2+ months while I was a purple belt to recover from surgery, that's the only time I took more than a week or two off in the last 10.5 years.

I would take a week to heal new tattoos about once a year, I would still teach though. My knee surgery kept me out for 3 months in 2019 but came back stronger and older and hopefully a little wiser after 16 years of Martial Arts (Kenpo, Judo & BJJ)

8 months for two knee surgeries. Did not plan on ever training again, but was slowly sucked back in.

5 years to recover from divorce and single dadhood as a purple belt. New instructor made me wear my purple when I came back. EVERYONE was stoked to beat the crap out of the new purple belt. I got my revenge after about 6 months of rolling again.

3 months of recovery after my ankle broke in sparring in April 2017.
Some days off after getting my tattoos.

I'm interested in the length of break/breaks people have taken. No reason necessary.
Since I started in 2006, it would be something like 2 weeks a couple of times a year, due to being on holiday. Although quite often my holidays are BJJ camps, so there isn't a break. :P

But yeah, I'm very lazy and don't spar as much as I should, so even though I technically train 5 or 6 days a week (pre-covid), most of that is teaching rather than actually getting sweaty. ;)

So far, all the injuries I've had have been sufficiently minor that I could train around them, or at least still teach.

Since I properly started in 2003, I have been out on the average about 1-2 months every year due to 1 or two injuries.
Longest have been 4 months in 2015 and 4 months 2016 due to biceps' ligament tears.

I took off about 2 months because of girlfriend problems. Almost as bad a decision as actually dating her to begin with. LOL

I had a very bad case of the flu/pneumonia in the beginning of 2019 where I took almost a month off due to being so drained of my energy levels with a very finicky appetite before I could get back to training.

Forced 2 year break because I was stationed overseas at a location that had no bjj instruction anywhere.
Did Judo and Muay Thai and still rolled as often as I could with my wrestler friends during that time.
The most I have gone without any training at all was 2 months after I had back surgery. Then I started to move around slowly.
I am still not the same after that damn surgery.

longest ones have been for:

6 months elbow surgery
10 months knee surgery

Can't believe covid beat both of those ... going back is gonna be interesting.

10 months slipped disc in back. Was still on the mats teaching 6 days a week though, so I kept in touch with everything.

July 2010 through to Sept 2015 I think it was. That was a rollercoaster of a time and I often wonder what would have turned out if I never stopped. Hey ho. I mean, I still grappled in the week and was dipping in and out of MMA clubs but I really wish I had stayed focussed and knuckled down.

I took a month here and there to heal up from various injuries, but I haven't trained in over a year due to COVID. It's been rough. Plus, I have to find a new school once I get vaccinated because I moved since lockdown.

In my 15+ years I've had several injuries that required 4-6 weeks off. I'm not one to go to the gym and watch people train, so I'm away until I feel healed. Separated my shoulder from a slam: 6 weeks. Tore my psoas: 8 weeks. Tore my knees several times requiring surgery: varies. Sprained the ligaments in my spine: 4 weeks... Plus several other shorter times for other random injuries. lol That's a lot.

Hmmm. I pretty much took 2 years off. Personal life was a mess. Figured things out, realized that the one thing I can't give up again is BJJ. Training every week now. Best of all, got married and had another kid.

5 weeks out after cracking a rib badly (still sticks out).
I did that to two ribs, I know the pain! I separated the two ribs and broke them both, there is an odd "speed bump" now.. but this was pre-BJJ.

2014 .. hand injury, long story... I felt lucky that my physical therapy was next door to the gym. After crying for an hour of PT, I would go watch morning class, eventually, I gave up on PT and started to use the grips in class as the therapy. It was about a year I was out but when I came back it was only rolling with a few people that understood the extent of my injury and worked on strengthing my "weak" side. I did a ton of work on the left side because I could not use the right hand. I have bloody photos but will post the non-bloody one here.
