I am planning to start a new group at our gym (FX Jiu Jitsu) next august ( after lockdown and golf season:-) I understand that very one uses some sort of problem solving when planning stuff and experiments it on open mat. So not a new idea.
But has some one used it so that you propose a problem and solve it with students?
If you are using it, what are your experiences? What works? One problem for one hour? What kind of problems work best?

We sometimes use a standard warm up then i'll let the guys roll and ill observe whats happening during the rolls pick something thats stand out that I feel we can improve on.
Ask for a solution amongs the students and then offer my interpretation/thoughts then return to positional rolling and everyone has a chance to solve the problem and we build on from there.
we try to focus on no more than 3 x problems during a class or it can turn into a bit of a rabbit hole.

Thank you for responding Luke and Dimitri,
I don’t know exactly what I am looking for so both of you inputs are very valuable.
Maybe even more generic. I watched Matsi’s video on takedowns and he started warmup with a game where you get points for touching opponent knee. This could be a ”problem”. And students could share tactics on how they play. Or simple situation like how to get to a controlled position before actual passing guard? Maybe I am looking for microbattles and finding what the actual battle is (like in many Priits videos...lots of steps but some mistakes are bad.)
As you see... lot of help needed:-)
