Saw this in a Facebook page and got me thinking about things people say about BJJ that are kind of annoying and started wondering what other people have heard.

For me it's the "BJJ is just Judo". I have to hear this one all the time since I also train in Judo. Yeah, the two have similarities since they are both grappling systems, just like we have similarities with wrestling for the same reason. But after doing both for a while, if you think they're the same, you're not paying attention.

This one is easy to explain why it's wrong. A brief list of what you are allowed to to in BJJ that is illegal in Judo:
- Anything that requires a pistol grip.
- Anything that requires a cats paw grip
- Any takedown that has you touching your opponent's leg with your hands
- Ducking under your opponent's arm in standing without breaking his collar grip first
- Any Lapel Choke
- Being on the ground for more than 20 seconds
- Any foot/leg locks, including those allowed in the IBJJF competitions, even the white belt ones.
- Wrist locks, all of them.

Basically, if you do BJJ for a while, and then pick up Judo, your first class will be 90% people telling you every 30 seconds in sparing "you're not allowed to do that" and "BJJ is just Judo". I've started adding, "Yeah, if you take away 90% of the techniques, they're basically the same."

I'm not slagging Judo here either. I love Judo and a Judoka would kick pretty much every Jiujiterrio's ass in a stand up mach. But they aren't the same, and I'm honestly beginning to think they couldn't be more different and still be grappling systems.

In the judo club I go to noone complains if I go for a lapel choke e.g. GERBY (named after an olympic judoka after all) and blackbelts happily let me spar them with allowed leg grabs etc...

Okay, might be a German thing. I've tried 3 Judo Clubs here in Cologne and everyone without exception is really focused on the rules.

DUMB THINGS PEOPLE SAY ABOUT BJJ:
„BJJ is only ground fighting“
„For self defense better add Krav Maga to your BJJ“

I know,
Everybody has a different approach to BJJ and perhaps if you just love the sport aspect of bjj and focus on that, then perhaps often people don’t or don’t want to train self defense, and that is totally ok!

From my perspective BJJ is complete game, stand up, Clinch, ground , with and without punches and with self defense (and it served me very well so far on duty).

- So in my opinion it isn’t only ground and i don’t need to train other self defense systems as an add on.

'That would never work on me. I would just punch them in the face if they tried to grab me like that.'
I've put two people to sleep in my life who tried to tell that these chokes they really don't work... (NB! And then were willingly allowing to experiment.)

Great way to make them a believer! Lol. I'm curious, if they signed up for lessons after that.

I've had someone who didn't train tell me that the only reason BJJ worked in the early UFCs was because no one knew takedown defense lol

A few I have heard over the years:

"I am a real fighter, I don't hug with my pajamas on." (karate guy) Lol
"You bjj guys look like dogs F'ing"
"When I am in my horse stance, nothing can hurt me" (literally said this before I took him down with a leg hook.)
"That bjj don't work on me, I am from the school of hard knocks" (oh brother)

Knew a Black Belt in Jersey that when ever he was showing a technique he suddenly had a brazilian accent.
He didn't even speak a lick of Portuguese either. It was very surreal. Lol

Very often I hear :
Oh Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, I guess that’s like Caipoera?
The funniest thing once somebody said:
Brazilian .... hm do you wear thongs ?
