For anyone interested Bernardo Faria is currently giving away a free instructional on BJJ Fanatics with the promo code FARIAFREE21 . When a fighter/grappler gives one away I will usually buy one of their other instructional so they're making money from it. I got the foundations of bjj (never a bad idea to back and review the basics when you feel the need to) and bought the closed guard as well as that is a part of my game I want to work on improving further. Also curious what instructional if any have others bought on there and which have helped improve your bjj? Have a good weekend everyone!

I have mixed feelings about BJJ Fanatics. Horribly spammy marketing (never give them your email address!) and I really dislike the "inflate prices but have constant sales to make people pay more because they think they're getting a deal" approach.

But, it's been cool that Faria has offered a lot of free stuff over lockdown, plus his instructionals at least are full of good content. I got plenty out of his Battle Tested Half Guard, his fundamentals set is decent too.

Yeah, the $179 instructionals from Danaher and Crew are ridiculously priced.

Thanks! I grabbed one. I’ve bought a few from them. Tons of emails, I agree. Instructional's have always been rather expensive but I’m really happy with any I bought.

same i dont go too crazy with my purchases on there but if i see something i like and its not ridiculously priced i'll make an occasional purchase if i can think it'll benefit my style or give me a new wrinkle to my game. Theres frequent promo codes so that'll give u a break on the price sometimes

I refuse to pay their prices....but I'm happy to let my mother occasional pay it, when she asks me what I want for xmas or whatever. :P

The rip-off priced (even with a discount, which is entirely intentional, they want you to pay over the odds so super inflate the 'normal' price) Danaher Guard Retention set was pretty good, I have to admit. The more reasonably priced Priit instructionals have been good too.

Thanks for the heads up!

I like them, if mostly for the sheer volume of material available.

Spammy, sure, if you sign up, but there are ways to block that stuff. And way better in this respect than the predecessor BJJ Super Deals.

I mostly like to support smaller name instructors who I've met & deemed good. (I hope they get at least some kind of a cut!)
You can find stuff only from there from people like Octavio Couto, Wim Deputter, Thomas Lisboa, Tarik Hopstock, Francesco Fonte... :)

And especially when there's a "Daily Deal" of half off instructionals during a -40% campaign, those prices come down to very reasonable.

Danaher's solo drills was free last night as well, not sure about today. I haven't checked.

My biggest grip with them is for the price they are asking, you'd expect modern standards of video production. But frequently, the video is passable at best, and the audio is often below par. I certainly don't enjoy hearing the cameraman coughing and breathing when I'm trying to watch. The best quality ones are usually those that the person has recorded and edited themselves (i.e. Lachlan Giles).

But there is a lot of valuable material on there.

I watched Cyborg's tornado guard series in 480p. It was awesome. HD quality didn't change any of the value of the techniques and Cyborg's teaching methods. But I agree. The first leg lock series from the fanny pack man had terrible audio. They shot the series again and improved quality.

I'd prefer to buy from places like Digitsu and Techniqly, where the prices are always reasonable and there isn't any obnoxious marketing. :D

But a point in BJJ Fanatics favour is that I'm told the cut for the instructor is pretty decent. I've bought two of Priit's instructionals on there during one of their numerous 'sales', and knowing that he was (apparently, I don't know for certain) getting a decent chunk of the money made the decision a little easier. ;)

totally agree, I've bought a few Lachlan sets because I'm a fan, have visited his gym twice, and watched a lot of his free youtube videos back in the day.

Yeah: without knowing anything more about it other than what you just posted, that certainly seems like a cool move by Bernardo Faria. It doesn't make me any more keen on BJJ Fanatics, but it does make me like Faria more. :D

It's impossible to not like Bernardo. Even if he really should hire a new marketing team.
I've heard Faria is totally on board with the horrible marketing, rather than it just being a scummy marketing exec calling all the shots. That may be hearsay, though.

Well, if it's working for them, of course he should be on board.

Sure, I can see why. Personally I would rather not make a lot of money than make it that way, but I'm very very anti pushy marketing. I can't fault him for liking a successful business model, even if it's not one I like myself.

And hey, as much as I will complain about BJJ Fanatics, I still buy stuff from them. :P
