It's vaccination important ? Should you be vaccinated before you roll?
If no why ?
If yes why yes?

Definitely a personal decision.

Also, I guess I should’ve asked rather than assuming, but this is about covid vaccinations right?

As a physician, my bias is obvious. However it would be unreasonable and unrealistic to expect everyone at my gym to be vaccinated. I think if one decides not to vaccinate, one should consider periodic testing. I had a discussion with Stephan Kesting about this

No from me. Good for anyone who does, just leave me out of it.

I would encourage everyone to get pretty much any vaccination recommended by their family doctor/primary care physician. Vaccines are ridiculously safe and effective.

I agree. I can see where the hesitancy comes from too. I would encourage anyone with concerns to discuss these with their primary care physician. Multiple times if necessary

Just a little reminder that this topic of course should not turn into a political debate :) :) Let's keep it clean and respectful.
I also think it's a personal choice and even more a cultural one. It seems like vaccine trust/hesitancy is very much connected with certain areas/cultures. For instance, where I live in French territory, I only know one single person who wanted it. One. In Denmark, I think it's closer to 9/10 of my friends and family who will take it.
I got my one and only Pfizer shot this week and was very happy about it (only need one because I already was infected 6 months ago). I trust the scientific process and data, but also respect that my friends don't. It will not change anything in my relationship with them.
I would never make vaccine a requirement for training, that is a matter of personal risk for each individual. I imagine that at the BJJ Globetrotters camps, the requirement for testing that we've had so far, will disappear relatively quickly after the point where everyone have easy access to the vaccine if they want it. Then those who want the protection can take it and those who don't can take the risk as they please.

For me, this is just like staying home when you're sick, and washing your go so you don't spread an infection. If someone is able to get vaccinated, independent of Corona, and doesn't have some circumstance that prevents them from getting vaccinated, i.e. immuno compromised or no health insurance, then it's kind of inconsiderate not to.

How so? If you have it then you shouldn't have to worry about those who do not. That is their business and choice. If you are vaccinated you aren't immune? So then what is the point of the vaccine?

Glad I got mine. Had first dose of Oxford/Astrazenica.
Ive learned from personal experience that if I don’t have the flu jab each year then I generally suffer that winter with the seasonal flu: fever, hot sweats , shivers , hallucinations etc. Really don’t fancy a dose of COVID.

You know people pay good money for hallucinations?

Vaccines aren't 100% protection for an individual against being able to get and transmit a disease. Even the Moderna/Pfizer vaccines are only in the high 90%s in this regard. If a large number of people get vaccinated it's less likely you'll get sick because fewer people around you will get sick. It has the advantage of being a significant symptom reducer, so even if you do get sick, you're less likely to be hospitalized.
Having said that, there's a set of population health questions here - mutation of the virus into variants that can break through vaccines, herd immunity to limit spread for those that are unable to get vaccinated, and the potential for eradication of the virus if the vaccines are very effective and enough people get them.
So, to the point of the vaccine, it depends if we're talking in terms of individual protection where the point is to keep individuals from dying or from a population health perspective where the point is to limit spread to the point of containment so that mutations are less likely and eradication may be an eventual outcome.

Vaccines work kinda like good gym hygiene (showering after training/washing gear etc). The more people doing it the better things are controlled and the less chance of transmission happening.
As stated above vaccines aren’t don’t provide instant 100% immunity to whomever gets one. If a high enough percentage of the population is vaccinated the chances of two “unprotected” people coming in contact is greatly reduced and so community transmission is low.
While it is not a scientific analysis if you anecdotally look at vaccination rates and case rates there’s a definite correlation.
Heavily vaccinated areas like Israel and the uk are doing pretty good. Moderate areas like the US are doing ok and countries that vaccinated slower like Canada are seeing way higher COVID rates despite more significant lockdowns/restrictions than the US.
So based on early data if you want your restrictions lifted you should be running toward the nearest vaccine site.

I am fully immunized but obviously, I support people's right to choose.
What might be right for me might not be right for some.
I took a 7-month break from training and only worked out at home drilling and rolling with my son during the height of the pandemic. For me, that's what made sense with a wife who had just beaten cancer a month before this thing started. Now, honestly, I am still hesitant to go with folks I don't know but feel more comfortable in training in general.
I look forward to the time when it's not a thought I have to have, and can just shake a stranger's hand or get a hug.

Agreed 100%. I would say more but the only politics allowed to be pitched on this site have to do with the IBJJF.

Is there any other way to get out of this covid situation? I think The answer is no. So i say yes it is important that people take vaccines.

Ok I think we heard the arguments for and against the vaccine, so let's make sure that any future posts in the topic will stay BJJ related as per the rules :) Thanks!

Here in Saint Barth they’re literally begging people to show up and get vaccinated these days so they don’t have to throw out the many doses they have left over :-/ I would personally wish more BJJ people here would get it; health reasons of course but also because we will have to close the gym for two weeks if someone gets infected and the vaccine at least would significantly lower the risk of that.
