Your opinion: Consequences for creating a fake profile to "like" your own content and "thumbs down" a local opponent??

Someone has created a fake black belt profile and used it to like content on his/her own child's profile, as well as dislike/poop-smiley photos of a local opponent (also a child). To protect the child, we will not mention any names, nor will we accept anyone else mentioning/guessing names in this topic. It would be horrible to grow up, google your name one day and then find something like this. Please respect this.

The fake profile managed to get his profile image verified using a photoshopped image of someone holding up the handwritten note. We check MANY of these every day and this one slipped the moderators' attention. He did not manage to pass ID verification.

IP addresses in our logs, handwriting, browsing patterns etc. all match up and we could quickly identify who created the fake profile. We, of course, have all the "receipts" and can prove this without a doubt, although it would make little sense to lay that all out here.

What do you think should be the consequences of this? I would love to hear your opinion before we make a decision between the moderators.

(In related news, we have also just blocked photo stream for non-adult users and we will continue to expand these restrictions as I will have more time to implement it in the code)

I have seen another parent create a white belt profile and they have send me messages, posted on my wall and sent me friend requests all asking to vote for this kid. This seems very weird to be but hopefully with the steps you guys have taken to limit their voted points that show on their profile with the 50+ rating that will discourage this behavior.

This is nuts we are talking about children .. Honestly I have no tolerance for that type of behavior and would ban the person who did it.. Ridiculing and demeaning of a child by an adult is wrong anyway you cut it

Person needs to get the boot. I feel sorry for the child but accounts should be deleted.
The child can start a new account once he/she/zef/zie/it/whatever (did I get everyone) is old enough to create an account that does not need parental supervision.

I agree with the ban, I would say it should be listed in the terms of using this site that if this type of thing happens you are subject to a lifetime ban from the site.

If someone was doing this to another kid at the gym they’d be banned from the gym. They should be banned from the site.

This is a debate we're also having, but let's keep it separate from this case :)

A ban seems like the most obvious solution, but leaving the profile up with some indication that it's inactive (and the reason(s) why) could be good.

E.g., this person was verified while active, but has been barred from accessing this site for violating community guidelines.

I think there's no question that the fake adult profile should be banned.

Should their child's account also be banned? That is the question.

Honestly, though, it may be time to limit this site to 13+. This is essentially the Facebook of jiu-jitsu. Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc. don't allow child accounts for a reason. (I say that as someone who made an account for her then-6yo and will miss it.)

Eventually, you can probably find a way for training parents to list their training children on their own profiles. All I really want to be able to do is list my son's belt promotion dates, tournaments, medals, etc. Screw getting kid belts verified.

You could also make a category for "BJJ parent/guardian" profile and then they can have the same functionality without training.

I agree... no need to have profiles of children under 13. Other social media platforms keep them out... why not this?

Beltchecker also includes quite sophisticated (and free!) tools for academy administration, including logging class attendance, front desk check-in, and membership payment tracking.

It is of utility for academy owners who use the system to be able to use it for all members.

Fake profiles are removed as soon as they're outed.

User in question is managing multiple profiles on the site.

Sounds like a problem for the webmaster. Lol.

Seems like a ban would theoretically be unfair for the child, but I'm sure that s/he probably has bigger issues to face in life, based on the behavior of the parent. In the end I think it's most important to keep this site honest, and in striving for that ideal there will inevitably be casualties along the way, unfortunately.

Unacceptable behaviour, outright pathological.

I feel sorry for the kid.

But a ban seems warranted.

Another parent tried to sollicitate my vote for his kid. This is what I replied. The parent didn't respond.

"Hello,

Thanks for reaching out.

As a father of two, and a primary school teacher with a great interest in developmental psychology, I do not approve of kids using social media platforms, nor of parents using it to promote their talented children.

I understand you are quite proud of XXXX. XXXX seems to be very talented!

However, I urge you to reconsider promoting XXXX in this way. Both as a social media 'presence', and as a professional athlete in the making.

The metal health risks later in life, really aren't worth it.

This is an example of the type of problem parents can bring into combat sports. I have never really trained kids but watching some parents at friends schools and tournaments has truly made me wonder what is wrong with people

UPDATE: We ultimately decided to ban the person in question. The profiles of his/her children have been deactivated and can be claimed by the children themselves at the age of 13, should they wish. We, of course, also offered to delete all their profile data from the site.

We will continue to monitor and improve measurements to protect non-adults on Beltchecker and it's sister sites.

Thanks for your input.

Adult ranks don't start until what? 16?

Just ban users from under the age of 16 from using the site and then you don't have to full around having to edit 20 different things.

Problem solved.
