Activity Tracker whilst training BJJ

Hey all,
I’m really keen to purchase an activity tracker to help me with my understanding of recovery / sleep needs / energy expenditure etc etc.
My question is, what are people using that are safe for training? I was thinking about using a Whoop wrist strap and bandaging it up every session? The upper arm band is quite expensive on top of the monthly fee for the app.
Do I just need to bite the bullet and spend the cash?
Are there better alternatives on the market?

I used a whoop on my arm for a year. I didn't have the dedicated cover and it occasionally slipped, but mostly stayed in place. One of my students has the dedicated sleeve with a pocket for it and it seems to work really well for him. I tried the simple elastic sleeve and it worked fine until I misplaced it. In the end I used it exclusively on the bicep at all times on and off the mat.
I'd be surprised if any variation of wrist use would work well.

Don't expect the thing to stay on while engaging in occasional porrada. Only during drilling and flow rolling, but who does that? Because it's immensely boring.

Occasional porrada?! Occasional?!

I did tend to wear rash guards while wearing it, even under the gi. Appropriate strap tightness and locating it on the outside of the bicep helped the most. I will admit to needing to adjust the location at least once in each open mat, but it was rarely a significant issue for me.

I use an Apple Watch with an arm band. I tuck it almost under my armpit. Stays on most of the time.

Maybe there's not that much point to tracking everything :)

Very nice link!
I admit to becoming very obsessed with tracking to the point it becomes negatives at times.

I believe I'm the only person above 35 in my gym who doesn't use a tracker whilst training. Most wear a chest band of some sort under their rashie, or an arm band, and apparently don't have much issues (especially in the gi classes). Everybody keeps talking to me about their heart rate numbers and some shit, of which I have no clue about since I've never tracked mine or anybody else's.
I have this genius system where I conclude that I need to rest if I feel tired, need to eat if I feel hungry etc. but that doesn't appear to be too popular these days. :)

I have broken 3 medically issues monitors that were "safe" for training, not one stayed on the whole time. I have tried to use a wearable and compare it to the readings on the medical devices and they were close but at times differed enough that I was not confident in the wearable device. I agree with Tatu and the statement, listen to your body. I wouldn't invest a ton into something that is as you say an "obsession."

I wore a tracker for about 4 years almost all the time except while training jiujitsu. I've since not worn one for the last 1.5 years and I'd say I'm in better shape now then the time I wore one.
