Just some words of encouragement for those who have been off the mats for a while.
I waited until I was fully vaccinated to come back to the mats. All in all, I was off the mats for about a year and a half; my longest time off the mats since I started training. Since then I have moved, started a new job, and barely exersized. I knew I was out of shape. I was sure as a purple belt coming to a new school I would be a target. Safe to say I was nervous. I went to train anyway. I didn't realize the camaraderie that I missed, and shared experience of sparring, and learning new techniques. I did have to sit a round out, and felt like I was hit by a truck the following dad, but in a good way! All in all, I enjoyed myself. I held my own, and it all came back like riding a bike.

Good to hear. I'm hoping to get back in June, it's been so long I'm starting to question whether it's worth it.

I am nearly ready to start actually rolling again. Been teaching non-stop but not actually sparring or working in any of the classes yet.

Nice! Yeah, I haven't been able to roll with anybody since March 2020. However, I can see that in perspective, as it's only a year and a half. By contrast, my friend Jim had a break from the 1990s through to about 2010 or something IIRC (it was about 18 years). He had got his blue belt from Craig Kukuk (so proper old school, in US terms) in the 90s, had that loooong break, then came back. He is now a black belt who runs a school in New Jersey. :D

That's awesome! I can't imagine being off for that long. Good for him.

I just got back from rolling in a fellow bjj dad's attic. First time in a year, not counting the occasional rolls with my girl. The guy's a blue belt, same size, same weight. Proper gent.
Some observations.
1. I'm fat
2. I'm slow
3. Cardio is total shit
However,
4. I could still bread & butter wrestlesweep, tractor pass & put the big presh. Continuously, for about an hour long session.
Conclusion: all that fancypants flying boloversion acrobatic stuff is great, but the presh is greater.

Yep. Requires way less moving too, so presh gets my vote over flying beaver backflip bus-stopoplata or whatever. Non mean version, naturally. :P
Also, well done to your fellow Dutchies on a top notch Eurovision from Rotterdam so far. :D

I had to take three years off from 50 to 53 and coming back was the best thing I ever did but was depressing as hell. It took all I had not to give up. My body had been through hell with cancer and I spent the first few weeks struggling to breath instead of actually grappling.. By the 4th month I was competing again and never looked back. Those first few weeks were such a struggle as it was like my body was my enemy my brain was saying what to do but my body said F you

I've started rolling with a buddy at my military unit and it has been tough. I can only say that it feels good to be sore from grappling rather than sore from sitting at my desk, at my house, all day.

First roll since March 2020 last night. Not too bad but I went with an old buddy who was in worse shape than me. Best decision ever! We didn't push too hard, a little sore today. My "A" game is all that is left ... weird how everything else I was working on prior to covid is gone from muscle memory.
Anyway, soooo good to be back on the mat.

Just came back this last week (although I had a garage gym setup with a blue belt in my bubble). I've definitely lost a step and my feet look like hell from matburn, but man it feels good to be back. Cardio definitely isn't there and my grips were burnt almost immediately, but all in all the feeling of being on the mats and sharing a beer with the team after was something I didn't know how much I missed.
I've still got some of my flippy shit dialed in though!

man im back from zero ambition couch mode
to teaching and rolling 4-6 fucking hours a day 5 days a week as it is my job...
from 0 to 100% instantly
i was really worried if id be able to even handle it
but somehow im better than ever
only one knee is kinda bad and i grew a bit fatter lol
i kept my mind occupied with jiu jitsu all the time tho,
watched a million instructionals during corona
maybe that made me evolve technically
anyway shits going great,
if i make it through the frist month without getting killed by hordes of whitebelts im here to stay.
PS: about the flying beaver backflip bustoplatas,
you just gotta move effortlessly ! works same as presh :)

Ha ha ha - if anybody can make the random bus stop backflip Borussia Dortmund beaverplata work, it is DEFINITELY you. Kinda the exception that proves the rule, I guess. :P
