So who are some people who were caught with fake or suspect belts?

I'll update this post with the list.

Emma Barber (note: stopped wearing the fake black belt when called on it)
Maycee Barber (note: stopped wearing the fake black belt when called on it)
Jordan Matthew Gregory
Josh Robinson
Randy "Lasu" Rogers

-----------
DISCLAIMER: CYA, use "allegedly" where appropriate (lawyers love that term) and link to your evidence if you can. Alvin Ang (blue belt) was / is being sued by UFC Singapore for calling their coach/trainer Iskandar Saim a "fake" brown belt. It could happen to you.

If anyone sees a name on this thread that they feel does not belong here (including their own), feel free to comment, DM me, or contact me on social media (Facebook: Bridget Jack Jeffries / ClobberGirl, Instagram: WeightedGlory, Twitter: Weighted_Glory, E-Mail: [email protected]). Even if I do not agree with you, I *will* share your side of the story.

Emma Barber and Maycee Barber -- 2015 -- Were allegedly wearing black belts while teaching kids' BJJ classes at Fort Collins Gracie Jiu Jitsu; they were 2-stripe blue belts at the time. When called on it, they claimed those were their karate black belts, but the photographs clearly show them wearing black belts with red bars, which are unique to BJJ and not used in Kenpo or Kajujenbo (their karate instructor's style). Reportedly they stopped wearing the fake belts when called on it.

Josh Robinson -- Yes, the one incarcerated on child pornography charges (among other things) in Singapore. In a March 2015 interview he all but admitted to self-promoting to black: "I have never been on a path where I could be taught under an experienced coach. I was almost always the experienced coach. So I’ve never been able to be on track to get a black belt after nearly 20 years of training. Because if I’m the coach, who would give me one? Even though I was tapping brown belts a decade ago." Reportedly he has blocked people for asking about his lineage / who promoted him to black.

Randy "Lasu" Rogers -- 2020-2021 -- Seems to have self-promoted from white to 7th degree coral belt, with the exception of a degree or two on his (apparently fake) black belt maybe coming from Carlos Machado. Also claimed to be affiliated with Edmilson Alves and the Fadda lineage when he was not. Has blocked BeltChecker members on Facebook who asked questions about his promotions or protested this fuckery (including yours truly).

Jordan Matthew Gregory -- 2020-2021 -- Was reportedly a white belt in 2013; claims to have been promoted to black belt in 2014. His instructor, Randy "Lasu" Rogers (who is himself an apparently fake coral belt; see above) said he was going to promote him in 2014 but did not because of a "falling out." Mr. Gregory's social media feeds show him wearing a brown belt from at least 2016 through December 2020, when he was suddenly promoted to 2nd degree black belt by Rogers. Has blocked BeltChecker members who asked questions about his promotions or protested this fuckery (including yours truly).

If you want to jump down some big BJJ drama rabbit holes, back in the day Ari Bolden/Knazan/Kay etc got a ton of flak (soooo many threads on that over the last decade), as did Brandon Quick for different reasons, then there's Jordan Tabor. The latter two are interesting cases, as they had verifiable skill, but the way they got their black belts was questionable (e.g., Tabor awarded himself a black belt and then spammed the internet with bizarre conspiracy theories about the IBJJF being out to get him).

Anyone remember the story about David Lang, who claimed to be a black belt under Wallid Ismael and/or Giva Santana
Yeah, there were some big threads on that on The Underground, IIRC (I'm guessing you were on that site at the time?) Pops up infrequently. This is the motherlode that kicked it off, IIRC: https://web.archive.org/w[...]lack-Belt/

We had a guy here in Canada years back that would wear a black belt and do WWE moves on video. It was hilarious but he was claiming he was a bjj blackbelt until confronted by local folks. He back pedaled and asserted that it was all just an elaborate joke/hoax. Many took him seriously and others like myself thought he was funny as shit. His antics were ridiculous and anyone that took it seriously needs to get some counseling ASAP. Lol

Edited to state that he wore black socks all the time on video. Why do fake black belts always wear black socks? WTF?

Did you ever come across Ari Bolden/Knazan/Kay, given he's in Canada too? Though naturally Canada is a pretty big place: he's in Victoria BC specifically. I'm not sure how integrated he was with the local BJJ scene. IIRC the zillion threads on him, there is a Carlson Gracie affiliate (Zuma) right near Bolden's school who never had any luck with asking him to roll etc.

Though I don't put Bolden in the same category as some of the others, although he started off his BJJ career as somebody from a different style putting on his TMA black belt (which interestingly also had doubt cast on it, from shen IIRC) and blurring the line, he did then go and get his BJJ belts from people with a legit lineage (Eddie Bravo and then Keith Owen).

another one from back in the day was alleged black belt Gene Simco. This goes to mid 2000s in the NY BJJ scene. He got called out by many people and this was on the Bullshido site when it was big. This was a really big controversy in like 2008 or so.

One of the threads I was able to dig up.

any of the NY guys remember this one?

Yes Gene Simco I remember. He claimed he was a Leo Dalla black belt if I am not mistaken.
He became a pastor in a church or something.

I forget who he claimed gave it to him but he was able to carry on for a while because this was the early BJJ scene and back then it was a lot easier to get away with it. He eventually got caught.

I can't remember the details of Simco's belt, but I do remember the much more serious controversy about child abuse: https://www.bullshido.net[...]court-case

I also remember a lot of discussion about how Simco apparently got his then-student Brian McLoughlin to write his BJJ book, for which Simco took all the credit. Lots of weird financial stuff circulating around Simco, he was one of the first Americans to heavily push instructional BJJ material, IIRC.

The very first was Paul Viele as far as I'm aware, later famous as the guy behind World Martial Arts, as well as allegedly the guy who wrote (allegedly) fake reviews as 'Bill Lewis' dissing his rivals and praising his own company.

Ah, that was it: Leo Dalla. Thanks, that helped me dig out some old threads. rec.martial-arts is awesome for finding discussion about old school BJJ drama. Here's one from 2003 on SImco:

https://groups.google.com[...]MKuZ4Yf2sJ

Here's a quote from another thread, again about Simco: https://groups.google.com[...]5V5pIYtDsJ

"About a week ago, I asked a question about the propriety of instructors wearing "the wrong belt" when teaching. Among others, you came back with a definite nay: http://tinyurl.com/uvr1

Would it surprise you to learn that the guy I was asking about was Gene Simco, who prior to 1999 wore his Japanese Jujutsu black belt to teach Brazilian Jiu-jitsu, even though he had earned only a blue belt in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu at the time?

Would it surprise you to learn that Gene Simco claimed to his present instructor, Michael "Bolo" Jen (http://www.jenbjj.com/) that he had first earned his BJJ brown belt from Fernando "Cabeça" Sarmento Jr (http://www.fernando-cabeca.com/) but that after some sexual harrassment scandal, the belt was rescinded - a claim that Cabeça adamantly denies? Instead Cabeça claims that Gene Simco wanted the brown belt to help his "marketing" efforts and Cabeça refused to participate in the deception."

Ha - thanks. I used to do it a loooot, when researching the history articles I wrote for Jiu Jitsu Style Magazine back in the day. There is some incredible stuff preserved on the internet. I especially love the way that almost all the old issues of Black Belt Magazine got digitised a while back, so all the original kerfuffle leading up the UFC, the reaction during and the aftermath is preserved on its letters pages and various articles, interviews. Makes for fun reading! E.g., this pissy letter from 1994 about the first Ultimate Fighting Championship not being 'ultimate' enough - https://books.google.co.u[...]mp;f=false :D

Or indeed this transcript of the original Judo Journal letter from 1960, which Anthony Flores sent about his meeting with some Brazilian guys with the last name Gracie: http://www.bestjudo.com/a[...]-jiu-jitsu

The Wayback Machine is also one of the greatest things ever. And a great example of the old adage about nothing every truly being deleted on the internet (though some urls aren't archived on there, sadly, there are ways for sites to stop the Internet Archive saving captures). http://www.archive.org/index.php

Josh Trowbridge is a Tang Soo Do instructor who seems to have gone through the a Gracie blue belt program, registered as a BJJ black belt with a sham certifying authority, and to have promoted people under him based on photos BJJEE/reddit dug up. I'll defer to the reddit and BJJEE links below for you to draw your own conclusions. The business no longer appears to be open teaching TSD or otherwise at this time.

I met Ari in person when I went to Victoria a few years ago. He was really nice and Keith Owen was actually there that day, so I had the pleasure of getting to roll with him, too. Keith just kind of flowed with me, as I'd imagine he could have made it a bad time for me if he so chose lol. Also, while I don't recall the specific injury, I do remember that Ari was only able to use one arm while rolling, but he was still willing to roll with me
