Ha - yeah, I'd be curious about that too! In my case, I cheated, as my nickname is one I gave myself, but long before I started BJJ. First time I ever got drunk at 16, I did a really shitty dance, kinda like badly done toprocking from breakdancing. I referred to it as the 'slidey foot dance'. When I got my first email account a couple of years later, I used slideyfoot for it, then just kept using that nickname for all the forums etc I signed up to ever since, along with the http://www.slideyfoot.com blog I started in around 2002.

Which means that as my real name is hard for non-Turkish people to pronounce (mainly because it is confusingly written Can, but pronounced Jun), many people I've known for years still just call me slidey. ;)

When my good friend Sam Kim started his company NHB Gear he created a forum on his site. Our favorite BJJ forum at the time, "In The Guard" forum, had shut down and the Underground forum was too full of BS and politics. So he created an account for me so I could help him on the technical side and I chose Joemoplata as my account name.

That forum was very popular and I helped him moderate that site for a long time until he had a hard crash and lost the DB. But the nicknames stuck with me and it's, quite literally, how most people know me.

Well mine I got because at the time I was the oldest guy training with my instructor. I was rolling with a younger guy at the time and he was talking to someone while watching us roll. At one point he said "olhar para o vovô ir" and from then on I was vovô and he calls me vovis mostly.

Please, please don't let any of my students see this post and get this idea as I am older than (nearly) all of them.

I tried to figure this one out, but didn't know one work in Portuguese - looked it up and man...

I sadly feel that way as well. 47, no cool Portuguese nicknames yet.

I guess the one nickname I've gotten over the years is "Jiu-Jitsu dad" because I'm so much older than most of my teammates so I've helped a lot of them out as a Dad would.

and then wristlocked them! LOL

If somebody else doesn't give you a nickname, just give yourself a nickname. I can guarantee it will be much nicer than if you leave it up to a Brazilian, their nicknames are often super mean. I think the worst one I encountered (when I was at the Roger Gracie HQ, quite a lot of Brazilians both on the teaching staff and training) was Xorume, which IIRC roughly translates as 'bin juice'. :P

Lmao, I embrace the nickname since. Especially when I can still hang with the 20 somethings in the gym. When people ask what Vovô means and they find out it means gandpa, they laugh and say I'm a tough as nails grandpa then.

But you make sure to remind me all the time that I am of the AARP age!

And yet you're younger than me, but that silver hair reminds you every morning when you look in the mirror that you are of AARP age. LOL

Good call. I tried giving myself a nickname at a job in my early 20's (was at a Tech company, chatting up a woman who was in her early 30's, I thought myself to be a modern Cassanova, and tried started the nickname Nova, and the rest of the guys decided calling my Cassie was better lol)

I've never had a jiu-jitsu nickname, but when I still fought MMA my manager at the time called me Iceman. I asked him why and he said it was because he had never seen someone get hit and just show no emotion and just keep working like I did.

Personally I never really embraced the name, unlike like the guys from my club. I always felt that it belonged to Chuck Liddell.

Outside of jiu-jitsu I have been call SlyPig, obviously linked to my surname Cunningham.

@vovis, dude if you hanging with the young guns and they calling you grandpa, then I'd chirp them flat out everytime they battle to keep up with you.

In South Africa they call that Bali strength or old man strength and it isn't something to trifle with. Lol

I got my jiu-jitsu name last year. That was definitely the highlight of my BJJ career. I dreamt of some real bad ass nickname but instead I'm known now at my academy as "PELUDO" (furry) ...
