I found a post on Facebook by Black Belt Magazine about a Chinese style of grappling: Shuaijiao (also spelled Shuai-Chiao). The article states "It is a standup grappling style, meaning that although there are hip throws, leg sweeps, and hand techniques, like many other arts, there is no ground grappling. The goal of Shuaijiao is to end up in a dominant position standing."

I've never heard of it. I was just curious if any of you have trained in this style and if so, your thoughts.

I've seen some videos online but that's pretty much the extent of my familiarity with it. It looks very interesting

There's a guy that rents space at our gym who does a shuaijiao class. Looks like a very theoretical, grappling-based martial art. From what I can tell, it's not practiced with a resisting opponent.

Practiced resistance or not, some of the throws that I've seen have been pretty brutal.

Good vid to watch. Interesting stuff. I love this stuff
Same. I'm not looking to become a practitioner, but I've enjoyed what I've seen so far.

Look up the competitions VERY practical for throws.. Judo and sambo have a lot of grip fighting this is more touch and go

Shuai Jiao is legit. Doesn't have much of a presence in the West compared to the likes of BJJ, judo, and sambo, but it's very widespread in parts of East Asia. Lots of crossover with practitioners of other styles like Mongol Bökh, Kazakh Kuresh etc. Like Phil said, there's not much of an emphasis on any kind of prolonged gripping - just lay your hands on the guy and send him flying as quickly as possible.

That is surprising. From what I've seen, Shuai Jiao typically involves as much resistance and sparring as judo. It might be more a reflection of his individual teaching style rather than the art as a whole.

yep +1

add to this, that shuai-jiao is an excellent/usual prep for Sanda (like kickoxing, with throws that count on point system) as far as i know.

it was introduced to me as the throwing part or chinese martial arts back in the 90's

That's quite possible. This guy who rents from us has done his class (even during pre-covid times) mostly solo, throwing around a dummy and snapping a belt and doing woo-woo stuff. He has a few people who come through from time to time, but never seen them actually spar.

You can make tons of stuff look really bad-ass when nobody's actively resisting you.

The competition videos are very action packed. No stalling. Even the kids competitions that I've seen have been great to watch.

For anyone who uses Instagram, it's worth following Lavell Marshall (http://www.instagram.com/[...]indshaolin). He's a Shuai Jiao guy who's been living in Inner Mongolia for the past two years, training and competing with the locals. Most of his videos focus on Bökh, but he often posts footage of Bökh practitioners laying down the law in Shuai Jiao tournaments as well.

Shameless self-promotion - I interviewed him recently here: https://thousandholds.net[...]an-steppe/

Completely agree. Fake martial art training videos come to mind. I've never practiced Shuai Jiao, but from what I've seen, it seems like a very legit throwing style.

I definitely like grip fighting, but this is something that I wouldn't mind cross-training in if there were something in my area

I feel that I look pretty impressive on a heavy bag, but the second you put an actual human in front of me who is trying to strike me back, things change drastically lol

Just finished listening to the podcast interview. Very interesting and he sounds very passionate about what he does. Impressed even more that he has no interest in the money aspect of the arts. Very refreshing.

Thanks for sharing, I hadn't seen this style before. I also enjoyed the sportsmanship of the two competitors, showed a lot of class.

Shuai Jiao World Cup - This is Lavell competing..

https://youtu.be/IJLrXegyoRc

Over the years I have seen a ton of BS being passed off as Shuai Jiao, Sanda and Chi-Na but also have seen a few real practitioners of each who were legit and able to make the styles work effectively it's funny but it's like judging BJJ by the world famous Lasu...

One of the best ground submission grapplers I have ever worked out with did an Indian style of submission grappling.. There are many obscure grappling styles that have merit but are pretty much unknown.. Look at how Sambo takes a backseat to BJJ..

Hell I basically put on a GI and compete using my base style grappling style Naban (Gamu Hkyen) in BJJ we all end up going back to our combat base and adapt and evolve to what we encounter it's the nature of combat.. The adversary makes you evolve to compete..

A friend of mine Vlad Koulikov a master of sport in Sambo and BJJ black belt competing in Shuai Jiao

It also appears that he has two live-in girlfriends, so I guess I’ll be training Shuai Jiao now.

One is more than I can handle
That’s probably true for me too. I just imagined two women cooking and cleaning for me, but I need to remember that I do all the cleaning, so adding another woman would probably just double my work.
