Rash guards under your gi

I've always preferred wearing a rash guard under my gi. I simply find it more comfortable both for myself and I'm more comfortable knowing my training partner doesn't have to endure my slimy sweaty body when it opens during rolls. Especially for women that train with me.
I'm interested to know what the Jitsu community feels about wearing a rash guard under your gi, and for your training partners wearing/not wearing one.
Should it be mandatory? Why/why not?

No strong feelings for or against. As long as you and your gear are clean, I don't care much.
I heavily prefered no rashie under for about the first 7 years of training, but then one particularly cold winter started to use them, and now I'm just feel more cozy wearing one. Short sleeves though!
Well-shaped men look better without one in the kimono. More of a classic martial arts look.
Prior to competitions, I switch back to bare chest for a while to get used to it (most comps have outlawed men from using rashguards under the gi... which is kinda ridiculous).
The worst is an old sweaty t-shirt wrapped over your face in no-gi...

I guess it's cultural to some extend. Never worn one myself and almost everyone I trained with in Denmark did the same. Many girls just wear a sports bra under the gi. But we're also in general very comfortable with being naked around each other.
In the US, I have been pulled aside a few times and asked to put one on. And Odin forbid those times I've taken off my gi jacket on the mats there, oh my oh my.

Most likely.
I figured out it's just due to personal preference, we have some people do it, others don't. The MMA dudes hang/wrestle around the mat half naked all the time anyway.
I remember an incident where a Finnish competitor got a written warning from the IBJJF when he dared to take off his hoodie from under the gi top in the bullpen area... Feels so weird in our cultural context.

I remember I was once in a gym in the US with a large matspace. I dropped my jacket at one end and started walking across the mat. As I had almost reached half way across, I realized that pretty much everyone was watching me, mouths open, in despair - whispering to each other, not believing that I would do such a thing (exposing my nipples and all!!!). It was extra awkward as I couldn’t figure out if I should keep going, speed up to reach my destination of the changing room or I should turn around, run back, put on my gi jacket and then take the same walk across the mat again. Very difficult cultural situation for a tourist like me.

I just feel more comfortable wearing one. If I had a six-pack maybe I wouldn't wear one, I have a keg though. LOL

At my home gym no one cares either way. I do a lot of cross training around Houston, Texas and I personally don’t like wearing a rash guard but I always adhere to what the gym traditions look like. If I see everyone wearing one I will wear it just to not rock the boat. In no gi I always wear one.

I prefer wearing a rash guard underneath too. But I don’t care if my partner does or not. For me it’s comfort and an easier transition to no gi rolls or when I teach kickboxing after.

Who doesn't love removing suspect short hairs from the back of throat mid roll?

I prefer with underneath, but that's just a comfort thing for me. I also wear spats. Gi pants start klingons to my legs when they get sweaty.
But I also prefer when my training partners wear rash guards. Mainly because we generally switch between gi an no gi while we're sparring and I prefer not having someone's sweaty hairy chest in my face.

I mainly wear it so Im able to quickly take the jacket off if I want to roll nogi since I dont want to rub my armpit in people's faces if I can avoid it. Its more for others sake rather then myself.
Also in Christian's case, his torso is as smooth as a baby's ass so it doesn't really bother people but when you have a full chest and belly hair it's a different story.

I don't wear a rashguard under my gi. I tried it once or twice and felt it makes me get to hot. Christian, I cant believe people actually complained about that. At my gym most guys train without the rashguard under their gi. When done training we usually take off our gi tops because we are hot.

Hot as in warm or as in sexy?

I don't care if anyone wears or doesn't wear a rashguard under the gi top. I started wearing one under my gi top after a few ringworm and MRSA infections. (2007 or 2008 or so)
Decided that people are nasty and at least it offers me some protection even if limited. Man I used to overheat in the rashguards too. I'd have to cool my ears off with something cold for awhile. Now I'm used to it.

Given that competitions generally don't allow it, I can't understand any school requiring one. I'll wear one just so I don't have to wear a gi during warm-ups, but I honestly prefer going without.

I prefer not to wear a rash guard under my gi, I get too hot (temperature wise). I'll wear one if I'm visiting a school and it's required or it's a camp and we could be going back and forth from no gi to yes gi

I started always wearing one. My first time without it was competition and while it didn't actually bother me or distract me i just dont wanna train without one.

Its pretty funny that. I mean its one thing to be bothered by a sweaty man chest while your rolling but to openly gawk at someone with no shirt on cos its not what your gym does is silly. Just dont look hahah. Super awkward experience

For me its certainly not about exposing my self or other doing it. Its just that while rolling i feel like its more pleasant for me and my partners. I definitely dont think it should be mandatory because everyone is different.
People can choose who they roll with so if they don't like the sweaty man chest they can choose a different training partner.

Perhaps this is the reason why you got them looks! And poor Mathias was one of the witnesses on that day.

For adults I don’t think it matter. I go back and forth from wearing one to not wearing one. When I travel I always bring a few incase one of the schools I’m going to drop in on require them. I do my research prior to showing up but I have had to make a few audible calls one went to a different school.
I do recommend that kids wear them during the kids classes. This is mainly because the kids loose their belts after about 30 seconds into warmups and running around the rest of the time
Looking like Tarzan.

Everyone at my gym wears them. You'd definitely get some strange looks if you tried to go shirtless.
If no shirt / sports bras only for women was the culture at a gym, I'd go with it.
That said, I've only been training this sport for 16 months and I've already accidentally grabbed a dick and put my finger in someone's mouth while rolling (not on the same day!). I guess I'm glad I don't have to add "had my face ground into someone's hairy chest" to my "what happens on the mats stays on the mats" list.

Doing it at the same time is a definite blue belt move.
That said, I hate when people wear a t shirt under the gi, especially if it's loose fitting. i'm always getting my fingers tangled up in it.

This! Even worse is when they're wearing a T-shirt over their rash guard. I mean seriously, pick one!
