What's the largest open mat you've ever been to?

I've been inspired by Christian's "Create Something" workshop that my friend Josh Janis (https://www.beltchecker.c[...]p?id=20581) shared with me after he attended a recent BJJ Globetrotters event. The awesome workshop can be viewed here on YouTube: https://youtu.be/gqtTRF5Fu98
I had the random idea of hosting "The Largest Open Mat Ever". I do not know what this will look like or exactly how everything will work out, but I feel compelled to make this happen! My first step is understanding what is the largest open mat people have experienced? So far in some facebook polls, the largest I've heard of is over 200 people at a globetrotters camp.
My goal for "The Largest Open Mat Ever" would be for a few hundred or 1000 grapplers to come together in a field with everyone's puzzle mats pushed together. We will have a few grills for BBQ and some beverages. People can donate to make the event run better. This summer in Wisconsin. Everyone hanging out, networking, and grappling. Not a seminar, not a competition, not a camp, but a huge freaking open mat, larger than you could imagine.
I know the last Grappling Industries competition in the Wisconsin Dells had nearly 1000 competitors and went from 9am to 1am. Yes you read that correctly. I'm imagining all of these people and their friends/team (and more!) could come together for a fun, free, open mat!

Here's a video from an early one with "just" around 150 people: https://www.youtube.com/w[...]jaCsFYEKDY
I think we beat that record more than a few times as some of the big camps in Germany had close to 300 people :)
Great vibes, highly recommend it!

Yamasaki promotions classes are pretty big and usually have an open mat. The 60th Anniversary was a huge class.

That is awesome! Imagine multiplying that by 5, 5x the fun!

That sounds like a ton of fun! Cool video. It's been 6 years since that, we can make an updated worlds largest open mat video!

We have an open mat called Big Jitsu here in Houston. Only grapplers 200 lbs and up, scale at the door. We have had over 10000 lbs at a few of them.
Or did you mean actual people?

All I can read with the font on picture is YAMASAKI GOTH ANNIVERSARY and it paints a picture in my mind that doesn't match the actual picture at all :(

That sounds like about 50 people. I am talking about a large number of people :)

The first bjj globetrotters usa camp. No idea how many folks were on the mats, but this wasn't even their biggest camp.

Biggest one I've been to would be one of the Heidelcamp open mats Christian mentioned, so something like 300 people. I get quite a few at my GrappleThons (which is basically a big open mat for 24hrs, with people getting sponsored to roll in order to raise money for charity), but while that might reach triple figures over the course of the 24 hours, it wouldn't be more than about 50 at any one time.
Naturally I only rolled with something like 5 or 6 people out of that 300, 100% of whom I either already knew well or had at least chatted to a lot over the previous week. :P

Wow, that sounds like a great event! I am thinking of doing something like this also. Thanks for sharing your insight!

I'm in there somewhere, in that wonderful pile of chaos. Kind of makes me sad it'll be a LONG time before we can have those massive mat moshpits again.

I'm not so sure about "LONG"... we're doing 200 people at a camp in the US in 4 weeks. And I'm kind of optimistic for Europe. Perhaps even the Estonia Camp in September could end up being pretty big if things start to open up over the summer.
