Notorious black belt fraud David Lang exploited peoples trust to get a legit professor to give him 2 stripes on "his" black belt.
This promotion was later rescinded after the community explained that he wasn't even a blue belt.

Initially, what brought the communities attention to this fraud was a belt certificate "from" Wallid Ismail & Gracie Combatives.

My concern is if people are verifying people they don't know based on pictures with legit instructors/certifications will this enable frauds? Or will the community spot the frauds and contest their promotions?

It will be interesting to see for sure. Regardless, it is very difficult to hide here. If you have a profile and someone know you're a fraud, there's a very good chance that it will be spotted and once the word is out, I imagine that dispute votes starts rolling really fast.

It would probably only be a matter of making one forum post exposing the profile and I'm sure a lot of people would help downvote it right away.

I don't think all that many people are verifying purely based on a picture, at least I hope not. I certainly would never do that. Somebody like Dave Lang would probably be exposed quite fast, especially as there is also the option to dispute (where you vote is a minus rather than plus). Fortunately, I think BJJ is still small enough in terms of its community that fakes are known and talked about.

So you'd have to be a charismatic fake, with lots of people who are not only legit but willing to back you up online, potentially against a bunch of other people disputing your belt.

Christian, can people remove their profiles?
Of course, there's a disable profile option that will completely hide the profile and all it's activity. For a full database cleaning, for now just email me (as mentioned in privacy policy)

I kind of imagine that fraudulent profiles will not so much be exposed on this site, since they will just disappear the moment they are revealed/downvoted. Given that we grow the user base big enough, it will probably more be a case of if people don't have a profile here (=put it up for public judgment), then there might reason for suspicion as to why that is.

There’s one fraud in my area who would get scorched on here if he ever made a profile, but I don’t suspect that he ever will.

Hi everyone!

First of all, thx u all that made this possible! This is a fantastic idea! Having a ibjjf alternative, community driven verification website, plus FREE is awesome! Fees are just too high!

I'm not sure if this is going to make it easy for the fraud, I'm really hoping it doesn't, but for now I'm strongly recommending this system to all my chilean friends. Since we have no such thing at the moment it feels like a strong tool being verified by the community. We don't have that much black belts at the moment in our country (I'd less than 100), so it's gonna be hard to get verified, but I really hope after a few months more chilean become users.

If there is any help your might need, feel free to ask for it!

Good rolls ya'all!

It's not as hard as you would think. I haven't asked one person to verify me, but there are enough people scanning profiles and giving out votes based solely on good documentation that I still got verified in relatively short order. If you attach strong evidence to you profile and stay active on the forums, you'll probably get enough lookers and votes to get verified in a couple of weeks.

And this is after two weeks. Imagine one year from now.

At this point, it's like we've just started poring concrete to build the foundation for a house for someone, but they already complain that the wifi and rooftop jacuzzi is not installed and ready to use yet.

This experiment is showing more about human nature than anything else.
