Must have been another 2+ degree black belt involved in the promotion who ok’ed it? That’s probably a good idea to note on the profile to avoid downvotes.

That is our situation at our gym. Our instructor promoted his long-time student with the OK of a 4th degree black belt.

In that case, it would have been the long-time student who was promoted by the 4th degree black belt at the recommendation of your instructor. As I see it.

IBJJF makes lineages invisible to the public, but on Beltchecker, I really would wish that everyone wrote the actual promoting instructor as the promoting instructor and not someone who recently got BB him or herself.

Why be in a hurry? It's only a belt, but rushing things will potentially complicate things up for future "generations" in the lineage too. Better an uncontestedly legit BB at a later date than a disputed BB earlier, I'd say.

It would be nice to be able to add co-promoters, my coach (Sam Joseph) was promoted by the Yamasaki brothers, and has co-promoted a student with Paul Creighton so this doesn't seem like that uncommon a phenomenon.

Just put it in the comments for the promotion record

If promoting to Black you have to have a 2nd degree Black belt, it shouldn't be a co-promotion. The 2nd degree or higher is the person promoting. That would be the technical thing to do.

I used to get smashed by Sam Joseph all the time at Shawn Williams' place in Hollywood. He is a good dude! Does he still put lotion on his ears to prevent cauliflower ear?

I don't think any of the promoting black belts in the examples I gave were below 2 stripes, it was more of a "we've both contributed to this person's training and think he's deserving of the rank" kind of situation. I guess you'd just pick the more "senior" coach to list as promoting instructor, but I'm glad it's not a situation I'm in.

I've definitely seen Sam put lotion on his ears to prevent cauliflower, I'm not sure if he still does though, he got it a few years back.

I've seen a couple profiles around here of non-black belts having promoted people to the rank below their own or their own rank. Digging a bit I ended up finding that in most cases the promoted people had previously been promoted by the promoters BB instructor, so maybe that BB was involved and the person simply filled the profile incorrectly... either way I simply don't vote in those cases.

I believe we just make them and the community a disservice by not acting to uphold high standards on belt promotion accuracy on Beltchecker. Don't we want them to correct errors? If they do, all downvotes will dissapear anyways and we can right away help them in gaining back the upvotes.
