Looking for suggestions on preparing and conducting Zoom classes. We are still on lock down and I have been doing a Zoom class once a week to keep folks engaged.
It becomes challenging because most people do not have a partner or a grappling dummy handy.
Anyone have any recommendations on how to keep the classes interesting and beneficial to the participants? There are only so many solo drills you can do before it starts to get boring and long winded.
Any ideas are welcome.
Thanks in Advance

Edited: Keep in mind I have all age groups, from kids to adults

We were doing a ton of those between all the various Yamasaki gyms. Everyone had different ideas. Some guys were doing video breakdowns of matches which was super popular for the competitors. Other people were doing solo drills only. Different crowd for those. What we learned was that it's best to do different classes of various topics and let them know ahead of time. I personally hate solo drills and so I only ran classes that required a partner.

I think the problem is we are grouping everyone together and we don't normally do that in regular in person classes.
Thanks for the tip. I will message the owner and make that suggestion right now.
I just did one hour of warmup and solo drills.
Some folks just sat there. If we change up the format maybe they will get engaged more.

Ha - well, you already know the main thing I'm going to recommend. :P

I think grappling dummies make a HUGE difference to Zoom classes. I've been teaching them several times a week for the last year, at the moment three times a week. Initially I was just doing solo drills, but started to run out of stream a few months into it. I then saw Tom Barlow had a vid on making your own grappling dummy, so I did that and told all students they had to make one too in order to train.

Since then, both Zoom classes and my own training has gotten way way more interesting. Takes 5 mins to make one with stuff everybody has lying around the house (towels, pillows, a gi jacket, etc). Saying that, it is for sure a struggle to get people to train on Zoom: the most common excuse I hear is that people don't have enough room in their house. Which I can understand, though you don't need a whole lot of room, 10 x 5ft/3 x 1.5m is what I use.

My format at the moment is to teach for an hour, trying to stick as close to the format of 'normal' classes as possible under the circumstances. I'll go through 5 solo drills, followed by 3 grappling dummy drills, finishing up with a more in-depth technique and then stretching. Over the last year, I've built up a spreadsheet of roughly 100 solo and grappling dummy drills. I stick a number next to each drill when I teach it, so that I can make sure I'm not teaching the same thing too often (though I will run through a grilled chicken solo drilling sequence every time, as that's been my main project over lockdown).

Another thing I want to try is socials over Zoom. A few people have mentioned that although they don't want to do training over Zoom, they would be interested in just chatting to team mates, particularly as in England we've been in lockdown for a while now (there was a brief letting up between July and November last year, but that's been pretty much it). Just a matter of pinning down a time.

You can try using pillows or soft toys as dummies. I find music helps to make it a lot less dead. Just remember to share the music over Zoom so it can still pick up your voice clearly. I feel you, it's challenging and I hope you guys get through that phase soon

Thanks for the advice folks! I really appreciate it.
Let us know what kind of feedback you are getting, please. While we aren't doing any Zoom classes now, the reality of the future is that there will be more shutdowns and need for virtual learning. If you find a formula that seems to be working we would love to "borrow" your notes.

Yeah: this has been one of the things I've been trying to see as a silver lining to all the pandemic awfulness. Being forced to work on a whole new teaching format, along with the technological aspects, has meant I've learned a lot. Those are skills I'm hoping to continue honing after lockdown, like with distance learning students.

I have a few ex-students I've been helping to keep training despite being locked down, especially one of them who was stuck in Melbourne during their very strict several months long lockdown last year. She was both getting depressed about the situation and about her lack of training, so being able to offer her a training option via Zoom was pretty cool.

Yeah, same here. I spent most of life in the IT career field and have done tons of teleconference meetings but teaching BJJ was completely different! We even just setup of Google cameras for a constant stream of the gym for people to watch if they choose. Which we never would have done without the pandemic.

Awesome! I've always wanted to do that, but don't have a decent WiFi connection at the place I rent. In dreamland, where I finally own my own place, I will for sure do that. :D

I totally understand that...I started in a TKD gym 12 years ago and was scared TO DEATH to sign a lease for our own place when we moved.

We can't even go into our academy right now let alone live stream it. I'm doing zoom from home. I am hoping they loosen up restrictions on the 22nd. Fingers crossed

Yeah. I'd be more than happy to buy somewhere, I just don't have the money. Renting my own place, that I'm doing already, but I hate the feeling of instability. Mainly because my previous venue got bought by developers, so I had to really scramble to find somewhere else at short notice. Worked out well, but it means I will never feel 100% secure renting (though meh, I don't currently have a choice, same as most small gyms I guess ;) ).

Ugh, that really sucks. Are you guys getting any type of debt relief up that way? Like, do you need to keep paying rent even though you can't be open?

5 minutes to make one. FIVE whole minutes. :P https://www.facebook.com/[...]3273128496
I take 1 second to grab pillow. Energy efficient aka lazy :D
Good luck, David. You could also get the kids involved during warmups. Unmute one screen at a time and let them call out a move (jumping jack), then everyone does it together. You can also highlight the screen for the older kids so they get turns to be the coach. Gets them thinking what to do next

I hear ya man. I kept my day job and paid all expenses almost out of pocket for the first.....5 years or so? Seemed like an eternity. I finally quit my "job" about 2 years ago but the pandemic put a squeeze back on. Trying to get back to where we were but it's not easy for sure.

I think the academy owner is getting some kind of Covid relief. (I teach free there and work full time in construction) He is managing to keep the place afloat for now but it remains to be seen in the long term if this continues. Sad situation for club owners here.

Yep, I'm in a similar position. I started my school 7 years ago, one class a week in a small room. We've grown organically since then, meaning I've never had to make any big financial investments, until before lockdown we had loads of lessons a week and about 80 members, so I've been making enough to do that full time since late 2018.

Then lockdown hit in March 2020. Fortunately enough of my students have stayed on that I can pay my rent etc, but I'll inevitably have lost a sizeable chunk who won't come back (very understandable, it's been a year and a lot of things can change for people in that time, financially, in terms of relationships, health, etc).

But yeah, hopefully the world will get a grip on covid in a few months, then BJJ can get back to normal and I can keep pushing to where I wanted to be. At the point where I was on the cusp of expanding to a few (very small) affiliates, so that's exciting, I don't want to lose the momentum on that. ;)

I've only taught a couple of zoom classes (covering for my judo coach) but attended them regularly too. Solo movement, circuits indisguise (cardio is a necessary evil against the covid kilos), stand up uchikomi using fitness bands. I don't have a grappling dummy but found a gi jacket can be helpful with drill visualisation but also some spider stuff etc. Also. Yoga for bjj as been helpful for cool downs and extended mobility sessions.

Cool: is your judo coach still at Factory BJJ, or am I getting that mixed up? Either way I'd love to hear more about what specific drills you've been using, especially as so far I haven't really put in any takedown stuff into my solo drilling/grappling dummy classes (except some breakfalls).

Yeah, a bunch of good gyms in my area had to close as well. It's awful. I have been chatting with a lot of the other gyms around me and we have been comparing notes on what's working and what's not (at least the ones that will talk with us). We gotta stick together through this!
