I asked this in the original thread, decided to start a new one as a spin off.

If someone like Lasu promotes someone to black belt and they later get degrees on the belt from a legit instructor, does that "cleanse" or validate them? Would the community validate someone promoted to black belt by Lasu who later got a stripe from a legit instructor?

What's the context of the stripe? Was it at a mandatory seminar that most affiliations have? Hosted by the illegitimate instructor ? Still not legit. Promotions are common at those things with just the word of the instructor . I don't think it proves much

I don't have much expertise in what black belts should do or who's qualified to be one.

What I know is that, if my instructor gave me my blue belt next week and I found out a few months later that he was a fake, I would go to a new instructor, ask them to evaluate my skills, and wear whatever belt they told me to wear---even if it meant putting on a white belt again.

That is a tough one.

I did exactly that years ago. Fake is an overstatement... but he wasn't legit. I left gave up my blue belt and started new as a two stripe white belt

I like that you put the 2 stripes on that bad boy. Lol. For some reason I'm getting a huge kick out of that right now.

The guy I started training with put it on cause I wasn't a pure beginner. I understood a lot of the basics positions. But I was technical dogshit

That is a difficult one.. The stripe is an indication of time as a Black Belt so the stripes were under pretense of the original belt

I get time served, but isn't time served really only served being on the mats doing actual training.

Is it really time served if the black belt promotion wasn't legitimate?
I'd think that when you're promoted to black belt by a legitimate instructor is when your 'time' starts

Time served is only relevant when a person actually gets promoted to black belt legitimately. I don't think it applies to fake black belts.
Hell nothing applies to a fake black belts when you think about it.

There are quite a few unsavory instructors of big name associations, who only care about affiliation fees, and barely roll with their upper belt students.

It's entirely possible to get a stripe on a black belt, without having had any hands on training with the promoting instructor.
Because few schools have a well defined curriculum or standard for promotion above black belt - except time served.

Exceptions that come to mind are the Relson and Roy Harris lineages, for instance. Especially Roy had a super intense curriculum for black belts.

So on the whole, getting a grade on black belt from someone means very little.

The question is, where and how was the initial black belt earned?

What I don’t get:
This „Lasu“ guy was affiliated in the past, before falling out with him, with the famous, renowned and very legit coral belt Carlos Machado and got a 2nd degree (and 3rd degree?) on the blackbelt from him. So for sure Carlos Machado checked Lasu‘s performance and teaching skills on the mat, didn’t he? If I was the headcoach of an affiliation and somebody would like to join, I would check the legitimacy (linaege, certifications) and performance/skills.....at least he did some seminars with him I would think.
I mean Mestre Edmilson Alves for example, the 8th degree coral belt from the fadda lineage, wrote he checks candidates before they want to switch to his affiliation. Everybody here I think follows my opinion, that Mestre Alves is old school, real and legit as it gets:“.... and it is mandatory to be evaluated and examined and that then if approved he could be part of my team...“ to quote Mestre Alves. Everybody read his statement I think.
So if a guy got his blackbelt from „Lasu“, but some years later switched affiliations and gets then officially certified by Mestre Edmilson Alves, cause he evaluated the guy personally on the mat, i would assume he is legit. Performance and skills evaluated by a legit coral belt.

Has anyone here ever read Catch Me If You Can? There was a decent film adaptation years ago with Hanks and DiCaprio, but the book was even better.

The guy was able to fake being a pilot, a lawyer (he passed the bar), a doctor, and a sociology professor.

It's bizarre when fakes fool people but it happens.

Alves has a smaller affiliation that Machado does. We put in this work when information was everywhere and it still took a good month. This has to be YEARS ago

Stripes after blackbelt are due to time spent, not mat ability. So, personally, I'd vote no.

This test is implemented to check if Tatu truly exists or not. That's my theory anyway. And it's silly. Of course he exists.

But I bet people like Lasu can't pass that test.

Well I haven't really seen a black belt give another black belt from another organization a stripe unless they trained with them for a long time directly or they legit know their skill level... Robson has a few black belts that switched to his organization and didn't get their actual stripes until around their 2nd or 3rd degree. even though they been black belts for that long. I know one was his friend up to purple belt and then came back to the states a black belt... He didn't give any stripes until it was about time for his 2nd degree.

I know a lot of black belts will NOT give stripes to another person's black belt unless its OK'd by the previous instructor or they have been training with them directly.

Lets face it some affiliations are great and do a lot for their organizations and others are money making scams where the head of the association barely knows the professors under them..

So if Lasu have black belts to owners of schools in the area, are their belts in question? Does the fact that these guys joined other affiliations matter? Is this all just a waste of time worrying about it? Who knows. Guess it depends on the local BJJ community and what they really care about.
