving people standing for the sake of moving them (like how to force a person to a certain position in the room)
- Unusual takedowns like pulling jacket/t-shirts over the head, active guard pulls when can't use wrestling, etc.
- Strikes/kicks defense/offense on the ground using cloth (gi, tshirt, hoodies, big jackets etc.)
- Attacking/defending/submitting using different types of clothes (gi, tshirt, hoodies, big jackets etc.)
- Safe grappling on different non-matted surfaces
It's really a fun way to mix up the training a little bit and people seem to enjoy it so far :) Also found that a simple "clinch vs. try to run/break away" drill is a kiiiiller workout :D

Train some judo and develop some standup and footwork ? Find what throws work best for you to get you in a dominant position and finish.

Don't really have a vid, but something I've been trying to recreate for s while was something I managed during rolling. I was playing a lapel pass in gi and somehow, and to this day I still don't know how, I managed to tie my opponent's lapel in s knot on his own leg to the point we're I could let it go and he still couldn't get it free. Really wish I had been filming that rolling session.

Two great projects/rabbit holes that I went deeply into over the last two years :
1) Keenan's Lapel Guard :
that was a long project for me, but we dutifully went over the 189 lessons spread in 16 sections over several months with my son (keeping track of progress in a spreadsheet ^^)
Lapel guard is very powerful.
I got totally dominated by a good lapel player once (Igor Tanabe, a monster, great guy) , and decided that I had to learn how to defend it; problem was that nobody at my gym plays any sort of advanced lapel, so I had to become the resident expert.
Initially learned it to learn how to defend it... ended up making it part of my game.
https://supersale.lapelguard.com/
full price is $250, expensive but worth it. there will probably be a significant sale for thanksgiving.
2) Outside Sankaku :
I thought I had developed a decent leg lock game by going thoroughly over the Danaher System (121 individual lessons, yep... another spreadsheet ^^) , then I discovered Lachlan Gile's 5050 Anthology and the Outside Sankaku, aka 90/10. *mind blown*!
80/20 to 90/10 (outside sankaku)

I have (legal :) ) access to Lapel Encoclypedia. So that's already something I tinker with.
Leglocks is always a topic, I haven't considered outside sankaku an important part, might do.
K-guard is a part of my game already since way back when (ca 2015?) :) We call it beartrap. https://www.youtube.com/w[...]cHcRWi4XGc
The "short" K-guard was something I found out about only after Lachlan's ADCC run.

Standing entries into submissions (flying armbars, Victor Rolls, Imanari Rolls, etc.)
Flying armbar (Shinya Aoki): https://www.dailymotion.c[...]deo/x1mttx
Flying armbar / Chaotic (Dave Camarillo): https://www.youtube.com/w[...]wu3T2MWvEE
Victor Roll (Reilly Bodycomb): https://www.youtube.com/w[...]rlEZOrIlO4
Victor Roll #2 (Reilly): https://www.youtube.com/w[...]ITmcnBtvzY

Imanari Roll (Masakazu Imanari): https://www.youtube.com/w[...]J9c7L3lmPc
Imanari Roll #2 (Stephan Kesting): https://www.youtube.com/w[...]-y3dF8fKyg
Notes:
* I find the Chaotic safer than more conventional flying armbars, but it does require a bit of wrestling to get them to the position generally
* I actually prefer the way Vlad Koulikov shows the Victor Roll over what Reilly shows as a matter of personal preference but couldn't readily find a video of Vlad showing it.

nice vid! I discovered the K Guard way later and found out that is has many names, but first time I hear the Bear Trap ^^
K-Guard was named by Neil Melanson after his coach Karo Parisyan, who used it in MMA, here's some in his fight with GSP in 2004
https://youtu.be/_OW63qvC4ck?t=266
Aaron Milam calls it the Squirrel Guard
Jon Thomas has a gi variant and calls it the Keymaster Guard

To me it was introduced by my coach Martin Aedma (https://www.facebook.com/[...]650879871/) around 2014 I think.
I don't know where he got it from exactly. It got named "bear trap" because you attach to opponents leg like a bear trap.
