Have you ever grappled with someone who claimed to be a certain rank but obviously was not?

How did the situation go?

I've never come across this situation in person (granted I am just a blue belt)

I have rolled with bad black belts. I have rolled with bad all belts come to think of it. Every journey is different and unique. Maybe injuries got in the way. Maybe they stopped training for years. Maybe that was not part of the conversation because that person is trying to get back into it and is not making excuses for themselves.

The infatuation with outing fake belts is weird. They out themselves on the mat and bad business will in time fix itself. Or it won’t.

I tapped many a black belt as a purple and a brown. Even snuck one in as a blue with a neat toe hold. Sometimes they just did not expect what was coming. Sometimes they were lazy. I see that now as a black belt. I find myself in a spot that I underestimated someone else and I have to scramble like a blue belt to get out. That is life.

Dang, if I have a black belt, does that mean I can never be submitted by a lower belt? Thats pretty unrealistic, I think.

I feel as a black belt it is extremely unrealistic. I got tapped last night not due to anything I did wrong, it what my partner brown belt did absolutely perfect.

But coming up as a blue belt and white belt I thought black belts that got tapped must be bad. I feel with all this talk of fakes that any upper belt that gets tapped must be fake.

Shoot, I watched Roberto Jiminez here in Houston as a blue belt 16 year old rip through an absolute black belt division.

Some people are just good

This may be an unpopular opinion...Why is rank important in this sense? If somebody has such low self esteem that they want to fake a BB or any rank in anything who cares? If they want to roll, cool. That being said, I am an unverified BB so perhaps I'm wrong :)

I'll be 53 in a few months. I'm not concerned with most of the nonsense in the bjj community. I am just happy to be able to grip up and roll or drill. The outcome doesn't matter to me anymore. This actually makes me train better and smarter. Longevity is my goal. BJJ was marketed as having no politics when I started in 95. It is the most ego driven, political pissing contest activity I have ever seen. Lol
I still love it and am passionate but I pay no mind to most things.

Yes. Here's an odd story.

One strange purple belt, let's call him Yogaman, was so clueless even the white belts drove a truck over him. Repeatedly. For a number of weeks of training with us.

His excuse was, he didn't get to do a full yoga warmup before, so he wasn't in the zone.

He was an athletic dude in his 20`s, mind you, not and old beat up geezer with cracking joints.

Two other tidbits.

1. Yogaman's instructor (or at least the one he claimed to be under) is a wonderful, highly respected figure. But he has a lot of affiliates and lives on another continent.

2. I saw Yogaman compete once, MANY years later. In the WHITE BELT division. He won a bunch of matches, barely, but looked shit doing so. I walked up to him after, and asked, so what happened to your belt? He shoegazed...

I grappled with someone that I would think was 100% faking his rank, if I didn’t know somebody actually gave him the belt. Not that I have this super high standards, but still.

Mama mia.

I want this to go somewhere, but I'm only 1/32th Italian, and haven't met the gentleman in question...

The Italian Commedia Dell'Arte Suave must get a sequel.

I'm going to ask the question nobody asks. Have you ever rolled with Luca judo green belt?
No, jiuteiro, but he did ask to be choked and carried across tatami...

If you as a blackbelt get submitted by a lower belt you must immediately commit Harikari.

Names have been changed to protect the innocent ... and the not so innocent.

A "black belt", lets call him Bob, once came to our class. I knew his history well being an internet nerd, but the head instructor, let's call him Bill, had no clue.

Being super nice, before we start rolling, Bill asks Bob to teach a technique. Bill always does this when black belts visit so that his students get exposed to different styles of teaching. Bob becomes nervous and says he can't as it would be disrespectful and that he wasn't prepared anything. Bill says, just teach your favourite technique, no big deal.

Bob having no choice starts to teach a kimura (not an americana, a kimura) from half guard top. Bob is sweating profusely and I kid you not, trembling. You hear it in his voice, you see it in his hands. He grabs the kimura and starts to apply it, from the top. He has not passed, he just starts cranking. His uke is confused and not sure what he's supposed to do. Bill is now confused too. All the whites and blues in class are sensing something is wrong. I'm cringing in the corner but loving this. Bill looks at me with a wtf look and I'm trying my best not to burst out laughing.

His uke, out of pity taps, Bill steps in quickly, thanks Bob for the technique and we immediately start rolling. Of course Bob does not roll, he's late for something and has to leave immediately.

Other story.

I did a bit of no-gi crosstraining at R-Grip, which is an mma/shooto gym. I'd already been a black belt for a few years. Everyone there knew I wasn't a noob.

Guy shows up for a trial class. Says he's never grappled in his life, just watched a lot of UFC.

Guy starts rolling with a relative beginner and does legdrags, bolo's, inversions, flying triangles and all sorts of fancypants jits. Goes super saiyan on unexpecting beginners.

We all look at the guy and nod: "This mf ain't no beginner."

Competition grapplers / enforcers move in and proceed to stretch the guy out in all ways imaginable.

Since it ain't my school, I don't partake in the mayhem, but observe closely how his soul get heelhooked out of his body.

Afterwards, guy gets kindly told to never go for incognito visits again.

Barry Golden, Ari Bolden.

And it's Ari Knazan now.

Also just realized I had typed, lol no, it's Ari ... meant to say it is NOT Ari.

I've rolled with black belts that felt super easy. But I suspect they were just taking it easy. Also rolled with total newbs who were really hard to deal with. An athletic spaz is always a tougher opponent than a technical bluebelt. At least for the first 2 minutes.

If I ever manage to tap a higher belt I assume they are taking it easy and allowing me to do so. I know I like to roll super lazy and light sometimes and get tapped for it. And that's fine.

I often get to roll with people where I feel like their level of resistance they can give me doesn't match their belt. But there are many factors that play in; perhaps they are nervous about rolling at a camp / with a black belt. Or even more probable, the style they play is just a bad match for mine.

I have also rolled with white belts who ripped me apart. I was teaching a handful of seminars in Russia back before BJJ really started to get it's grip there and most people "only" had experience in Judo, Sambo and wrestling. A lot of experience.

I competed quite a bit back in the day. I can count on 1 hand the number of time I competed against someone in gi who was clearly above the rank that they're competing at. Conversely, I always expected an opponent in nogi, who forgot to mention he is a Judo blackbelt, or a top level wrestler competing in the white or blue or beginner division...

I've also seen the dumbfounded looks when I'm inevitably asked, "How long have you been training?", that seems to be asked at camps or when visiting clubs. Yes I know, the skills don't match the time. lol I learned not to care about that a long time ago.

Sandbagging will always be a thing. IMO, there's no point in getting your panties in a twist about it.
